It's not like he left without telling anyone. He told them he was done, he worked all the dates in his contract and didn't want to extend it to do more dates, and it was over. They don't have much of a case. Not sure how royalties, even though 2K15 isn't even out yet, work in this situation though. I seriously doubt that the WWE would have CM Punk sign a contract that ended right before WrestleMania. No, his contract ended in July. But, every contract also has a set number of dates you're required to work per year. They'd begun having Punk wrestle on both RAW and SmackDown rather than just RAW, and they ate up the rest of his dates by the end of January. He was obviously keeping track.

If AJ gets punished, it accomplishes nothing more than people being made more aware of how petty WWE is.

I'd laugh if this went to trial and Punk's lawyer was Paul Heyman.

Worked all the dates in his contract? His contract went until July of this year, so he walked out with 6 months left. He technically isn't owed anything after that date if the wording of the contract says he doesn't own what he did while under contract. WWE's just nice enough to give people royalties, even when they probably don't have to. His contract wasn't up in January. It was up in July. He had tons of more dates to work. His contract was up in July, but when I watched Bret Hart's DVD he mentions how you have a certain amount of contractually obligated dates in that contract over a certain amount of time. Like they did with Bret, they used up all of Punk's dates before his contract was up, so while he was obligated to stay under contract and not work for anyone, he wasn't obligated to show up if he didn't want to either. Most people generally stick it out through the end of their contract I guess, but Punk probably didn't feel like waiting until July to leave.

I'm not sure that's how it works. There are a set number of dates on a WWE contract. That's been confirmed by plenty of wrestlers who have talked about the industry. Let's say Punk signs a 3 year deal for X amount of dates. Three years may end in July, but he's already worked the number of dates in his contract by February. Should he not then contractually be allowed to sit at home the remainder of his contract? He fulfilled all the dates required in the contract both parties signed. Put it into terms at a "normal" job. You sign a contract when you accept a job offer, and inside it details everything required of you in your job. You fulfill every single one of those requirements, but then your employer starts trying to add stuff in despite not being part of the agreement. Maybe they want you to start working 12 hour days (despite your contract saying 10), or travel outside of the area you agreed to travel to in your contract. You would have every legal right to refuse, and Punk in this instance, having worked all of his required dates, should have more than a leg to stand on. He didn't quit and then immediately start looking for other places to wrestle. He went home to sit out the remainder of his WWE contract, because he'd fulfilled his booking obligations.

Yeah... can we not pass judgement on legality already when all we know about the situation is 2 sentences of reporting? Two sentences is one more than I need. WWE PAYS NO ONE VINCE SWIMS IN THE TEARS OF HOMELESS CHILDREN CONFIRMED!

I'm not sure that's how it works. If I remember right Nash, Hall and a few others have confirmed that they sign people to a deal for say 36 month or 36 dates. Once you work the set number of dates they no longer have to book you and you no longer have to appear, an easy out for them basically if someone comes in and bombs. Punk has been reported to have fulfilled the dates long ago and therefore is not in breach but that is just wrestling news. As for 2K15, he is the main character of the main storyline and of two other modes and WWE does not have the rights to his name anymore since his deal is up (in Punk's view), so they'd be using his trademarks to sell video games without payment which is obviously a huge deal.

I feel your pain.
I guess Punk's royalty woes mirror Owen's issue when his widow Martha, sued the WWF/E years back. Anyone weighing in?

So wait. They "believe" the reason the letter was sent is because of royalties owed Punk for a game that hasn't come out yet?
IDK could it just be possible that maybe this was an agreement for a royalty payment structure due for future use of his likeness sent in. Seeing as he is no longer under contract with them like he was when the agreement was put in place originally. How can he be owed royalty money for a a use of his likeness that hasn't happened yet.
Makes more damn sense than this clickbait article.

Does Punk own the rights to his name? He does. He "leased" it to WWE during the tenure of his contract, same as guys like Jericho and RVD. As soon as he's out, the name goes with him. Punk's not a dumb guy. He protected his assets very well.

Might be coincidence, but WWE just super marked down ALL of Punk's merch. Like, dramatically down. Haven't seen anything like it since Bischoff made a crack about continued royalties from the WWE selling his book in 2010 when he was in TNA that lead to the WWE marking it down to $3.00 or so and clearing it out. If you've been waiting to scoop the Punk blu-ray, it's now only $7.99, which is two dollars less than the cost of the network : shop.wwe.com/CM-Punk/cmpunk,default,sc.html

Whether he's right or wrong, i'm always going to hope anybody going after WWE legally f***s them up the ass. I find it absolutely impossible to side with them over anything at all. Is this why they invited Michael Sam to RAW ?
