I wasn't fond of the CGI people in it. {Spoiler}Tarkin stood out like a sore thumb But overall, I think I like it more than just about all of them, save Empire (though my opinion often changes the further away I get from). I think part of it is that this is the type of story I think they needed to tell in this franchise. {Spoiler}Every other movie has been part of a sprawling, melodromatic space opera with plenty of one note mary-sue characters, and while I like the original series, this did more to establish the threat of the enemy than all the other movies combined. This was a smaller movie, a movie about an event and the struggle of the Rebellion, rather than a story about demigods. It was more of a war movie than the other Star Wars movies were, and because it was a smaller story, the characters didn't need a lot of development in the end, because it was a story about being willing to sacrifice for the greater good. There was nothing to prop up in any of these characters, they were fighting a war and weren't supposed to be goody two-shoes perfect all the time, and they weren't. You didn't need to hear monologues about how they weren't perfect because they sold that in the acting (though Forest Whitaker did not do well here.
I felt more humanity out of this movie than I ever did out of the prequels or The Force Awakens.

What's weird about Forest Whitaker as Saw Gerrera is that in that clip from Rebels, he sounds just like he would in any of his other roles. But, in Rogue One, he went semi-"Last King of Scotland."
I think that's because of all the shit Saw went through during his time in the rebellion but, it was weird and probably sounded a lot better in concept than in practice.

But maybe that was the point because of said shit he'd been through.

I liked it... but I didn't think it was great. full reasoning in the spoilers {Spoiler}{Spoiler} The last battle and especially Vader being a bad ass was awesome. I liked most of the characters. Peter Cushing looked good for a guy that's been dead for 20 years but seriously, I do like them showing more of Grand Moff Tarkin being an evil Prick. But, parts in the beginning were a bit slow Rook was pretty much an extraneous character, pretty much everything he did post Jeddah could easily have been given to someone else with little effort. Leia being on board the capital ship at the end just seemed out of character. She's an ambassador and has been part of the political espionage game literally her entire life she'd know something about plausible deniability and not be on a ship that was blatantly seen at a massive battle. Yeah, Vader knows she's full of shit in A New Hope but the idea of the senate not standing for it doesn't make any damned sense when they can just go. Here is her ship leaving a massive terrorist attack on an important Imperial planet. That is why we are detaining her. I didn't entirely like Pun Vader when I saw it then I remembered he did quip occasionally in the original movies... "Apology Accepted, Captain Needa." Finally... well... it had the problem of being a prequel. We know what happens to these characters. we know that they get the death star plans. we know the Death Star is fully operational and won't be destroyed in this movie... and again we kinda knew these characters were dying because they weren't in A New Hope. Like I said I enjoyed the movie and don't feel like I wasted my time. And seeing another side of the Star Wars universe other than the Jedi Mysticism (though yeah some of that was there too) was neat... but it still had a bunch of problems I'd put it over all of the other prequels but... that's probably it.

We got a Half in The Bag review of it, now here's Plinkett himself talking about it. I agree a lot with this review. Mind you, he was hard on TFA and yet pointed out Rogue Ones far more blatant flaws. I feel Rogue One probably won't age well. Especially once Episode VIII and the Han Solo flick come out. It's weird too, I went to the movies last night, and someone was buying a ticket beside me "Star Wars at 10:30 please" and I literally said out loud befuddled "They re-released The Force Awakens???" Before realizing Rogue One was technically a Star Wars film.

I saw it today it was good, but not great. {Spoiler}-The music is really a let down. I know the wanted to move away from the Star Wars theme, but that was a mistake as the theme they used at the start instead was instantly forgettable. The still used the Imperial March all the time and the SW theme at the end so why bother withholding it?
-I didn't really care for any of the main characters sadly. The blind fighter was cool, but I saw that character done way better in the sadly cancelled Marco Polo. Nobody grabbed me like Finn and Rey and the main character just had a weird facial expression all movie.
-The sniper scene was really cool. I would love an espionage Star Wars movie.
-Loved "I have a bad feeling about this being interrupted
-The end made no sense with R2 and 3PO being nowhere near Leia.
-You know I wanted an actual stand-alone film rather than a prequel to a New Hope. I want to see a fun bunch of misfits on a ship go on an adventure. I want Mass Effect the movie basically or Firefly I suppose. Guess I will get that in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 but I want a proper stand-alone Star Wars movie. So nowhere near the pure slice of joy that was the excellent Force Awakens with it's first-pumping nostalgia kicks and it's hilarious humour. Force Awakens also had me emotionally invested during the lightsaber fight at the end and I walked out the cinema using my drink bottle as a lightsaber and humming the theme. Here I was like "That was quite good." It was driving me crazy all film long trying to remember where I'd seen Cassian from and just found out he was in The Terminal which I saw on Christmas Day. Did anybody else get major Red Viper vibes from him? My ranking 1) Empire Strikes Back 2) Star Wars 3) Return of the Jedi 4) The Force Awakens 5) Rogue One The other three.

