Starrcade 1997. Sting should have beaten Hogan clean as a sheet, and the nWo should have disbanded the following night on Nitro. Not only did Sting win via bullshit shenanigans, but he got his ass kicked for like 85% of the match. I don't blame Hogan and Bischoff entirely, because Sting should have fought that shit tooth and nail. 15 months of build flushed down the toilet, along with a shitload of money. Honestly, I'll always be convinced that Bischoff didn't kill the nWo after Starrcade because he had no idea what to do next. He had his one grand idea, rode it out to a natural conclusion, then panicked. Instead of going out with a big angle, it just limped along and died a feeble, gradual death. Killing it here would have prevented an nWo featuring the likes of Stevie Ray, Horace, Crush, Brutus Beefcake, and goddamn Disco Inferno. I think he panicked, like many promoters, and was scared of losing revenue if the NWO was defeated. Was scared that the revenue stream would stop so he kept them alive as long as he could. Sadly, he had more than enough talent to offset that loss.

I can't choose between the Fingerpoke of Doom and Hogan vs Sting at Starrcade.
The Fingerpoke was the death knell but it all starts at Starrcade. They destroyed over a year of build. They screwed up the supposed fast count, there didnt need to be any screwy finish anyway, Bret Hart didn't need to be there at all, just an astounding mess.

Going with Flair/Savage and Sid/Hogan at Wrestlemania, instead of Hogan/Flair.

Starrcade 97
Like someone already said this was the night to end WWF for good...and all they had to do was have Sting beat Hogan cleanly.
But nope they left life in that body and it was all downhill.

It’s more like a top 5 than the single worst, but HHH going over Booker in the fashion he did at WM was the summation of a lot of really uncomfortable aspects of the industry, in particular ego and racism.

The blood stoppage finish at Great American Bash '88. It lead to increased gate for the return matches in the short term but it also set up Luger as a choker and introduced the NWA on ppv as a place where the hero doesn't get his hand raised in the end.

For me, the worst decision is Goldberg turning heel at Great American Bash 2000. He was the last hero and something resembling excitement for WCW. Top it off with the "there's nothing Vince McMahon can do about it" promo. Wow. Vince didn't have to do anything because they were just hurting themselves.

Honestly, Nick Gulas trying to push his son as a main eventer has to be one of the worst.
George Gulas set in motion one of the biggest coups in wrestling history, by virtue of just being a really dopey guy who fan's didn't think could break an egg.

Sting vs Hogan - Starrcade 1997. All Hogan had to do was lose clean and make Sting look strong, and that would probably have been the end of WWE. How, though? Where do they go from there? The match was disappointing but Sting still got a big pop when he won. And WCW had a lot of good stuff going on in 98, including the rise of Goldberg and the nWo splitting.

Immediate thought was "Fingerpoke of Doom", but Gagne keeping the belt off of Hogan didn't just kill one national company, it fueled the engine that let the WWF/E take over the wrestling world. AWA were going to get a Saturday night show on CBS before Hogan left, once he left, so he left so did that deal. I'd say Jarrett beating Raven on the Canada house show before they went live on Spike TV.

Hogan realizes the error of his ways and joins Bret Hart to fight the outsiders. Sting defends a few “monsters” while Goldburg keeps winning. Hogan wins belt off of Sting. Goldburg defeats Hogan on a PPV Starry bringing Jericho, Benoit, Raven and Eddie in the main event scene. After dropping belt to Hogan Sting, who now has nothing to fight for, feuds with Raven who wants to “save” him

The ending of WrestleMania 9. I feel that Hogan winning the WWF Title set the company back 4 or 5 years.

i have two.
Making Shawn Michaels a main eventer and pairing him with Diesel. That started the disastrous new generation era that almost bankrupted the wwf, it took him years to recover and Vince had to use his own money to cover the company’s losses.
Antonio Inoki putting the New Japan top talent in mma fights. Pro Wrestling is a fake sport and when you put your fake wrestlers against real fighters it shows. That decision killed Japanese wrestling for a decade until Hiroshi Tanahashi saved it.

Got to agree with the fingerpoke of doom. If any one thing defines WCW it would be that. The thing I struggle with most is trying to figure out what possible benefit they thought would come from it??? Most bad booking decisions can at least somewhat be argued for if there is a bigger picture (regardless of whether we agree with it).

As far as bad decision making that badly affected business, you can pick either of these two from the WWF in 2001. First, turning Steve Austin heel. Secondly, botching the angle that could have offset that original mistake - the Invasion.
The Austin turn effectively killed-off the late 90s WWF boom once and for all, and the Invasion angle probably left millions of dollars on the table.
Sting not getting a clean win over Hogan was terrible from a creative standpoint but I don't think it made any real impact business-wise. And I really don't see how it would have "finished off" the WWF. The combination of Austin 3:16 and bringing in Mike Tyson was too big a fire to be extinguished by one match finish in WCW.

It’s more like a top 5 than the single worst, but HHH going over Booker in the fashion he did at WM was the summation of a lot of really uncomfortable aspects of the industry, in particular ego and racism. Yep. I know the story about Booker thinking about retiring, but still, you don't have Triple H talk all that shit, inject race, and then win. Even if Booker held it for a week, so what? Title lengths weren't important then, and I'm sure he would have stuck around if he was winning. But having the racist win is just mind blowing.

I'll go with an underrated one that involves Lesnar and plays into the current day: Lesnar beating Rob Van Dam at KOTR 2002. At the time it really hurt RVD's momentum in order to push a green rookie, and Lesnar at the time ended up being a flash in the pan that left 2 years later. And now of course we still have this Lesnar trash to deal with and it sucks.

Not to mention, okay, sure, the plan was for Triple H to have this long title reign for Goldberg to end it. But Goldberg didn't even actually end the thing until five months later anyway - there was plenty of time to let Booker hold the belt for a month or so then move it back to Triple H. Though really it says it all about how bad the World title's booking was that after being introduced in 2002, Triple H was the only heel to win it and not immediately turn face until Booker in 2006.
