The M*A*S*H episode Dreams. Just bleak throughout. Brilliantly shot and acted.

Hasbro: "Hey kids, we know Optimus Prime dying in the movie upset you, but we'll make it up to you, we promise!" Also Hasbro: I love that even people who adore Optimus Prime sometimes like taking the piss about how often he dies in the franchise, which makes it difficult for some of them to take it seriously anymore. This, though, definitely got in early enough to be f***ed up.

The movie was released in August '86, Prime was killed in an issue of the US comic book in September, and this episode was first broadcast October 1st. It was a tough three months to be an Optimus Prime fan.

When I was a kid I was watching cartoons and "GI Joe" was on. Well, at the end of the episode the bad guy throws this snake and hits this guy right through his heart and kills him! I had never seen anything that graphic in a cartoon before so it terrified me and I never watched that show again.
I looked it up years later and apparently that guy who got hit was named "Duke" and they retconn it so he doesn't actually die. But christ was that a traumatic and dark way to end a kids cartoon episode and for me to see like that unprepared as a 4 or 5 year old kid.

They retconned it before release due to the controversy of Optimus Prime dying in the Transformers movie (first of many, as we discuss above). No there's no version where they keep the scene unmolested by the "coma" line and later, "we heard Duke's going to be okay!" Not that I know of. AFAIK it was like this when the movie (briefly) hit theaters. I guess you could mute the TV when these lines appear if you want the intended effect. And if you only recognize the Sunbow version of G.I. Joe, this WAS the last episode technically.

When shown on TV the movie was often edited into episodes rather than shown in full. So if he caught that episode and not the others he wouldn’t have seen the end where it is said Duke is going to be alright.

It might have been there(but yeah that basically was the end iirc, so if it was after that then no I didn't see where they said he was alive). But even as a kid I could tell just from the visuals that he had been brutally murdered and probably wasn't paying any attention to the dialogue, just horrified at what i'd seen.

I don't remember if it was the last scene, but, there's an episode of the Golden Girls, where Rose says "what happens when there's only one of us left?"
They're all sitting, in the order in which each girl died.
Estelle Getty Bea Arthur Rue McClanahan Betty White (hasn't passed, but, the irony would still be there)

That episode of Buffy where she’s in an insane asylum and the ending insinuates that this is the “real” Buffy and everything else has been her hallucinations.
