DDP was at his peak at that point though. He's feuded with Hogan most of the summer. Had a lot of mainstream appeal thanks to doing the angles with Karl Malone and Jay Leno. It would have been taking the title off a guy super hot in Goldberg to a guy who is also hot in DDP. Could've even had Goldberg win the title back at Starrcade. Have him dominate the WW3 battle royal and he wins it back in December. Goldberg wouldn't have lost any of his aura by losing. I agree that DDP was at his peek and I would not have minded DDP winning there. That being said, I have never bought DDP as a top guy. He always felt like an imposter to me. I felt the same way about Booker T not being a main event guy until they went ahead and put the WCW World title on him and he 'grew' into it. I'm debating whether or not giving DDP the victory over Goldberg would've made him much more of a huge deal during that whole 'Taker/DDP feud (but then I remember how unholy the jobs were that they put Booker T through, not only to The Rock and Austin in hilariously pitiful ways, but Booker T also got Sweet Chin Music-ed in the face by HBK WITHOUT RETALIATION to this day, and let's not even mention the 'Mania feud with Hunter...) I think someone else in this thread said it best, this match is where DDP peaked as a babyface. Still the best guy WCW had without any undefeated gimmicks I'll warrant.

I think someone else in this thread said it best, this match is where DDP peaked as a babyface. Still the best guy WCW had without any undefeated gimmicks I'll warrant. About Booker T, while yea he grew into the role, it came so much out of nowhere his title reign. And WCW was coming out of their nWo era where they had all these big stars, Booker being the Champ felt like a downgrade somehow. This was 2000 and say around 1997 or 1998, Booker was one of the most over talent in the company and fans were popping for him, he always had the best matches. If they had build him up from there and made him WCW champ in 1999, I believe he would have been a believable credible Champ. But so many mistakes were made with the company and himself in particular that giving him the title in 2000 just had little impact. And really anybody that would have been chosen at the time would have felt wrong anyway. Something I realised in retrospect was how much of a great character DDP was as this blue collar hero. They probably should have given him some sort of special title made for him. Like above mid-carders but below the 6 to 7 top stars that WCW had. In many way HHH was a lot like DDP. In that they were the sort of stars that worked well with bigger stars but when you decide to push them it's because your top guys cannot be used anymore and they have enough to them to make them the center of the show but it takes a lot patience and faith because they cannot be "the" guy in a successful promotion. In many ways Vince tried to make Hunter the guy in 1999 because Rock was going more and more to Hollywood, Austin was banged up and Vince never really wanted to center his promotions around cartoon characters like Taker, Mankind and Kane. Here there was this good-looking guy with a great body, who was involved in every feuds in the AE who could talk and wrestle. So Vince went let's go for it. It was successful cause Vince wanted to be and WCW was basically self-crumbling. WCW could easily have done that with all their top guys getting old.
