I think I enjoyed the last one well enough, but I honestly can't tell you anything about it. There was Blackbeard? And maybe Blackbeard's daughter? That's all I've got. My issue with that last movie was it felt like 2 movies smushed into one - Blackbeard - Search for the Fountain of Youth I found it to be a mess of a movie, And overall I didn't find it all that enjoyable

Am I the only person on the planet who's never been taken by this franchise? It's always felt like it. No! I regrettably went to one of them with a friend back in 2006 when visiting a friend in California. Never had I been so bored at the movies. It just kept dragging. Nearly walked out but didn't want to start a arguement later. Won't make that mistake again. I hear you, brother. Good to know that I'm not alone. I got talked into seeing the second one at the cinema by my gf. The day ended up in a row over the fact she'd dragged me to see such a steaming pile of crap. They really do drag, don't they?

Have either of you seen the first one? The first one I'd go so far as to call an adventure film classic. The sequels are bloated and terrible.

I remember seeing the trailer for the 1st one and laughing at it. "A Disney ride movie?! Come on. And they're skeletons?! Come on!!!"
The actual movie blew me away. While I would replace my snark card later, I absolutely ripped it up after really enjoying that movie.
Anything beyond that - which were fun at the time, don't get me wrong - were largely unnecessary. They really get too big for their own britches.
But that said.......the idea of a Pirates franchise is a nice one. The recurring people at this point (Depp, Rush, and Kevin McNally - the latter 2 creating some of the best pirates ever put to film, second only to Robert Newton's Long John Silver) are very enjoyable characters, but get thrust into largely ridiculous plots. But the films are always good for at least 1 viewing.

Yes. Yes they do drag. It didn't help matters that we had to wait in line for two plus hours and we had tickets. This was after a long conversation of my friend finally convincing me to see it, after telling her repeatedly I wouldn't enjoy it as I saw the previews and knew it looked really boring. No I've never seen the first one. Just the third. I'm faking death if she ask me to see the one next year. More power to fans of the franchise it just isn't for me.

I do recommend the first, It's actually a good fun movie with good pacing. The sequels are shit though

They really do drag, don't they? Gore Verbinsky mentions on the director's commentary for the first one that by the time they get to the scene where Jack and Elizabeth are marooned everything the audience needs to know to end the movie is in place, but there's still 40 minutes of movie left to run. That does kinda sum up the whole series in general.

I LOVED the first one. It's honestly probably in my top 20 favorite movies.
I hated the second one so much that I never bothered to try watching any of the other ones. It was seriously such a convoluted, unfocused mess of a movie that it completely ruined my chances of ever enjoying the rest of the series.

I've only seen the second one, really no desire to watch the others or to watch it again.

As an animal lover, I'm disgusted by this video of a dead horse being beaten.

Before Johnny Depp turned 50, and everyone went on about it-he could do no wrong, now nothing seems to go right, and that's too bad

Amber Heard should play Cutler Beckett's vengeful wife.

I love the first two parts of this franchise. I swear I've seen "Dead Man's Chest" close to twenty times. The third one disappointed and the fourth one got off to an okay start before falling apart in the second half. This one looks cool though.

It really has been a series of diminishing returns in terms of quality. The first was fantastic. Perfect balance between the darker story elements and the fun, lighthearted tone you get from classic swashbucklers. The second got more serious, throwing away most of the lighter tone and having all the characters be complete shits to each other. The third one had almost no levity that didn't feel forced, was grim, extremely convoluted, completely wasted Norrington and Governor Swann, had Depp's least-inspired performance as Jack, and was only kept afloat by Geoffrey Rush's performance. The fourth one... oh boy. The forgettable mermaid romance subplot pretty much sums up that mess. A better movie honestly would've been Barbossa vs. Blackbeard.

It seriously never got to diminish with me. I've never seen past 2. I thought the drop off in quality was so bad that it really soured me on the entire series. It was like if Scorsese had followed Goodfellas with White Chicks. I'll still watch the first one, but I'll never make myself sit through any of the others.

Supposedly the new one is supposed to call back to the original in tone. The problem is it still looks like they're forcing in the romance subplot. No one remembers anything about the subplot from the last one except that a mermaid was involved.

Can't decide whether that looks terrible or merely okay. My problem is that pirates have been a staple in fiction since at least as early as the 1700s and probably earlier, so surely from the hundreds of years of stories and legends they could find something different to do than rehash "Jack Sparrow runs afoul of a crew of supernatural pirates" for the third time?
Hell, they even made half of Blackbeard's crew zombies!
