Hi guys,
Myself and a few other people had this discussion in the PPV thread regarding the London crowd. Basically, we (and by we, I mean folks who agreed with me in the thread so don't get all mad if that's not you) felt that the London crowd was distracting and generally took away from the show. It...didn't go great, to say the least. I found myself being misquoted by posters and mods alike and essentially, felt pretty under attack for saying I didn't enjoy something. I know some folks get weirdly defensive about "their" NXT (and if you feel like you aren't one of those people, I'm probably not talking about you) but I feel like there has been some MAJOR breakdown in communication across the board regarding the subject of crowds being "annoying." If I had a nickel for every time I heard something resembling "So, do you just want crowds to be DEAD!?!?!?" or "So, do just hate FUN!?!?!?", I'd probably be able to get a Little Cesears' Pizza by now.
Part of that is because folks just don't like to read but I feel like there might be something more to it. I'll be honest, I felt kinda pissed off after the thread because of what happened. I'd already been in a pretty bad mood due to IRL stuff. I usually come on here to relax but yesterday, I ended up logging off more upset than I did when I came on. Oh, I was ready to pitch a fit in the thread and essentially get myself banned. I'm talking straight up Kamikaze. I know some of you reading this think that's a joke but please know it's not. Really, I've had my issues with this board for a long while. That's neither here nor there but the reality of the situation was that this crowd thing was about to be my breaking point and I ain't talking about that show on the Network. Although, if HHH signed me to a deal because of the promo I cut, that'd be pretty cool. In fact, you can still do that if you want, Hunter. Call me at 281-330-8004 if interested.
What was I saying...oh yeah, this crowd thing. Instead of doing the (rather foolish) thing and letting my emotions get the best of me, I calmed down and decided to make this thread. Now, I feel like a big part of the communication breakdown was the language I used while talking about it. If you've seen me post on here, you kinda have an idea of what my posting style is like. It's sarcastic, very blunt, and, at times, dickish. Now, when I made the post that caused my notifications to light up like a Christmas tree:
AND I QUOTE/Michael Cole
I was already frustrated with the discussion and even used the term "goofballs." In hindsight, that really wasn't the appropriate word to use for this discussion. It took a discussion that was turning hostile and turned up the heat even more by using an insult. Words have power and I didn't think carefully about my language. For that, I apologize.
Now, don't think this is gonna be one big "Magic admits he's wrong AGAIN" thread because it's not and I want to make it clear that I'm not trying to portray it as such. I know this is long and it's only gonna get longer so please bear with me since I'm doing this off the head right now. I feel like not using the proper language extends to both sides of the argument. For example, I'm just gonna throw in a direct quote from one of the mods of this site, taken directly from the NXT thread:
Was this part really necessary? A simple "I disagree because" would have sufficed there. From someone that's supposed to be a moderator on the site, that's pretty derogatory to the other side of the argument. I get what EoE's saying (and don't get it twisted, he's an awesome guy) but remember a few paragraphs up when I said words have power? Yeah...
That right there is the type of stuff that made it feel like I was under attack. Not only do I have posters coming at me, you have mods openly supporting their side and condemning the others as their viewpoint being "BS." That's nothing resembling creating an environment for open discussion because all that does is encourage others to be even more dismissive of the other side.
With all of that being said...
Let's talk about the London crowd with each other. Not AT each other where people just want to say their viewpoint a thousand times over and argue with folks that disagree. Let's have a discussion WITH each other and be mindful of other cultures since that will play a factor here. Hell, we might even learn something today!
For my part, I will not be sarcastic. I will not use insults such as "goofballs" or "cornballs" or any of my usual go-to sayings. I'm even gonna try really hard not to curse in this post. Obviously, I can't force nobody to do the same but I encourage others to do the same. Speak your mind, keep it 100, just try not to mock or insult anybody.
OK? Since I'm the OP, I'll start the discussion.
...I didn't enjoy hearing the crowd in London. From what I was told, this type of atmosphere is common at football matches over in the UK. In a sense, I can appreciate that they took what is a major part of their culture and brought it to a WWE PPV-type event. It was different, for sure.
It's not for me though. I'm not used to hearing this kind of stuff at American sporting events. Even at stuff like boxing and MMA, you hear "Let's Go ____" type chants but I can't recall ever seeing a fight where two guys are just beating the crap out of each other and the crowd is singing a song. It's in support of one of the fighters, sure, but it's still a song in the midst of this bloody, intense fight. That's what threw me off on this. I'm watching heels try to get heat, be dastardly, stalk the ring and their opponent, and all the while, the crowd's singing and chanting. For me, it took pro-wrestling, which is already kind of a joke frankly, and made it an even bigger joke. "Don't worry, nobody's actually getting hurt. These cats are just having some fun out there!!!" Again, I understand that was NOT the UK's crowd intention. They were hype to get a live wrestling PPV and they were showing it
It just made the action...not intense and made it difficult for me to really get sucked into stories. Pro-wrestling is fun to me by itself, I don't need extra sound bytes to go along with it. Now, at the end of the day, I didn't pay for a ticket like the folks in that building. Because of that, they get preference in this particular situation and it's kinda just tough titties for me. Still, this is a discussion board that I use to speak my brain about wrestling (since I can't really do it anywhere in my RL, lol) and I'll give my opinion on this like I do virtually anything else.
I did not enjoy the crowd. This was not what I want from my wrestling shows and if they never had another crowd like this, I won't be shedding tears. I will not apologize for that and if that makes you upset, that's unfortunate.
Obviously, I'm not the "be-all, end-all" when it comes to opinions. What did ya'll cats think? Did you feel similar to me? Did you love the crowd? If you're an American and loved the show, what about it exactly did you love? Are you at all interested in the UK getting another show? If you were at the show live, how would you rank it when it comes to other live wrestling experiences? If you busted your live wrestling cherry with the show, was it everything you thought it would be?
GO FOR IT IN THE COMMENTS.
Never thought I'd seriously end a thread with that, lol

Real shit, let em' know. I'm trying to watch a pro rasslin' story unfold and I'm hearing these goofballs sing songs. That's really distracting to me and kinda makes me want to put this on mute . Nobody's saying they can't have fun, nobody's saying we want "NO FUN, ALL SRS", for f***'s sake, this just isn't what we want out of our professional wrestling. It makes it hard to take the show seriously when we are clearly supposed to.

I'm sorry, I know I'm probably supposed to hate it because it doesn't "show respect" to the wrestlers (which is BS because they're chanting these things because they LOVE these guys), but I can't get the grin off my face here.
