Immediate instinct is the Sandman crucifixion for how thoroughly that bit ECW on the ass, but there's probably worse out there.

Jeff Jarrett beating Raven at the Nashville Asylum on the TNA Weekly PPV on the 30th of April 2003 has to be up there. That match killed the momentum that Raven had.

Financially, Austin turning heel at WM17 has to be the worst idea of the modern era.
It was well executed and Austin was a great heel in 2001, but just at the exact time that WWE had the most eyeballs on them, they basically kicked their biggest fans (and all their casual fans) in the balls by making their hero a sellout.
WWE might as well have literally taken a few year's worth of company profits and lit them ablaze.

Sting vs Hogan - Starrcade 1997.
All Hogan had to do was lose clean and make Sting look strong, and that would probably have been the end of WWE.

Verne Gagne not putting the belt on Hulk Hogan and riding the Hulkamania craze, which forced Hogan to go to WWF and put them on the map.

Jeff Jarrett beating Raven at the Nashville Asylum on the TNA Weekly PPV on the 30th of April 2003 has to be up there. That match killed the momentum that Raven had. Not only killed Ravens momentum but also killed the town. Before Raven’s debut they were drawing maybe 50-70% capacity. By the time the Raven-JJ match cane around they were turning people away and were getting sellouts The next week the arena was less than half full. Not to even mention that they eliminated the “heel section” which was pretty unique and differentiated TNA from other promotions. It was like Jarrett looked around and thought “People are really starting to buy into our product, how can we fix this problem” I often wonder if Jarrett watched “The Producers” and wanted to see if it would work in wrestling

This has to be up there Same night as "Fans, as Hollywood Hogan walks away and you look at this 40,000 plus on hand, if you're even thinking about changing the channel to our competition, fans, do not, because we understand that Mick Foley, who wrestled here one time as Cactus Jack, is going to win their world title. Ha! That's gonna put some butts in the seats, heh."

I think 3 of the biggest have already been mentioned. Sting not winning clean, Verne not strapping the rocket to Hogan and the fingerpoke.
Add Nash beating Goldberg to that.

Fingerpoke is the one that immediately sprung to mind.
Everything about it was bad for WCW. They were in Atlanta and cheated, what, like 40,000 fans out of a Goldberg title match that they would have been hot for?
And if things weren't bad enough for WCW, just compare the confusion of the fans in attendance for Nitro compared to the fans going absolutely nuts for the WWF title match.
The icing on the cake is shooting themselves in the foot and undermining Mick Foley'popularity and causing 600,000 viewers to switch over to Raw.
WWE likes to gloat about beating WCW, but WCW did so much to be self-defeating.
Just like Starrcade 1997, the booking decisions should have been so obvious but they wanted to go and complicate things and confuse the fans.

Batista winning the 2014 Royal Rumble. I honestly feel like WWE has been on a downturn since that moment.

I can't have Hogan in the AWA on such a list. Once Vince and New York came calling, he was gone. In some ways, *not* putting the belt on him probably extended the life of Verne's company.

I fully believe Jarrett winning that King of the Mountain Match in like 2006 was the final straw that killed any chance TNA ever had of being a true alternative to the WWE.
That moment is etched in stone as the pinnacle of "Trying to make JJ a thing in spite of the reality that JJ was never going to be a thing".

Starrcade 1997. Sting should have beaten Hogan clean as a sheet, and the nWo should have disbanded the following night on Nitro. Not only did Sting win via bullshit shenanigans, but he got his ass kicked for like 85% of the match. I don't blame Hogan and Bischoff entirely, because Sting should have fought that shit tooth and nail. 15 months of build flushed down the toilet, along with a shitload of money.
Honestly, I'll always be convinced that Bischoff didn't kill the nWo after Starrcade because he had no idea what to do next. He had his one grand idea, rode it out to a natural conclusion, then panicked. Instead of going out with a big angle, it just limped along and died a feeble, gradual death. Killing it here would have prevented an nWo featuring the likes of Stevie Ray, Horace, Crush, Brutus Beefcake, and goddamn Disco Inferno.

Immediate thought was "Fingerpoke of Doom", but Gagne keeping the belt off of Hogan didn't just kill one national company, it fueled the engine that let the WWF/E take over the wrestling world.

They could have still done the nWo in-fighting and exploding like they did with Hogan's Black and White team on one side and Nash and Hall's Wolfpack on the other and kill it off in a Wargames style match with Nash's team going over and then give Hogan a rest for a few months while he shoots a movie or something before bringing him back. Instead we got what we got.

Lesnar as the champion who won't go away could become a legit answer to this question, if it isn't already. How many people have been turned off the product in the last three years?
