Unfortunately it took his death, but George Michael. Before his death, he was seen as just a washed up guy with a pretty sleazy, substance filled life. Then once he died, all the stories about the level of charity work he did both financially and in person under condition it was kept secret came out. The guy was an incredibly generous human being. I knew he'd be respected one day. I had Faith. In fact, I'm going to celebrate him by doing the Jitterbug. You have the Freedom to celebrate however you want. This post was Flawless and Amazing. I Want Your Sex?

Was he a Father Figure to a lot of people then?
Johnny Depp is a curious one. His rep took a major hit around the time Amber Heard divorced him and accused him of abuse, but then it turned out that it was BS and the he was the one abused instead. But I dunno that he really did the 180 back again, since the whole thing was a trashy mess.
Are we including someone like OJ in this?

Kobe Bryant had a couple drastic shifts. For obvious reasons.
Michael Jackson’s another case like that.
Brittany Spears, Russel Brand, Snoop Dogg, Leonardo DiCaprio. Honestly it’s hard to narrow it down, especially with the acceleration of celebrity pop culture and the Internet. You’re currently seeing shifts with celebs like Kanye (again) and Chrissy Teigen.
A fairly innocuous one to pair up with OPs point is Hayden Christensen. Partly cause if that same weird, meme appeal the prequel’s have produced and probably partly because Hayden seems harmless and has stayed out of the spotlight.

Ashton Kutcher Mostly seen as a pretty boy airhead actor to being a philanthropic respected voice in the effort to stop human trafficking. And if you are from Iowa he's now the guy that talked the Governor into throwing millions at some Utah Tech Bro Buddies for a borderline corona scam. Interesting. I’ll reserve judgement until I read more about it but thanks for bringing it to the conversation

Jim Carrey imo.
Went from the funny guy in all those movies to being... weird for lack of a better word.
Also a bit before my time, but wasn't Michael Keaton just seen as a comedy actor in the 80s? Now it's hard not to think of the brooding dark Batman when you hear his name.
Kanye West has done more than a 180. That dudes constantly spinning around in terms of his image. I still love the guy's music tho.

Always reminds me of Robin Williams too who had his own surge in fame, exposed demons, and for the years leading up to his death was actually mocked quite a bit and degraded as being washed up. Post-death it was a surge of nostalgic love.

Ellen Degeneres seems to be going through this right now. I see lots of tabloid articles, not sure which had merit and which didn't. I know some people complain about her mentioning (banned FAN topics) more, but YMMV. I hope I am not stereotyping, but this DEFINITELY happened with Rosie. Not that I was ever a fan, but near the end of her talk show was when her family-friendly facade was lifted, between things she did and what we found out behind the scenes.

Essentially a lot of her staffers have said that when the cameras aren't rolling she's a complete asshole. I believe there was also some shenanigans around paying crew members when corona shut down production, with her making a big show of taking care of them while really only continuing to pay the skeleton crew necessary to continue shows at her home.

In relation to another thread-Kayne Different kinds of insane, but still insane. At one time, seen as the man who was classing up hip hop. Now, just a chapter in a psychology class.

I guess Johnny Depp was always the talented weirdo, but this trial with he and Amber Heard is all kinds of bizarre (on both sides).
Includes accusations of everything from death threats to poo in the bed.
Oh, he somehow lost 600m in 'Pirates' money. I don't even think Brewster's Millions could lose that much.

It's a shame, I just wish he could get help but being surrounded by enablers probably prevents that.

The Keanu one always kills me. I have soft spots for him, RDJ and Johnny Depp and always have, but with the latter two, I understand people can judge about things I personally believe they shouldn't. Poor Keanu, as far as I know, doesn't even have any demons for people to judge. What did he ever do except make movies and be awesome? Thank goodness now people seem to get that he's basically the best.

Post-death it was a surge of nostalgic love. I think at least some of it has to do with the stories that came out after the fact of him knowing that a lot of the movies he made in his later career were garbage, but he needed to keep working. With that said, within his last few years he had some of his absolute best dramatic acting in Insomnia and World's Greatest Dad, and a pretty plum franchise role in Happy Feet. If he could have held on a couple more years I bet the MCU or Quentin Tarantino would've wanted him for something.

It’s sucks cause there’s the enablers and detractors hurling insults and shame on the opposite end. The middle-point, being supportive while honest Is hard to find for anyone I think really.

While I always thought he was a good, kind hearted bloke (I heard about some of his charity and random acts of kindness before he died, though it was probably just a fraction of what he did), some of his actions in his latter years worried me. He was this amazingly talented and respected singer from the mid 80s onward, but a decade or so later he was a mess and a (literal) car crash. It was as if something inside him flipped and he didn’t care about his image or reputation. This isn’t about his sexuality I should add, but his odd choice of single releases, drinking and driving, the prison sentence. Thankfully he redeemed himself before his passing, but for a few years his image took a huge battering - and all due to his own actions.

George never emotionally recovered from the death of his first lover from cancer, and then he lost his mother.

Another person I think is unique is Dave Chappelle. He had his peak with the Chappelle Show, was seen as “crazy” because he canceled the third season of the show during its production and (apparently)checked into a mental hospital in South Africa. Later it was revealed that he was just stressed out and canceled his show because he didn’t like how white people were using his jokes to demean black people, making him a hero that turned down millions for the sake of his morals. BUT THEN he came back into the public eye and got in trouble for trans jokes in his first special (in the second special I feel he saved some face) and by his third special was talking about cancel culture and was mad at people for being offended by his jokes, essentially burning away at his hero status and looking like a giant hypocrite. The sad part is that he threw away a redemption story to spite his critics and then doubled-down on it with his support of Kanye West. I get it. He's getting older. He doesn't understand the current mindset that society is in. Unlike him, I can evolve.
