Also the "Ric Flair Effect". Dude has been around for so long it's impossible to boo him anymore.

He took wrestling global; a lot of people's first exposure to wrestling would have been WWF/WWE.
He has a lot of character flaws, but in the moment I think people cheer because for better or worse, he built the ship. You're probably not thinking about the way he did it or his various other issues when you hear his music hit.

It’s weird. For ALL the things we as a fanbase say and believe about Vince, his crowd reactions whenever he shows up have always been strong (and probably stronger than when he was a regular character, now that people try to sing his theme). It has only been one crowd, the post-WM RAW crowd after WM33 that has actually tried to give out about the booking directly to him in the ring (“FIRE ROMAN” chants), and he basically just went “Whatevs, brah” and did his promo. Yeah, that was so annoying when he just brushed it off like nothing thinking it’s just the post WM crowd being like that. When I think there’s a huge percentage of fans that want Vince to retire. I wouldn’t care if he still had some sort of role with the business side of things but to be in charge of what we see on TV at 73 years old is not good. The sad thing though is I don’t see HHH being that better. I feel a lot of fans will be disappointed when he’s in charge thinking a lot will change but I don’t see it, especially with Stephanie being in charge with him. As much as some people might think otherwise (and it's easy to think otherwise when one spends a lot of time on wrestling boards/sites, and following wrestling personalities on social media), I get the impression that a lot of the people who go to any given filming of RAW or SDL just aren't as obsessive about the product and the personnel (both talent and management) as we internalize it as from what we see of obsessive internet types.

Vince is a legend. That’s why.
Plus a lot of those people cheering probably weren’t expecting him to show up. So you bet your ass I’m marking out for a surprise Vince showing.

Which is why it's weird that they cheer him. That poster didn't phrase it right. It's because he's VINCENT KENNEDY MCMAHON! Still not quite right: He's VINCENT KENNEDY MCMAHON, DAMNIT!

Nostalgia and whenever he shows up, its supposed to be because there's something important going down.

Because Vince is basically a meme, and there isn't anything that the masses gobble up faster than memes.

Most Vince appearances now are basically greatest hits packages. You get the strut, the catchphrases, the gulp. It's just entertainment.

And for those of us that don't see him as entertainment, it's been years of cringe.
I'm glad the OP asked this, I've been wondering it for years, esp after the whole "Fire Roman" thing got the "you fans are crazy tonight" middle finger.

He's an icon in wrestling despite being a vile human. Pretty hard not to have a "holy crap i'm seeing one of the biggest personalities in wrestling history" -style pop if he shows up, regardless of how you might feel about him personally.

Because no matter what you currently think of Vince McMahon the man, Mr. McMahon the character is still one of the best characters the WWE has ever had. People are reacting to that character; the music, the strut, the exaggerated gestures, the voice and his overall importance. No amount of dumb, or out of date backstage decisions can ruin that character. As long as he can still deliver a good promo and will be entertaining (and Vince is nothing if not entertaining), people will cheer.

you ever see Howard's Stern's private parts, when they go over his ratings and the station's execs sya that his biggest fans tune in to hear "What he will say next." and then say that his haters tune in because? "they want to hear "What he will say next." I imagine its a similar kind of thing.

Said it before, I hate Vince McMahon, but I also love him, and when he dies, I will weep. Exactly that. I just about have more mixed feelings over Vince than I do some of my relatives, and I've never even met the man haha.

If I’m at a live show and “No Chance” plays I’m going to lose my shit. It’s f***ing Vince McMahon, are you serious?

Out of respect. Like, if any of us met Vince, we'd at least shake his hand.

Remember how weird it was to see Vince's old man head on his Greek God-like body when he first busted out the tank top? Was Lawler losing his mind about it? Am I remembering correctly?
