I suppose it comes down to what you want from evil characters.
If you believe in the theory that no one is born evil, they just become it, then a story that explains why a character became evil makes sense. If you can buy that evil characters just are evil with no reason to it, then yeah, any explanation is going to wind you up.
I shall see it, mainly for Angelina Jolie's awesome cheekbones.

I shall see it, mainly for Angelina Jolie's awesome cheekbones. That's exactly the only thing I see cool about the movie. I shall stick with Legend.

I have stated before that I have no interest. I am tired of all these movies that say the bad guys weren't really bad guys at all! Which is exactly what this looks like... and it makes no sense for someone like Malefecint who was pretty much evil incarnate and made references to worshiping the devil... hell her familiar was called DIABLO... they weren't exactly going for subtlety... also... I haven't watched it yet but for those of you who can stomach him FIlm Brain did a projector review of this movie here. Spoilers obviously thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/teamt/fbv/projector/43497-maleficentAaaaaaand that cemented it. I damn well knew what they were going for...that Malefecint wasn't REALLY evil...and that's exactly what it is. Bullcrap! I'm so sick and tired of villainesses getting taken away from us and turned into wonderful people, it's such shit. Why can't we do that with men, huh? That prince in Frozen was a great guy and was just trying to save the kingdom from two very stupid and insane princesses. The Mountain from Game of Thrones is an awesome loving dude...he only raped and killed that woman and her children because she killed his pet fly when he was but a lad. Oh, Thulsa Doom from Conan the Barbarian was amazingly nice, he was leading a happy religious group, until Conan's evil asshole dad stole his girlfriend (Conan's mom) away! How about Carnage from Marvel Comics? Oh gee, that guy is truly the protector of the f***ing Ozone layer, and only killed hundreds or thousands of people to stop global warming! Good men and true, one and all! Everybody is just misunderstood, everybody is actually a great hero! f*** that shit, give me my villains, let them be evil, and leave them the f*** alone. This rant is so confusing. You seem to be ranting about females villains getting too much background for their evil and not men, but then talk about men who get too much backstory for their evil.

I believe there is room for both. But a magical creature like Maleficint who has pretty much a physical manifestation of evil is not one that needs a back-story to make her sympathetic or really the hero of the story...

I expect "Scar" to be released soon, showing his rise from a young idealistic cub, bullied by his smug older brother, ignored by his distant parents, and mocked and ridiculed by all the animals in the pridelands, to an angry, but in a way justified, evil usuper
It ends with Simba's birth.

Don't forget showing Mufasa and his parents segregate the hyenas while Scar is their only friend and was not only using them as a means to an end....

Poor misunderstood Herod, who pleaded with everyone to vaccinate their children, and was unable to stop a massive plague that wiped out the Hebrew firstborn.

I am just over the whole villain isn't really evil, they're just misunderstood trope. It's getting really played out. Sometimes it's okay to have a character that's just evil. It works.

I believe the poster was saying that this trend was female villains getting the new and improved anti-hero backstory, and that it doesn't happen for male villains. There was a significant amount of sarcasm.

I am going to see it cause my friend, who is a big Disney fan, and her fiancee really want to see it. I wasn't as interested for the reasons explained before, which I knew what they were going for all along. At the very least, the characters look nice though. Still, it's a nice night out with friends, which is what I'm looking forward to either way.
It can't be worse than what Rob Zombie did to Michael Myers, giving him the generic "redneck abusive family, bullied teen" story.
However, I wonder...Once Upon A Time has TONS of shades of grey villains (some turn out to not be so bad after all), and yet that is usually quite good. What's the difference? (Is it because we forget that and instead complain about them insisting that all the characters be related in Empire Strikes Back swerve styles? ;-))

Mufasa reprised by James Earl Jones and Scar is now Hayden Christensen. Scar is evil because "I hate sand. It gets in my paw pads and irritates them."

Seth, make a movie spinoff of this cutaway. You'll get my money RIGHT NOW:
/Or rerelease Downfall with a combination of subtitles from all the parodies. //Hitler will become the newest cinematic hero.

I'll probably watch it at some point because seeing Angelina Jolie dressed as a sexy evil queen sounds like a good use of two hours of my life.

For those upset that it de-evils Maleficent, know this: Paul Dini, the guy responsible for "de-eviling" Mr. Freeze in the '90s Batman animated series (critically acclaimed for it too), wrote MALEFICENT.
Quality-wise, might not suck at all; evil-wise, like Freeze, Maleficent might not be so nice at all either.

Or is it like an uncredited script doctor type thing? I mean Godzilla supposedly passed through Darabont's hands, and that's a massive POS no matter how good Dream Warriors was. (Not to say I can assess Maleficent one way or another because wow that movie looks generic I'm not seeing it).
