Invader Zim - "Bestest Friend" where Keef falls to his supposed death after getting his eyeballs ripped from his head, getting robotic eyes, seeing everything (a squirrel) as Zim, chases said squirrel up to the top of the next door building, the squirrel attacking him and both falling to the ground below with an explosion happening

The episode of Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy where the Pink Ranger sacrifices her life at the end of the episode.
Yeah I know it was because the actress had to leave the series due to health issues and she did come back at the end because she thankfully got better. But back then it was unheard of for Power Rangers to kill off a character in that manner in a non finale episode.

A surprising amount of 80s cartoons: GI Joe: Sink The Montana and There's No Place Like Springfield Transformers: The Golden Lagoon, Dark Awakening, Webworld, Fight or Flee Bravestarr: The Price (the anti-drug episode) There is also the anti-drug episode DIC run of GI Joe. The villain actually dies at the end which was pretty rare for such cartoons at that time.

There was that one episode of Family Guy where Quagmire just straight up murders his sister's abusive boyfriend. It wasn't a setup to a joke or played for laughs or anything. It was played straight.
Granted, Family Guy (unfortunately) hasn't finished airing yet. But I can't imagine a series finale being that dark for the show. LOST also had a number of episodes with far darker endings than anything that went on in the finale.
American Dad also has some pretty messed up endings. I’ll always remember the one with the killer hot tub (voiced by CeeLo Green; with him actually making an appearance during the episode) killing both Francine and then Stan right as he’s about to save the day. He breathes his final breath, the camera zooms back slowly... Then it cuts to actual CeeLo going “That’s it, they’re dead. Good night!” Funny yes, but incredibly twisted. this was actually originally intended to be the series finale too. they did not expect to be renewed.

There are actually a few other Fresh Prince eps that got dark or serious. The season 5 episode "It's a Wonderful Lie" took a way serious turn once Will found out that Ashley was in a college frat party that she wasn't supposed to be at. Somehow that got way more serious than that other episode about Ashley exploring and learning about sex in season 4 "Stop Will! In the Name of Love" (that one was the famous "that's CHEESE, Ashley" episode). That one managed to stay light-hearted while still talking about an important subject. One that comes to mind is the episode Will got shot. Carlton is so angry he buys a gun. The episode ends with Will taking the bullets out of gun. Pretty f***ed up, too, would be the episode where Carlton and Will get arrested for "stealing" a car. Sure, Phil gets them out and reads the cops the riot act, but you still have Carlton shaken at the end.

Baywatch..the one where Stephanie dies.
Smallville's 100th episode, where Clark gets engaged to Lana, she dies in a car wreck, Clark turns back time to set up ways to prevent her death, but the price paid is his father dies in her place
Classic Doctor Who has a few...Ressurection of the Daleks is a mass kill-a-thon ending in companion Tegan becoming dispirited with her travels in the TARDIS and parts company with The Doctor in a sorrowful moment.

Star Trek TNG the episode where Tasha Yar dies. Probably due to Denise Crosby being fed up with doing this show and wanting out.... Well, come season 3 and Yesterday's Enterprise and guess who returned? Nobody has metioned Dinosaurs' Changing Nature episode yet, it could have been a very very sad final episode if it weren't for the fact that there were some unaired episodes that aired when the show hit syndication

The contrast between Phil (Angry, yet resigned to it), Will (angry at the situation and also Carlton for not seeing what really happened) and Carlton (confused naivety) is absolutely fantastic

Looking back at the series, I don't know if there is room for her character if you want every other character to grow and get fleshed out.

Maybe have security and tactical split up but working together a lot? They were figuring out everyone, and she was far from the least developed person on the show at that point, but she was maybe one piece too many, her leaving and Geordi moving to engineering were the 2 things that made the crew really click into place. Everyone had a role that was very much theirs.

Well, if I remember correctly there was an impending writers' strike that caused a lot of things to get rushed and caused some serious on-set issues (which was made worse by the fact that everyone was probably a little on edge to begin with because they all hated their costumes in season 1 - those uniforms were apparently very hot and their skin-tight nature made everyone self conscious). She was not the only unhappy with how things were being done. She was just the only one to do something about it.

The two episodes of Dallas where JR raped women. Wasn’t that how they introduced his second wife into the show? I remember him getting thrown in jail or something like that. Post dream sequence really killed that show’s momentum.

You could probably name MOST TP episodes that weren't the finale (which was also pretty damned dark too) for this thread While it's true Twin Peaks had some darker episode endings, I always felt this one stood out in no small way and felt it needed mentioning because it's one other people have brought up constantly in conversations about the show when I've spoken to them. I think the way that scene is filmed being so unlike anything else in the show, or really in any show, is a big reason why it burns itself into the minds of the Twin Peaks viewers. {Spoiler}{Spoiler}In part because everyone I've ever shown the show to loving Leland and being mortified by the reveal. I've known some people that had to straight up quit the show because of the scene with Leland and Maggy and the implications it puts on Laura and Leland hitting too close to home for them. That scene where he kills Maddie was so chilling and disturbing. Another one that actually gave me nightmares the first time I saw it was the final scene of the season 2 premiere. The flashback sequence of Ronnette’s dream with Bob killing Laura Palmer.

The season five finale of The Shield was absolutely heartbreaking. Shane drops a grenade in Lem’s lap because he thinks that he’s going to rat on the Strike Team. Vic was almost about to get Lem out of town and into Mexico. I remember the reactions of the other cops when they found Lem, a mixture of shock, grief, and disbelief. Lem was the only one in the Strike Team that was actually still a good guy.

Dallas kinda lost steam for me after Pam was written off the show. The last few years of Dallas are a real blur.

I love this thread. It has made me track down so many episodes of shows that I had no idea existed. A lot of times, darker episodes of shows aren't really aired in syndication.
