This topic is inspired by the fact that I didn't realize Corey Graves had been wrestling on the indies for years and was in ROH before he signed to WWE. I didn't start paying attention to NXT until after he retired so I always thought he was some performance center guy they felt bad about and decided to give another shot on commentary. It wasn't until his comments about being former friends with Punk that it clicked in my head because I was trying to wrap my head around how that was possible until I looked at his Wikipedia. Do you have any of those duh moments?

Probably not what you meant, but I only recently got the “joke” behind Ivory’s name.

Not totally WWE, but it took me about a year to get "Justin Credible."
"Credible" actually is a good last name for a wrestler! I guess on some level I wanted to believe they wouldn't do THAT BAD a pun.

Bret "The Hitman" Hart's finisher was called "The Sharpshooter" because he's the hitman. Even his nicknames "The Excellence of Execution" and "The Best There Is, The Best There Was and The Best There Ever Will Be" all relate to how he's a hitman and how great he is in his craft.

I can’t think of a WWE example, but just yesterday I found out that “Black Mirror” = a phone/computer/tv screen and I’m still dealing with that.

It took me entirely too long to realize that "RKO" are Randy Orton's initials.

It took me entirely too long to realize that "RKO" are Randy Orton's initials. I knew that part, but it did take me years to realise it was supposed to be a pun on the TKO. Speaking of pun based finishers, at one point rockstar gimmick wrestler Heath Slater used the Overdrive as a finisher.

Meanwhile, I was confused for years why they spelled Val Venis' name with an I instead of a U. Then some years later it dawned on me that it was a play on penis. I mean, to be fair, I was only 10 when he debuted, but it still took me longer to figure it out than I'm willing to admit.

I did not realize Andrade Cien Almas was previously La Sombra. I had heard of La Sombra as a named bandied about as this guy down in Mexico who is supposed to be good. And at the same time I was watching Almas and thinking "wow this guy is pretty good for a rookie". When I finally looked up his wikipedia I felt like I had not been paying attention.

As his WWE theme song says "LA SOMBRA!" yes... you were clearly not paying attention

I only recently realised why New Day’s finisher is called the Midnight Hour... I just thought it was an obscure pop culture reference I didn’t get.
Because the Midnight Hour is the start of a New Day...
