It's seasonal with me. A high alcohol Russian imperial stout or a Porter with vanilla or coffee notes is great when it's chillingly cold, snowy and general winter weather. Oh man, I love me some of this guy right here I have also definitely cooled off a little bit on IPAs. For awhile it was all I drank and it seemed liked it just started to be a competition of who could get their beer the hoppiest after awhile and the flavors just became completely uninteresting. I'm cellar aging a bottle of Firestone-Walker 2013 Parabola right now. I'm really about a year past ideal aging but I can't bring myself to drink it. I had one in 2013 fresh and it rocked.

People like the taste and and the feeling it can provide, whether as a social lubricant or just something to take the edge off. As for outlawing things you don't like...well, just remember how that last thread on that went. So you've pretty much admitted what I've thought for years...people only drink for the drug effects of alcohol. Thanks for proving my point I guess. And that would leave me without a job and 99% of my social life, so no thanks. Why do you need alcohol for a social life? Outside of local brews: tried one in Memphis called Ghost River I really liked. Also Flying Saucer, my favorite name brand is currently Blue Moon. Maybe it's the oranges. Don't judge me. Beer is an acquired taste, and as has been mentioned, there are different tastes to try No one HAS to get smashed to like beer, but sitting around with some friends, havin wings or pizza while watchin a fight or ballgame f***in rulesAnd you can't do that with non-alcoholic beverages why? Hey, this was my thread about my first experience & beer in general. Please don't derail it with soapbox grandstanding.

I can't help but appreciate that the alcohol thread featured an argument that came out of nowhere and escalated really quickly just like it does with barstool heroes. Now I need a drink... So.. Who do you think was Britain's greatest Prime Minister?

By that rationale people should be getting wasted every time they drink alcohol. They don't. I drink alcohol almost exclusively because a particular wine or cider pairs well with a particular meal. If a non-alcoholic beverage similarly enhances a different meal, I'll pick accordingly. The "drug effects" are of no consideration to me, and I've only been drunk once this decade.See, that's the thing I don't understand. If the effects of alcohol have no consideration, why not drink the non-alcoholic version instead? I seriously don't understand at all. Outside of you completely ignoring my point about people liking the taste, and this ridiculous straw man of not being able to construct a social life without alcohol, then yeah, I suppose I proved your bizarre point of...what? Being a sheltered jerk who wants to ban things he doesn’t like or partake in?Seriously, people can maturely enjoy booze and appreciate it for entirely different reasons that don’t appeal to you but are still fine. If you honestly think people only drink for the “drug effect”...after having otherwise explained to you? You know as little about booze as you do sex, and it’s getting to be pretty clear that those are just symptoms of knowing little about people in general.Drop your straw man of people “not being able to do things without alcohol” and learn that people like to do things...and also like alcohol. Firstly, I don't want to ban anything. I just want to understand why people drink alcohol. I've never fully understood why people do, and I probably never will. And you also resort to calling me a 'sheltered jerk'? You're lucky I don't fly off the handle and say something I'll regret. Secondly, no, I still don't understand why people would drink alcohol if not for the effects of alcohol. If it wasn't for the alcoholic effects, then why not just drink the non-alcoholic version of the same thing? I've never understood any of it. Also this part of your post: Firstly, as I've attempted to make VERY clear multiple times, that sex thread was purely hyperbolic and not meant to be literal. IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH MY OWN PERSONAL THOUGHTS, FEELINGS OR VIEWS ON SEX. And secondly, I'll fully admit that I don't understand people at all. People make zero sense in general, and I'll probably never completely understand how or why people do things...so if that was meant to be an insult, you've failed. I swear, I can't stand this forum or anybody on it anymore. I'M DONE. "I'M DONE" Me too k bye bye Back to Jdogs first beer or general beer talk. As someone who wants to figure out how to find the right craft beer for me, I'm enjoying this thread.

Usually you can choose 4 or so beers, and you get a small serving of each. The staff at those types of places are also usually good at making recommendations.

When I was younger I was pretty set, cold ass MGD or Modelo Negra if I wanted something different tasting. But when I quit smoking suddenly it all tasted like ass to me. Jump ahead a decade later I'm a Jack and Coke guy these days but I miss sipping on a beer so this is one of those "I keep meaning to get to" kinda missions and wanna jump on this whole craft train. The world went from just being "domestic vs imported" to IPA and a billion other options and I dunno where to even start haha

Quit cold turkey like 3 or 4 different times in my life, but then I quit quitting several times too and started smoking again. Currently this is the longest I've not smoked, 7? 8 years now? I miss the act of doing it and the 10 minutes to myself outside at a time. Hell I even crave sometimes still, so I buy jolly ranchers or sunflower seeds now and again.

Yeah, Heinekens first major flaw is in its bottling. Green bottles provide minimal protection from UV light. Skunking can occur in green bottles within minutes. Corona is in a clear bottle so it begins skunking the second it hits UV light. Lime is added to Corona to cover up the skunked taste and aroma. the chemical reaction creates a substance called mercaptan. The same chemical emitted highly concentrated from skunks. Interesting, so the term "skunked beer" actually comes from a chemical compound associated with skunks, I didn't know that.

Since this thread seems to be talking about booze recommendations in general, does anyone have any good local Breweries/Distilleries? We got a Distillery in the city that makes some damn good spirits, and even released Whiskey last year (which according to my dad is delicious, wouldn't know myself because that stuff tastes like poison).

Chicago has many, but I haven't actually checked many of them out - I think I've only had Revolution and Goose Island, two of the larger ones. Some of the best beer I've had was at a place called The Grumpy Troll in Wisconsin Wisconsin is also of course home to the fantastic New Glarus brewery, of Spotted Cow fame (a beer only available in Wisconsin). It has an AMAZING beer garden to relax and drink beer at. I've also been to 3 Floyds in Indiana. Great food, better beer, and an amazingly long wait. Michigan has an abundance of great beer. Hell, look at this map! www.mibeer.com/find-mi-beer

My Dad persuades me to have one every now and then when I visit him at work but only really then do I ever drink. I usually get a Stella but I found Red Apple Ale to taste pretty good

The chemical compound (which has a larger name than I can remember) is in a lot of organic matte. It's the reason why some people's pee smells after digesting asparagus. In beer the smell and taste of skunked beer is caused when UV light breaks down the alpha acid compounds from the hops in beer. Bottled Corona is always skunked because of the clear bottles. It's ruined before you take the first sip. Miller High Life uses a liquid hop compound so their beer doesn't skunk despite being in clear bottles.

Breweries around here (Massachusetts) seem to pop up every month. Our brewery just opened in September. We have a 7600 sq ft campus with a 7 barrel system, large tap room with local distribution. Lots of work, especially piled ontop of other jobs.

You get different flavors from different strains of yeast and what sugars the yeast eats. It can change the whole profile of the beer. For example if you compare the flavor of Bud Light to its competition (Miller Lite, Coors Light) Bud Light will take on a slight green apple/grassy taste because it's brewed for a shorter amount of time allowing flavors from a chemical compound called acetelaldehyde to be present in the beer. It's such a complex process
