Oh, Billy, you silly goose, you gave him a cushy spot in the new NWA, didn't you? He made Tharpe president. But it's ok, it's really just a title without any power.

Billy Corgan going around buying old wrestling companies only to get screwed in short order is a show I'd watch for at least a couple of seasons.
This week, Corgan buys the AWA, but little does he know...
Next month, Billy wins controlling interest in Stampede Wrestling, but the Harts have a van gassed up and ready to go as soon as the contract is signed.
And during sweeps, Billy actually comes to terms on a deal to buy the WWF... but what are all these pandas doing here?

All I can read is "This bald clown gave a shit ton of cash for three letters and blurry tapes". Well I wish Mr Corgan the best of luck, Tim Storm vs Aiden O'Shea is a main event anywhere in the world, er country, town? Arena? High school gym? Flea market. Yes a flea market.

"I am confident he has the ability to take the NWA to the next level" That sounds extremely familiar.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say it is a good move by Corgan. He is buying an established brand while very low in importance to most fans, has a history to build upon. With the large of amount of talented wrestlers who are unknown to the masses in the indies, he can build a core roster of people with actual upside. The NWA struggles to modernize itself to keep relevance. If Billy reigns himself in from going all social issues with the NWA and fight off giving pushes to those cutting a check, he might be able to create something worthwhile.

I'm an NWA fan and I'm a fan of Billy Corgan (Musically) but I don't want him involved in the National Wrestling Alliance UNLESS he sticks to the traditions of the brand and has a territory system throughout the world, one world champion and a legitimate alliance that is focused on the old school style of wrestling and not Vince Russo B.S
By the way, Tony Brooklyn (Tharpe's old business partner) is reporting that the deal was done for under 60,000 USD. Take that for what you will.

But the NWA he's getting isn't the NWA of the past. He has no rights to any of the former legends or titles. he has almost no footage rights. He doesn't have a promotion. he basically bought the rights to the letters and even then he can't merchandise them because the other NWA has the copyright on it for t-shirts. Not to mention the National Wrestling Alliance hasn't really meant anything to the majority of wrestling fans in almost 30 years at this point.

Corgan is looking to establish a base for a future promotion. Plus he is a wrestling history buff and owns the St Louis territory film library. NWA may not mean much to most wrestling fans but it still carries some weight in certain areas. Japan still marks out for it regardless of their current status and reputation.

I'm really curious to know what he paid for it Oh man I am incredibly curious about this. Just put the NWA title on Courtney Love. Having her in that title lineage would be f***ing hilarious. Flair would cry. But then, Flair always cries. Flair cries when his toast is a little overdone. Actually, no, when it's underdone he cries. When it's overdone, he blades with it.

Does this effect any o the indys that use the nwa name? I'm confused about that Undetermined as of now. It's all going to depend on exactly what Billy has in mind in terms of restructuring the system. If he wants to do a WWE style promotion with its own internal "brands" and sub-promotions, he'll likely phase the old NWA indies out when their renewals come up. Same thing if he wants to do franchising but has a different idea of which indy feds he wants to be part of it. Or he could be totally happy with handing the name out to every promoter with a few bucks for the rest of time. Who knows.

He basically bought the rights to the letters and even then he can't merchandise them because the other NWA has the copyright on it for t-shirts. The National Wrestling Alliance has sold shirts with their own trademarked logo on them for decades. Nothing has changed. They can sell their own shirts. ![](http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sepzWTOYTCY/UTZ0LO073yI/AAAAAAAADb0/xcIzwyWKlds/s1600/nwa-atlantic+canada-wrestling+shirts.JPG)

I'm really curious to know what he paid for it Just put the NWA title on Courtney Love. Having her in that title lineage would be f***ing hilarious. Not sure if you're serious but I've seen a couple of these posts where someone says put the belt on Corgan or Love or whatever. The National Wrestling Alliance still means something to people. Sure, your general wrestling fan doesn't know it exists and your average hardcore fan sticks their nose up at it and laughs but in the history of wrestling the NWA and the NWA World Heavyweight Title mean a great deal. Yes, the NWA World Heavyweight Title has been held by some wrestlers who can be described as losers with Jax Dane, Kahagas and Tim Storm being laughable champions but Corgan holds a very valuable commodity in his hands. Some people (Such as myself) hold the NWA very dear to our hearts and Corgan ruining that would be absolutely unforgivable. Tharpe has taken out a rifle and fired a few rounds into it but Corgan could grow bored with the NWA and just keep it as an asset which would quite literally kill 69 years of professional wrestling history. I personally hold out hope that Corgan will organise 10-15 strong independent promotions (1-2 being "national") and that we'll have something similar to the old NWA in which all members meet annually, all members get a vote on who the World Heavyweight Champion is and book for the good of the alliance instead of themselves. Unfortunately NWA World Champion Courtney Love wouldn't achieve that.
