I wonder if it's just the latest in a new fad of revisionism of female villains. The Wicked Witch was made sympathetic in "Wicked". The Evil Queen was made evil because men exploited her in "Snow White and...Thor" and now Maleficient gets a reimagination along the same lines. Yes but at least "Wicked" was good. Of course! Because Maleficent wrote it!

I thought it was a fun movie, but I can imagine being kind of upset if I cared about Sleeping Beauty at all. I've never even seen it. The art is stunning in the 1959 movie. I recommend watching some clips of it on YouTube for that alone, even if you aren't interested in the plot.

Saw it at the drive in on Saturday. You know, this whole thing could have been avoided if Steffen would have said: {Spoiler}Hey, Mal. I have a way to bring peace to our kingdoms. The king will name me his successor if I can prove I killed you. Can I borrow your wings? Mal: Sure, if you cut them off, they'll come to life and fly back to me if I'm within a half a mile of them. Steff: Cool. Drink this. I'll give them back as soon as I've got a crown on my head.[/spoler]
Funny thing is, the original Grimm tale has the wise woman that is made into Maleficent for Disney putting the curse on Aurora because she got snubbed at her birth banquet.

Not possible as Maleficent didn't get around to inventing compromise yet.

Maleficent hung Chris Benoit after discovering what he did. Sure she didn't save lives, but it's not like any other movie had a hero who barely saved anyone and then snapped the villain's neck...wait, is someone talking to me? Mr...Snyder?

It just occurred to me that the ending of Maleficent and the ending of Frozen are the same thing: {Spoiler}it's not the boy's love who saves her, it's the girl's.

Really dislike this trend. {Spoiler}{Spoiler}Because Sleeping Beauty's dad is a very mean and awful man. ![O_o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/browraise.png) At least with FROZEN it's very much a story about 2 sisters' relationship, their connection is well developed and the "prince" is built up in the story as a very real love interest. So when that ending happens......you're actually fine with it. Sisterly love proven after you spent the movie wondering if it was still there. Classic. Great. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) With MALEFICENT, as far as I know, Philip the love interest doesn't get developed well (the 1st plot I read mentioned him once) and.........Maleficent is friends with Aurora seriously how the hell does anyone at Disney even greenlight that?!! What's next - Jafar is Jasmine's misunderstood father?!

Cut her some slack, as Maleficent is trying to invent a way to stop Let it Go from being played.

Oh joy, watch it be she kidnaps Dalmatians because one was rabid and bit her as a kid, and she's not really killing them but faking it and the puppies are given to loving families.

And in a step in making a DVCU (Disney Villain Cinematic Universe), Maleficent is to thank because she invented puppies to make everyone happy.

I saw it. It was terrible. To add to the already said things in this thread. {Spoiler}Maleficent turns evil because of a very subtle rape metaphor.
By subtle, I mean she is roofied by a childhood friend and then given a wound from which she can never heal.
Also, the king was not unjustifiably evil. Honestly, everyone would act the same if a crazed fairy cursed your daughter to eternal slumber. But he spends 16 years developing a plan to kill Maleficent when she returns to kill him. A Cunning plan, a masterful plan, a plan requiring all the ironsmiths in the land working through the night...
Dropping a small net on her!
