Fox are cash rich after their mass deal with Disney, so they urgently needed fresh programming. They're going to put SmackDown on Friday nights as the anchor for that night, and get reliable ratings for that night. Wonder if NBCU respond by moving RAW to NBC? *checks schedule for Monday nights on NBC.com* Kiss _The Voice_ and Bear Grylls goodbye, lads.

At this point does WWE even have to worry about ticket sales ? Meltzer said this last week The SDL crew doesn't have to do SHIT anymore. They're set for the next 5 years.

This is probably one of the biggest days in Wrestling history. This changes everything about how we judge the business. Ticket sales don’t matter anymore. PPVs don’t matter anymore. Wrestlers as draws will be harder to judge. So many interesting angles for us to talk about for next 18 months. Super excited.

There's a bit in the Hollywood Reporter article that states that WWE actually got a higher bid from a third party, but chose FOX because FOX committed to promote SmackDown on its NFL and MLB coverage. That's smart, considering the deal starts a month into the 2019 NFL season, and during the MLB Postseason.

Do you think Vince passed out in the meeting when they threw that number out there.

We tend to be so hung up on criticising WWE booking that its easy to forget they're making smart moves from a corporate perspective.

Yeah, being on actual FOX is a gamechanger. WWE will have, for the first time ever, have a weekly presence on a broadcast network. It’s amazing how things change so quickly. It wasn’t that long ago that they had to accept an embarrassing TV deal. Now both NBC and FOX arelingomg up to pay them hundreds of millions of dollars. Remember, Smackdown started on broadcast television with UPN and then moving to the CW. It was on broadcast television before, even thought neither is on the same level of Fox.

So, as I suggested in the NBCU thread, that confirms circa $200m per annum for SmackDown! alone (way above Meltzer's speculation by the way). That's an increase of $170m per year for SD! alone.
Now, there's a little confusion regarding RAW, as Meltzer is throwing around $240m, based on the speculated current deal of $160m (half for RAW x 3). However, other reports suggest that the RAW deal is $150m every year (plus the additional $30m for SD!), and apparently that could be been tripled. So, the minimum that we're looking at for this new rights deal is $440m, with a possible maximum of $650m.

When I first heard that Fox was interested in Smackdown I was wondering if they would have to be preempted one week a year for the World Series. Airing on Fridays where they usually don't have games solves that.

Looking five years out, imagine the bidding war if SmackDown meets or exceeds expectations...
Not just that, but other smaller promotions could get some cable slots as well, possibly undoing some of the damage Impact is said to have caused.
Dare I say...
New? Boom?

It’s just crazy that a company that’s been average at best is getting rewarded like this. I guess I can see why Vince doesn’t care about the fans anymore though. He doesn’t have to, he gets to do what he wants & still make a big profit even if the show sucks & a large amount of fans are unhappy with the product.

I could be WAY off base here, but how are WWE going to react when SDL stars beating RAW in the ratings?

This is definitely the start of a new boom period just because of the money. WWE never approached this type of money in the 80s or 90s even adjusting for inflation.