I actually enjoyed it quite a bit, but I really didn't have much expectations or extensive knowledge of the film. I knew it was about the rebellion and was taking place between III and IV, but had no idea it would lead right into "A New Hope". Personally, I thought it was pretty good. Was it the best of the series? No, but I honestly had no expectations for it, and it was pretty entertaining. {Spoiler}Obviously quite a bit of "member berries" in the movie with the Tarkin and Leia CGI, along with the ships, backgrounds and AT-ATs. But then I kind of enjoy that stuff. Also, I did like the sand sculpture of a fallen Obi-Wan as the Empire revising history. But I have no idea why Vader would want to stay on Mustafar!?
I did enjoy seeing a movie that didn't heavily involve the jedi storyline, even though there was a "possible" jedi. At least Chirrut Imwe is somewhat believable, since it was only 20 years since the Jedi "extinction". I imagine there was literature and people who knew of their teachings. It's not like he beat a fairly well trained Jedi with absolutely no training like the last movie.
I agree, the main characters(Cassian Andor and Jyn Erso) didn't grab me as much as "A Force Awakens", but I felt the storyline was better. I believe the reason "A Force Awakens" worked so well was because of the characters, whereas this movie was more about the story than the characters, if that makes sense to anyone.
While the CGI of Tarkin and Leia looked odd, at least Tarkin was pretty necessary considering he was the General of the Death Star. I felt Leia easily could have been left out. I guess it just felt more odd since Carrie Fisher just passed away and Cushing has been dead for decades.

Finally got to see Rogue One.
Which is weird, since I like the actors and the story of this movie, but the characters were very flat, so I didn't care about them. Whereas in The Force Awakens, I liked the actors and the characters of that movie, but hated the story. The pieces are there for Disney to make a good *something*, but nothing has come together yet as a satisfying time at the movies. For me, Disney is now 0 for 2. And fortunately, like with The Force Awakens, I had enough movie points saved up through my local theatre chain to see Rogue One for free, which took the sting off just how ho-hum Rogue One was. Had I dropped $15 on this, I'd be very irritated.

Plinkett's whole premise is wrong though. He's right in the sense that in a vacuum the story of Rogue One wouldn't make much sense; but given that it was NEVER made to be that, and was always an addition to a New Hope, it's futile and needlessly contrarian to judge it on that merit.
I'll give him the character thing, but the movie was never meant to be divorced from context and the RLM guys know that.

Off topic, but what did everyone think of the trailers with the movie?
Cars 3 still excites me. Can't wait to see it.
Dunkirk looked kinda dark, but it's a WWII movie, and it was a pretty big event for the allies.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 looked hilarious. I'm gonna have to watch the first one to catch up on it.
The baby movie looked incredibly stupid. Granted, it was a kids movie, but even as a kid I wouldn't want to see it.
Power Rangers......*sigh*........why do you insist on bastardizing my childhood, Hollywood?

My father has been raving about the Dunkirk trailer... but he is a massive history buff so that is right up his alley. Guardians looks fantastic as does Spider-man Homecoming. The other ones I got were... Transformers and ... Fate of the Furious... and really don't have any interest in either.

They've said Fast and The Furious has an end game...but that could easily just be to close the current cast's story. No way will it stay dormant forever. It's James Bond with cars, and the cars are the stars

It's James Bond with cars, and the cars are the stars I would argue the cars haven't been the stars since the 3rd one. Once they started shifting from racing movies to straight up action movies, they've been driven (no pun intended) by star power
