Halloween is what comes to mind when I read the thread title. A lot of horror fans hype it up, but didn't come close to the hype for me. Not a bad film, but felt more okay to me.

I didn't see Top Gun as a kid either, and we decided to watch it just a couple years ago. Found the main character unlikable and the plot more annoying than anything else. Also, people rave about the soundtrack, but there's only, like, 2 songs repeated over and over again: "Danger Zone" and "Take My Breath Away". Fine songs, but I don't need to hear them constantly for 90 minutes. Pretty much the same with me. Everybody I knew saw Top Gun. I never saw it until maybe 2 years ago. Sat there going OK why the hell was this so loved. Cruise was his normal boring self. Add me to this category. Whereas I like Cruise, everything in this movie felt by the numbers and the flight scenes weren't all that spectacular.

The Hangover It was just another blackout drunk comedy for me. Didn't even bother with the sequels. If you saw the Hangover, you saw the Hangover 2. It takes place in Thailand, so I’m assuming you already know what the big joke is.

I've never disagreed with so many posts in one thread. This is a great - and enraging- read. You all state your positions very well even if I don't agree

The Exorcist is a fine movie but beyond a few shocking moments of a 12 year old girl pantomiming a few filthy things it is not as remarkable as people say.

Coming to something late, when you've already seen other works that took inspiration and/or straight up ripped off parts of it, can definitely be a major drawback.
It's pretty embarrassing that the only film I've legitimately fallen asleep while watching is, of all things, Citizen Kane. And it was only 2 in the afternoon. Never happened before or since for any other film.

Ended up giving up in the middle of The Two Towers.

A History of Violence. It's like the Ambrose vs. Lesnar of movies for me.

Didn't help that a lot of later fantasy books inspired by Tolkien are written by people who know how to actually pace a story without being sidetracked.

there is probably a few but When Harry Met Sally comes to mind
if it's a romantic comedy (or even drama) and you are not invested in them getting together then it fails for you, it's a shame for me because Rob Reiner had a strong run before this (Spinal Tap, The Sure Thing, Stand By Me, The Princess Bride) and even followed it up with Misery

Thought of two more.
This is Spinal Tap,didn't see it until 2000. By then I had had it quoted so much that all the funny lines I had heard already 100 times.
Monty Python and the holy grail-Didn't see this until 98 or so. Again had had it quoted so much that watching it I never laughed. Oddly I love the other Python films.

The Exorcist is a fine movie but beyond a few shocking moments of a 12 year old girl pantomiming a few filthy things it is not as remarkable as people say. I've still somehow never seen the Exorcist. I've seen the Exorcist 2 and 3, but not the original. Similarly to your reaction to the Exorcist was my reaction to Rosemary's Baby. I had heard so much about it over the years, how scary it was, and how shocking yadda yadda. I finally get around to watching it, even watching it during October with the lights turned down... And it was so dull, its beats having been presumably ripped off so many times that everything was predictable. It also didn't help that the characters seemed like aliens because of how they reacted to things - I presume their reactions were more in keeping with the time the film was made and I found it odd how poor my reaction to it was because I normally find such "windows into a time" fascinating, but this movie just made you want to pull your hair out.

Star Wars. I've only ever seen the original and that was once. I love space, I love science, and I just don't get it with this movie or the franchise.

As Good As It Gets, the Jack Nicholson romantic comedy. Everybody raved about it and his performance, but I spent the whole film waiting for something to actually happen. It didn’t help that the people I saw it with thought it was incredible.
Drive is another; this sleeper hit featuring Ryan Gosling as a driver for a criminal gang got huge acclaim, but it did nothing for me. My partner’s son said it wasn’t any good, but as his taste in films isn’t the best example I thought I’d give it s go. God, it was dull. Drive? More like drivel.

Mean Girls was a perfectly fine movie. I don't particularly understand the reverence with which it seems to be held in by many people of my generation.

Add me to that list, well I doubt I'm in the same generation. I had never seen it. Was told I had to see it and how it was one of the funniest movies. So one weekend while digging thru VHS at a thrift store I got a copy for a quarter. Watched it and it was decent. But nothing special.

Honestly, I'm not far off. The first movie is only ok. I think the second movie was the best. If it weren't for the fact that I was watching them all in my thirties (late twenties maybe) and obviously knew people loved them, I don't know if the first film would convince me to watch any more

Coming to something late, when you've already seen other works that took inspiration and/or straight up ripped off parts of it, can definitely be a major drawback. That can be true yeah. A few exceptions: - The Duck Soup mirror routine. Aped ad nauseam but the original is still amazing the first time you see it. - Almost any original Twilight Zone twist. You'll probably see them coming because they've been ripped off a thousand times but they're still great

Borat. Everyone I know quoted the f*** out of it to the point of obnoxiousness. I saw it and thought it was nonsense, and not in a good way.
"Well, you must not get the joke then!" Nope. I get it and think it still sucks
