What does he mean breaking the curse of video game movie adaptations? Detective Pikachu already did that. Given that the final product was a fun, (albeit very campy) schlock, I think it could be argued Mortal Kombat either broke the curse or got very close back in 1995.

What does he mean breaking the curse of video game movie adaptations? Detective Pikachu already did that. The recent live action film of "Tomb Raider" was very good too. The breaking the curse of video game adaptations is merely speaking about how several of them have been awful. You'd think they'd also include the first "Silent Hill" as being a decent adaptation too. "Mortal Kombat", "Silent Hill", and "Tomb Raider" were all decent to good in my opinion.

I just saw an early showing, and wow, that was pretty fun. Ben Schwartz sounds kinda Dewey-ish at points, but there’s so much heart in his Sonic performance. Carrey is totally out of his mind here, and he still manages to make an intimidating Robotnik.
My only nitpicks are a few cheesy jokes and how I felt it could have been longer for more buildup, but it’s entertaining regardless if you’re a Sonic fan or otherwise.

{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}Saw it last night. I remember when details initially came out, I was skeptical of a lot. The crappy first trailer, Sonic's first design, a fish out of water tale that 99% took place on a non-Sonicy Earth, worries about toilet humor (as is the case for some PG movies), Sonic being a second banana to the live action leads because CGI budget. But I ended up enjoying it, thought it was fun and had heart. Sonic was "fixed" (although I won't begrudge anybody who liked the first look), the story works (thanks in part to most of the humans Sonic interacts with being quirky in their own ways), there is only one lame fart joke, and it still feels like Sonic's movie, despite Ben Schwartz not getting first billing on the principal credits.
Speaking of Schwartz, he does a terrific as Sonic. Plus Jim Carrey steals the show as Robotnik by being 90's Jim Carrey, and James Marsden's Tom is a way more likable human friend to Sonic than Sonic X's Chris.
It wouldn't have hurt to tone down the pandering to really young kids, or allow for a little more time to breathe. It also wouldn't have hurt to be more original in some areas, like not having a popular song of the time playing while the speed of the world is dropped to .001% from Sonic's POV in ultra speed mode, while he does a lot of shit (like the "Time in a Bottle" and "Sweet Dreams" sequences from X-Men: DoFP and Apocalypse).
Still, I enjoyed it, and would be on board for a sequel. A fortunate case of a video game movie not sucking.

Boy that was fun {Spoiler}onic was very emotional in the film...not just brazen and cool, just shows you those urban rumours of mandates Sega give about the character to creators are bullshit. Yeah, there was no sobbing, but there was longing, and some anger directed at Tom for wanting to leave Green Hill. Jim I enjoyed, but I feel his best scenes had already been spoiled in the trailers. In fact, a lot of the story's strongest beats were already there in the trailers, so it was just a case of enjoying whatever connected the dots.
The bar scene was the standout for me, and I liked how Sonic was put in mortal peril in two major instances in the movie. Robotnik was out for blood. Wish more had been developed in the town with the characters, felt weird to set up people Sonic could interact with and sacrifice it all for a generic road trip plot...maybe for the sequel I guess. See it. Bring the kids. Let them get noisy.

Fair warning, photos and filmed footage of the after credits scene has started to leak online, so be careful if you don't want spoilers. It is already on YouTube via "leaked Sonic ending" if you're curious. Having watched it I'll say this: {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW}I shudder to think what Tails' would have looked like with the original Sonic design sensibilities. ... I wish we still lived in that world with the original design. {Spoiler}I will say that slideshows of the original movie designs would make for some nifty DVD/BD extras.

Well, this is quite the turnaround from when we all first heard the opening notes to Gangster's Paradise.

somebody who's seen the film, lemme know somehow if we're gonna see Fat Robotnik in the film {Spoiler}No, he stays skinny all the way through. However, they are able to justify the Eggman nickname by Robotnik calling his drones eggs, and Sonic calling him that after noting the drones' shapes himself.

Took my 16 year old and his friend.
We had a blast!
It was funny, little meta, the good kind of cheesy, and action packed,

Looks like the movie's a hit - it was projected to do $40 million for the weekend, it did over $20 million just for Friday.

Got back from the theater and man, I loved it. Funny, Jim Carry was insane, and just a genuinely fun movie.
