I’ve been watching Tales from the Darkside lately and this show is chalk full of them. I guess that’s not that surprising given the show title, but some are surprising given the content.
There’s one episode called Ursa Minor. It’s your typical evil doll story with the doll in this case being a teddy bear. It ends with the mom and her son facing down the teddy bear. The mom stabs the stuffing out of it, but right after she does this a real bear starts tearing through the walls of the house and is super pissed off. That bear is definitely going to kill someone! The mom tries to comfort her son as the bear starts to claw into the room then the show abruptly ends.
The very next episode is one called Effect and Cause about a woman who can change her surroundings until things start to get out of control. Early in the episode there is what comes off as a throw away moment that whenever the doorbell rings it ignites a little spark in the bell above the door. The ending comes when things start disappearing rapidly from her house. She ends up falling down the stairs and somehow caused the gas stove to turn on. Police come to investigate as she is yelling about her predicament. She yells, “Not the doorbell” as the police are just about to ring it and force the house to blow up. Then the credits hit.

All in the Family - "Archie Gets Branded" with a Jewish radical activist who gets blown up in a car bomb. The episode ends right on that, with Archie saying "That's Paul. they blew him up in his car."

"The One That Got Away," The Raccoons. A miser worse than Cyril Sneer in his heyday tricks the Pigs into dumping toxic chemicals into a pond that was the gang's swimming/fishing hole back in the day. Even Cyril is impacted by the destruction of his childhood hangout. Said miser is arrested, but it ends with the younger characters like Bentley lamenting that THEY'LL never get to enjoy the pond. It ends with a montage with the younger versions of the characters and sad music.
What's worse is, when The Raccoons was reran on The Disney Channel, they sometimes ended the series on THIS episode. At least one other episode came after it, so it wasn't the series finale per se. But no, this would be the last new episode TDC aired before they'd go back to 1985/the specials from 1980-84.

I’ll just copy and paste my post from a few weeks ago....
An episode of One Foot in the Grave called Who Will Buy?
Margaret delivers flowers to the wrong address in a rough area and it’s a sweet blind old man who lives alone. He asks her to read out some letters that were sent to him by his Children and grandchildren in Australia. The letters are actually junk leaflets but Margaret doesn’t want to hurt his feelings so she tells a white lie and makes up a letter and tells it to him. Later in the episode you find out the old man’s house was broken into and he was murdered. He had drawn his life savings from the bank to buy brand new locks for his house but upon hearing the “letter” from his grandkids, he spent that money on toys that he was going to send them for Christmas.

The ending to Earthshock in Classic Who has to be up there: {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW}
Granted Adric was so annoying that probably 30% of the audience considered it a happy ending, but it stands out as one one of the few Doctor Who stories in the classic era to kill a companion, and the only story to kill one of long running significance.

Would Fresh Prince's "how come he don't want me?" ending fit the bill here? It's not dark dark but definitely grim (especially to a kid/Kids not used to parents abandoning their children whatsoever)....

Thomas The Tank Engine
Henry is sad and he is hiding in a tunnel, they decide to build a brick wall to keep him in as punishment, Gordon being a dick tells him "serves you right"
Ringo tops it off by saying "I think he deserves his punishment don't you?"

It's not dark dark but definitely grim (especially to a kid/Kids not used to parents abandoning their children whatsoever).... There are actually a few other Fresh Prince eps that got dark or serious. The season 5 episode "It's a Wonderful Lie" took a way serious turn once Will found out that Ashley was in a college frat party that she wasn't supposed to be at. Somehow that got way more serious than that other episode about Ashley exploring and learning about sex in season 4 "Stop Will! In the Name of Love" (that one was the famous "that's CHEESE, Ashley" episode). That one managed to stay light-hearted while still talking about an important subject.

One that comes to mind is the episode Will got shot. Carlton is so angry he buys a gun. The episode ends with Will taking the bullets out of gun.

There was that one episode of Family Guy where Quagmire just straight up murders his sister's abusive boyfriend. It wasn't a setup to a joke or played for laughs or anything. It was played straight.
Granted, Family Guy (unfortunately) hasn't finished airing yet. But I can't imagine a series finale being that dark for the show.
LOST also had a number of episodes with far darker endings than anything that went on in the finale.

I'm sure there are others from this series that could fit the bill too, but...
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Episode, "The Valiant".
While it would be a realistic thing to happen, a crew of cadets who try to do more than ordered to become heroes, end up all dying and the ship destroyed (save for one cadet and the two series regulars in Jake Sisko and Nog).

American Dad also has some pretty messed up endings. I’ll always remember the one with the killer hot tub (voiced by CeeLo Green; with him actually making an appearance during the episode) killing both Francine and then Stan right as he’s about to save the day. He breathes his final breath, the camera zooms back slowly... Then it cuts to actual CeeLo going “That’s it, they’re dead. Good night!” Funny yes, but incredibly twisted.
