I'm starting to think JR has more "especially bad" nights than not.

Andre the Treadmill would be a pretty good name. Ghost of The Fink: “From the border town of Tijuana, Mexico. Please welcome, ANDRE.....THE TREADMILL”

My issue with the KKK/Murdoch comparisons is just that he goes to that well constantly. I know Ross has a ton of knowledge to call back on, but his reference pool keeps hitting on these guys with such consistency and repetition that it stands out. It's not even the deepest of his commentary sins, esepcially not last night when he was as off as he was, but it's impossible to overlook that he keeps shouting these guys out and not any of a number of other people he'd have worked with or known. An older person repeating the same references over and over isn’t shocking, nor would I say it’s indicative of him trying to shoehorn in un-PC references. The solution if it’s really an issue is probably as simple as Khan telling him to not reference those wrestlers anymore.

I'm not implying the latter, and my complaint about the former isn't repetition, it's more that he's repeating some really bad ones and not any of a million other people he's had a history of namedropping. Unintentional as it is, that's still real bad.

I enjoyed hearing him at first since it had been so long since he’d been allowed a proper run at commentary on TV and he did have some good performances and bad performances but lately it has been beyond rough listening to him
He either sounds really bored or when he does put effort in, it comes across as really forced and it is a noticeable detraction from the product
He’s so far behind in terms of Excalibur and Tony, that it’s a shame to watch/listen to
I would rather he retire soon so that we can talk about great he was rather than how poor he is now. I understand his reasons but it’s kind of selfish now to keep going

Ross has been getting worse by the show, and whether it's a combination of age, stodginess, or something else, it's pretty evident that he's becoming a liability. Also... and I feel kinda guilty making this, but this sums up what he's become:

I didn’t know any of those dudes until ppl in here brought it up. It just becomes JRs white noise when he name drops these old wrestlers I never heard of. Yeah, and it can’t be emphasized enough that Karl Kox is the literal inventor of the brain buster. JR is just an out of touch old man who doesn’t realize that “KKK” is not a cool gimmick to reference in 2021, but I don’t think he has some hidden agenda. He was bah gawding about Butch Reed when Hobbs hit a shoulder block a few weeks ago, too. I’d be interested in knowing when exactly the KKK was an ok thing to reference on a wrestling show. This “oh he’s just out of touch” argument doesn’t wash. They existed before JR was born and they’ve always had one purpose.

I never even knew that "Killer Karl Kox" was intentionally a KKK thing until I saw his name typed out. I always assumed it was spelled Carl Cox. I've never heard of Karl Kox being considered a blatant racist, much less a member of the KKK (unlike Dick Murdoch who almost certainly was).

He’s not referencing the KKK, he’s referencing Karl Kox, a 1960s heel whose ring name was possibly meant to evoke the KKK. He’s very, very, very, very, very, very, very clearly referencing the guy because he’s the innovator of the brainbuster, and Jungle Boy keeps doing a brainbuster. It’s a bad reference and some of the criticism is warranted. But the guy is not, like, glorifying the Ku Klux Klan. This is getting absurd.

JR is frustrating, undoubtedly.
He's showing his age, and we all reach that point where we can still occasionally be as good as we once were but with each year time takes a toll.
When he's on point and he's interested, he's still the best when it comes to big emotional calls. I'll even let the Andrade thing pass... the guy's a redneck from Oklahoma who's in his 60's, give him at least a week or two. A lot of it I just can't let slide, though.

Like, I'm not joking, he looked up to Kox a lot and emulated him.

Think maybe he was grouchy because he couldn't eat any of Dr. Britt's cheeseburgers.

Maybe it has something to do with Jungle Boy JACK PERRY.

Maybe it has something to do with Jungle Boy JACK PERRY. That's actually one thing I'll defend JR on - it makes total sense for AEW to want to call out that name. I get that the actual performer wants to be called Jungle Boy, but he's got a famous name. Use it.

I listened to JR talk about the Harley Race high knee for what felt like decades with HHH. The guy clearly gets one older name in mind for certain moves and that's the well he goes to over and over again. Kox is clearly his go to for the brainbuster. Arn Anderson is that guy for the spinebuster. It's just a reference he throws out.
My thought is that JR has been in the business so long that he knows unsavory things about pretty much every superstar past and present. He sees guys like Jake Roberts or Tully, confirmed drug abusers get glorified week after week on Dynamite. Stone Cold Steve Austin has a record of abusing his ex-wife yet every wrestling company in the world would hire him tomorrow if he was going to wrestle another match, and all of you on here would watch it.
The point isn't that it's ok to glorify someone like Karl Kox, assuming he actually was a KKK guy and it wasn't just a gimmick that everyone here believes was true, but it's hypocritical if you're going to turn around and cheer for a guy like Austin or Darby after they've been accused of making poor choices. A lot of professional wrestlers and celebs in general have done things that they shouldn't have been able to come back from but they have. I'm not going to condemn JR for throwing out a reference that is applicable because of something a guy may have been involved with in 1960.
In general JR isn't what he used to be but he still brings some presence to a relatively new program. He'll be gone in a year and have handed the reigns to Excalibur.

I do not look forward to the day Ross retires from commentary. It would be an equivalent to having 80's movies taken away.

I’m not sure what he adds to the product on commentary that, say, Caprice Coleman couldn’t add at a better rate.
