It wasn't my favorite, and I felt it had a really weak middle as a whole, but it ended strong. Their family is apparently significantly more forgiving than I am, but I loved Deckard on the plane doing his thing. I'd call shenanigans on the whole cloak and dagger thing Dom pulled, but they established this is a thing they can do ever since F5. Honestly there were really only a handful of cars I liked: Little Nobody's Subaru BRZ and WRX Sti Dom's Plymouth GTX and ridiculous EMP-equipped Charger. That's...it, honestly. Exotics and luxury cars do not do it for me. {Spoiler}Jetpacks tho. There were jetpacks. That was the hypest shit.

{Spoiler} I enjoyed the movie well enough and for whatever reason I didn't mind the Statham/Deckard face turn at all. In fact he and The Rock pretty much made this one. That said I don't get the random Owen Shaw face turn. There are so many questions. First, how did he get out of prison? Where was he all this time? Did his brother let him out somehow during the beginning of 7? It happened too late in the film to give him any sort of characterization. Deckard Shaw isn't such a loathsome character that you couldn't turn him face, but Owen? He was probably the most evil villain in any of the movies.
Charlize Theron was okay I guess but a female villain doesn't exactly suit this series. Since the films have to stay in the PG-13 range they aren't going to go into the realm of male on female killing, so I knew Statham wasn't going to just waste her there at the end. I don't need to see Cipher again really, so why not just have her plane crash into the submarine or something? In fact I think one area where this movie was lacking is the secondary villains. The 6th/7th movies had fun heels like Klaus, various martial arts dudes, etc. We just had the red headed bearded guy and that was it.
Tyrese Gibson probably got the best crowd reactions at the theater I was in, so I am puzzled at the hate here. Rock's line of "Hey, shrinkage, get in!" had me in tears. It was interesting going in knowing about the legit Rock/Diesel beef, since you could tell they kept them apart as much as possible in the film. Other than the scene where Toretto turns on Hobbs they share basically no screen time and don't even especially mingle at the end on the roof!
I do have a question about the Elena character. When was she pregnant with the kid? She clearly wasn't at the end of F & F 6 where she was now working with The Rock, and there was also no sign of this in her brief scene in 7. Her character was so tossed aside for the last 2 movies before this that some in the theater I was in thought Torretto had cheated on Letty with her, even though if you recall Fast Five he clearly hadn't since at that point Letty was dead in storyline. I need some timeline to put this in perspective.

Just checking in. Exactly how many times do any of the characters mention the word "family"?

I watched it last night. One of the weakest in the series. The villain did not fit into the universe as they were just in the background. It was not as big action wise as previous ones. And the plot took forever to unfold. Just not my cup of tea.

As I said Cipher needed some better henchmen heels. She's basically an executive/hacker villain type so we needed more guys that were amusing as underlings. I think the 6th one has the best array of bad guys.

Movie was laughable.
I don't know that there is anything in this movie that the many previews did not spoil.
Good for a mindless popcorn flick I guess, but yeh, none of the serious moments made sense - everything was like one big joke.
"I'M GONNA BEAT YOU LIKE A CHEROKEE DRUM" has to be the stupidest sounding threat ever uttered.

These movies aren't at all for me, but I do kind of wonder what it'll mean going forward that for the weekend at the box office it came in well behind expectations. Still made money hand over fist and set records, because obviously there's a huge market for it, but still was expected to make way more domestically this weekend than it actually did.
Though really it probably just means they put too lofty of expectations on it to begin with given the last one's the only one that really hit the kind of stuff they were projecting for this one and that had the Paul Walker thing likely factoring into that.

This happened 10 years ago with Grindhouse. I think. Easter weekend might just be a deadzone for movie openings.

There are rumors that it is the biggest global box office opening of all time...how is that behind expectations? The Rock even posted it on Instagram. It was really hard to get tickets in my country since so many people went to see it.

There are rumors that it is the biggest global box office opening of all time...how is that behind expectations? I just mean on a domestic level. It was projected to do $115 million, it actually did $100 million. Nothing to scoff at by any means but that's still a pretty major chunk of change difference. The thing's still a huge hit, just kind of wonder if it's worth reading into that apparently domestically the thing's about 15% less popular than they thought it was.

I want to know how this movie somehow beat out Star Wars for the biggest global opening weekend of all time. Where did it make all its money? China?

I want to know how this movie somehow beat out Star Wars for the biggest global opening weekend of all time. Where did it make all its money? China? So there are two reasons for it: 1. Star Wars didnt release worldwide at the same time, it came out later in China. Fast and Furious franchise is partly financed from china and also gets released at the same time globally. 2. People in China don´t find Star Wars that great. This movie is in the top 3 opening weeks of all time in China. No one cares about domestic openings anymore. We live in a connected world, this isnt the 80s.

Eh if anything people care too much about China as a market. Studios get what, 25% of the take? Even making 100 million there means a studio gets about 25, so why bend over backwards? In reality I think Furious 7 was a bit of an outlier with all of the hype surrounding Walker's death, somewhat like with Heath Ledger and The Dark Knight. I did notice a serious drop off on Easter Sunday, which makes me think it's a bad idea to release something on Easter. Why didn't they just do it a week earlier?

Yeah, Furious 7 had a shit ton of hype largely in part to Paul Walkers untimely death.
This will be a success, as will the next two, but I feel they're going to have to keep upping the ante with premises and new characters.

We will probably get an "empire" moment in the next one. Eh if anything people care too much about China as a market. Studios get what, 25% of the take? This movie is probably going to make 500mil in China, so 25% are not exactly pocket change. If the next one has scenes in China, it could easy break a billion there alone. The problem rather is that China doesnt like every type of movie and it isnt worth it for every movie.

{Spoiler}So let me get this straight: Deckard, a mass-murderer whose brother was largely responsible for the death of Giselle, straight up kills Han yet is still accepted into the "family" at the end?
The f***?

Enjoyed it for the action pieces and the usual Fast and Furious bickering, Statham was excellent.

{Spoiler} At least the film's plot does give Deckard Shaw a character arc to turn him babyface. And saving Dom's son probably was a way to make good on killing Han. I had a bigger problem with Owen Shaw suddenly turning up like "He's good now!" He had no screen time to set this up and it was a glorified cameo that made zero sense. Deckard was angry in a misdirected sense of family loyalty, but now he realizes it was Cipher that was behind it.
