If we're honest, original Thundercats was mostly shitty. I loved it, have fond memories of it, but it was pure Velveeta most of the time.

How Thundercats made money in the '80s wouldn't be feasible today. The backbone was a toy line during one of the strongest periods for figure lines ever, with a pre-sold syndicated show of 65 episodes at a time, to an audience that had completely different sensibilities. Things have to be adjusted to what works today. As far as the show goes, eh. I'm not a current cartoon watcher anyway, so it's not my thing. My Thundercats is perfectly safe in my memory and in history and in all the bajillion DVDs and toys and whatnot that are still floating around. I'm still mega-pissed the Mattel Classics line folded after only five figures, but maybe this could serve as a launching point for it to be revived and continued by someone. Even with the new show, new merch for the classic stuff won't completely disappear. I meant how in the sense of "how does it appeal, how does it sell". Same thing. Things that appealed to kids of 1986 aren't going to appeal to the kid of 2018. We're talking a 30+ year gap there in how society and culture has changed. There isn't one thing on any TV or streaming channel in current times that is designed in the same way the toy commercial 80s action cartoons were. Because they don't appeal to kids anymore. What does appeal to kids today? Adventure Time. Groot and Rocket. Deadpool (even as I shake my head at that notion). Steven Universe. Rick and Morty. Things with hard comedic edges and with less bland "I'm a noble warrior with no real personality beyond 'good guy'" crap that we ate up as kids. Things change. It's life. Frankly, I can't tell you how happy I am the internet didn't exist when I was a kid so that it could tell me that I had to hate Muppet Babies and A Pup Named Scooby-Doo because they were bastardizations of the originals. Or to hate GI Joe because it wasn't foot-tall dolls with realistic hair anymore and had more sci-fi elements. Or the awesome but short-lived Mighty Mouse by Bakshi because it parodied the original shorts.

Also, it wasn’t like an executive spun a wheel and picked an old franchise to do a show on. Someone, obviously a fan of the old show, pitched the show and wanted to front it. Cartoon Network said yes and here we are.

The only difference is I believe using an Old IP not related to the style of show doesn`t work and you argue that does.

Kinda echoes all the different things that have been said in the thread already but here's our podcast we did over the weekend. Decent amount of language throughout so *LANGUAGE WARNING*.

Bakshi Mighty Mouse was great. I mean BatBat alone was magic.

I want to preface this by saying I'm NOT a fan of Thundercats. Never really have been. I just really REALLY hate this trend or rebooting with bad comedy and dopey art styles.
It sucks even worse that there's nothing I can do about it. I'm in an era where creativity fails and mediocrity prevails.

Art looks like ass but then I've never been a Thundercats fan, so I wouldn't have been watching it anyway.

It's surprising to hear Lauren Faust of all people trotting out the old " action shows aren't profitable, kids don't watch them" angle as an excuse for this thing, because it's not a branch very far removed on the Great Tree of Sweeping Generalizations from the one that goes " boys don't watch girl's shows" - you know, the accusation that one of the most popular and successful shows she created was regularly subject to. (And doesn't she have a DC superhero show in the works? So weird.) I swear, Twitter is the Achilles' heel for content creators. They get exposed to one too many dummies saying dumb things on the internet, it pollutes their overall impression of fans and consumers, and then - what do you know - they start sounding saying dumb things too. If you're at all in the entertainment industry or have any artistic ambitions whatsoever, stay the hell off Twitter.

I would agree with her that basic cable really isn’t the place for animated action shows right now, especially not when modern video games are so story focused and detailed now. Voltron took off because older kids are more likely to stream shows.

Just saw this on Facebook. Wow.....lol. I saw a friend post this, too...not going to get into the politics of all of it, but it certainly made me chuckle. The last point is a pretty relevant one to so many of these idiotic internet dust-ups, though: people who actually get angry at this stuff keep throwing their barbs at other regular folks out there, rather than trying to make informed decisions as consumers in a modern media economy that, well, yeah, it does emphasize what is familiar and comforting at the expense of originality and risk-taking...granted, mass media has always had that tendency, but it's particularly pronounced in a thoroughly interconnected digital world where information travels and is discussed and argued over within the first minute it's been disseminated. "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars..." and all that; we (the general "we", not each of us as individuals) reward such actions very often, and then wonder why all of the major studios try to replicate the successes of those who hit pay dirt. Meanwhile, we become angry when we feel that those cold, calculating studio heads don't wish to cater specifically to us this time around, whatever the product might be, and so create a toxic environment around what is, ultimately, a simple concept aimed at children or mass audiences instead of just kind of shrugging, enjoying our memories of the originals, and moving on with our lives. That fact that in this case it's a bunch of grown men doing it to a kid's show just gives it an added level of awfulness, but it happens with lots of different groups in lots of different mediums, all the while the superstructures around us stand unchallenged.

Looks like shit. So unlike the original that they may as well have just created a new show from scratch.

I just hope the Netflix She-Ra is good
and if it is then they do things like He-man, Jem & Visionaries.
