I used to follow her around her stint at GI. To find out she got canned is the least surprising thing I've heard in a while. Things that don't mix: radical views on expressed sexuality and the age of consent, and working in a representative position for an overtly family-friendly company like Nintendo. Any of the typical troglodyte harassment she has received is exempt from my viewpoint on this, because that is 100% always wrong. Nintendo should have done more to stop this stuff. However, they cannot be blamed for canning someone who is directly and continuously conflicting with their corporate identity. She seems to have a fundamental lack of awareness of herself and how business life works. Example: If Nintendo doesn't want to use you for things because they feel your tattoos and piercings aren't representing them in a professional way, regardless of how archaic that mentality may be, they have a right to choose other people in these sort of positions (she tweeted something about feeling pressured to not get any other cosmetic work done). I'm not sure why someone so clearly expressive and opinionated as her wanted to work in a place where she'd have to exhibit self-constraint. That's clearly not her thing. It just doesn't seem good for either party involved. She used the small fame she gained by being a Nintendo employee to start dialogues about sensitive topics like rape, softening child pornography laws, etc. That's not knocking those subjects or their worth to be discussed, it's questioning the platform and her relative position. Regarding the moonlighting thing, it's shitty that people had such an axe to grind that they'd try and get her canned for that, but if I were Nintendo, I wouldn't want one of my reps doing risque stuff (whatever that exactly is is unclear) behind my back, either. Sounds like she violated company policy by whatever vague thing it was. Allison just constantly pushed boundaries in an environment where it wasn't really appropriate to. She should work for Polygon or one of the many other 'progressive' gaming outlets where they actively encourage those with similar viewpoints and interests. I don't think people were trying to get her fired because of the moonlighting job but more because of her view on child pornography. As for gamergate, think about this for a second. Nintendo is a million dollar company, you really think their going to fired someone just because a group of random people told them to? Nintendo barely listen to it consumer base, let alone a group of people on the internet. *cough cough* Paper Mario Color Splash. You just had to listen nintendo

Can I vent for a bit about how stupid the "-gate" suffix is? Watergate is an actual place where an actual thing happened, please stop attaching it to any stupid little conspiracy that pops up. It minimizes how absurd the entire Watergate scandal was, but worst of all is just lazy. Take it up with Alec Baldwin. Before he named it, it was called Operation Quinnspiracy

You defend Paedophillia, you get fired. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. she did nothing of the sort. that was a gamergate-invented lie. also, videos made by gamergaters are not reliable sources. Unless GamerGate has gained access to cloning technology to have a doppleganger of her speak at conventions and also gained access to a time machine in order to be able to do so before GamerGate even existed, I doubt that's accurate.

In 10 years in the future,we will be telling our kids to behave our Gamergate is going to get then while they are asleep. Every generation has a great war story to tell their children and grandchildren. Our grandpa's and great grandpa's told war stories of World War 1 and 2 and The Korean War. Our grandpa's and fathers told stories of Vietnam. Currently young father's are telling us stories about Bosnia, Gulf War, Afghanistan, and Iraq. We will tell war stories to our children and grandchildren and great grandchildren about GamerGate and how we slayed a bunch of Neckbeards or Social Justice Warriors depending on which side you fought on. Anita Sarkeesian rode in on the DX tank Kotaku and the evil gamers closed the very next day

Why is 'Social Justice Warrior' such an insult? Surely Social Justice is important and worth fighting for? And if you're going to fight for something you may as well be a Warrior!

I'm confused. I thought GamerGate was a thing, like the Great Depression or the War on Drugs. Not the name of group of individual people, like the Boys Scouts or the IWC.

Here's my no frills take on anything GamerGate related: female video game characters are mostly written horribly, the industry desperately needs more diversity if it's going to keep growing, and no one deserves to be harassed.
Amidst all of the debates on how it started, what the intent is and who said or did what, I believe those three things at least have to be considered universal truths.

It'a like I always say: Few really use "warrior" straight-faced anymore, because it's such a dramatic-sounding word. Keyboard Warrior, Weekend Warrior, both common insults. And after the Booty Warrior's* fifteen minutes of fame, I like to think the final nail was in the coffin for the word...well, at least in the U.S. * Under no circumstances to be confused with any members of The New Day

Mike Tyson's Punchout!! is the best video game ever. That's my video game take. I disagree. That title belongs to Tecmo Bowl.

The Keyword there beign hostile. And that's the simplest way to put in. Anymore questions be free to PM.

Why is 'Social Justice Warrior' such an insult? Surely Social Justice is important and worth fighting for? And if you're going to fight for something you may as well be a Warrior! It was coined by them, then was used by their opposition when they started doing things like dogpiling people on Tumblr and doxing. I don't think its a good description because of the term warrior not really ever having negative connotations. Better words I've seen that are more apt are "offendatron" and "cry-bully".

I have almost no knowledge of GameGate unfortunately but as an unbiased person just reading through this thread: if she really had even remotely pro-pedo views, then good riddance, but if that's not the case, i feel awful when I see anyone lose their job, even more so in an industry like that where jobs are almost impossible to acquire.

Pretty sure there's no evidence whatsoever that social justice activists created the term "Social Justice Warrior". Anywho, by the looks of things here Nintendo likely had a legitimate reason to fire her (she broke company policy), but it does seem like somebody may have basically snitched on her for whatever reason. Sad, but at least she's likely to land on her feet.

I'm alright, to me it just sounds like right wing propaganda to make anyone with left wing viewpoints seem irrational or a killjoy.
