Not to go off the current topic but JR seems more motivated working off with an antagonistic commentator whether it was Lawler or Heyman who genuinely knew how to wind him up. Glimpses of the old JR came through at DON whenever Don Callis was at the desk. It was a change of pace as all 3 announcers hating on Callis. My favourite interaction between the two of the night was so simple but made me burst out laughing:
(Karl Anderson walks out to interfere during the YBs match)
DC: "Karl Anderson has seen enough!" JR: "Karl Anderson has seen enough, GIVE ME A BREAK!!"
However, I agree that he doesn't have a place on the announcer team anymore. I'm not saying he doesn't have the passion anymore, it's just he physically showcase that passion on a weekly basis without it coming across as insincere. Tony has more or less taken the mantle of the legendary announcing figure as he's either actively involved with interviews, announcements, post show events and more. Also, being the voice of WCW on TNT helps as well.
I don't think they will let JR go intentionally when his contract expires. I can see them offering a more backstage position as a consultant and remain a talking head for promos or sit down interviews.

The problem is that JR, especially the 70-year-old version, commentates in tropes. One of his tropes right now is “Karl Kox = brainbuster.” So any time he sees a brainbuster, he’s gonna make that reference. It’s just that this one is way more problematic than “bah gawd that man as a family” or “bah gawd it’s a slobberknocker.” Yeah I dont think he realizes what he's saying about Killer Karl Kox. He's just known as the brain buster inventor. I dodnt know about his KKK affiliation until today I think the only corroborated “KKK affiliation” is that he literally made his ring name KKK. But he was a heel to a level that he would start riots and stuff with his presence back in the 60s. I’ve never actually seen any corroboration or heard any stories that the man himself was racist. In fact, he worked and was friends with Thunderbolt Patterson. Ernie Ladd apparently once said “ He had the greatest gimmick ever. KKK — he didn’t have to say a word.” So, yeah, it’s probably innocuous on JR’s part. But, I mean, the guy’s name is LITERALLY KKK, so it’s not a good reference to make in 2021. And Murdoch actually is a corroborated racist KKK member, so that’s a different issue entirely.

I remember in Jericho’s book he talks about Dick being legit in the KKK and shooting guns out the window of the car going town to town Dick also thought it was a good idea for a rib to invite Tony Atlas to a “party” that was actually a KKK rally

I honestly think he doesn't think about someone's personal life when he is comparing them or their wrestling moves to today's wrestlers and their moves. Yeah he could be more aware when he name drops but I don't think he is intentionally doing any harm. Listen, I'm SUPER FORGIVING about a lot of things. But he brings up Kox ALOT. Like at least 5 or 6 times. More than Bill Watts, or Ernie Ladd, or Mr. Wrestling II, or Magnum TA, or Eddie Gilbert, or any of the other greats he both called and refed. But he keeps bringing up Kox. I don't want to project, I certainly don't like to think ill, but I do think he's doing it on purpose because he doesn't like how PC things have gotten. Maybe I'm wrong, but just watch how he will bring him up again. I hope I'm wrong. I'll happily be wrong. I try to be as positive as I can, but I really do think he's doing it on purpose. I watched him for YEARS on NWA, Mid-South and WCW. He NEVER brought up Kox, and now every fourth show in 2021 he's bringing him up? And Dick Murdoch? He hates how PC things have gotten? LOL ok.

Kox is, uh, kind of easy to figure out once you see the name. Yeah but who is actively even thinking about that or searching him up was my thinking? It's the most in passing comments ever and he's not dwelling on it That being said I said this also in the live thread: JUST SAY "KARL KOX" MAN IT'S THAT SIMPLE. I didn’t know any of those dudes until ppl in here brought it up. It just becomes JRs white noise when he name drops these old wrestlers I never heard of.

Yeah, and it can’t be emphasized enough that Karl Kox is the literal inventor of the brain buster. JR is just an out of touch old man who doesn’t realize that “KKK” is not a cool gimmick to reference in 2021, but I don’t think he has some hidden agenda. He was bah gawding about Butch Reed when Hobbs hit a shoulder block a few weeks ago, too.

I’m not criticizing JR with that comment. More just pointing out that he always draws comparisons to wrestlers of yesteryear when people do certain moves. It’s just unfortunate who the brainbuster is associated with, in his mind. I absolutely do not think it’s anything other than JR being a bit out of touch, though.

I think JR has been fine. Not as good as his prime, not as bad as his NJPW work, but he’s been fine with glimpses of prime JR. Not sure about the outrage over namedropping old wrestlers with checkered pasts that 99% of the audience has no idea about.

They're also in a weird spot with him because it seems like everyone backstage genuinely likes him. But on nights like this he sucks at his job hard. So was Dione one of their social media coordinators and they let him go a couple of months ago... I honestly think he doesn't think about someone's personal life when he is comparing them or their wrestling moves to today's wrestlers and their moves. Yeah he could be more aware when he name drops but I don't think he is intentionally doing any harm. This is where I'm at I said it in the live thread but what casual fans are going to know about Dick Murdoch or Killer Karl Kox and their pasts? The smarky corners of the internet might know, but it's not like he's actively out there saying racist shit he's comparing wrestling moves and matches to people of the past. Those people unfortunately had bad personal lives or ties. But I can't imagine JR's doing it in a way to PUSH those beliefs whatsoever. True, if he compared to guys like the Ultimate Warrior or Hogan then yes the casual would understand it more and also feel offended if they knew about their past. Shanna, Kong are buddies with the EVP and they got fired, Hebner also got fired despite being "Earl Hebner", they will let him go once his deal is up. Shanna was a bully, and didn't get over, and lives in France. Earl Hebner and Amazing Kong only worked in 2019, and were gone for a year and a half before letting their contracts expire. Jim Ross is there everyday. He's interviewed by big publications. He's a huge part of everything. It's going to be SUPER HARD to stop using him. It could even be messy. Thats why they hired Mark Henry imo, he will be the one who will be the huge part of everything aspect. Not to go off the current topic but JR seems more motivated working off with an antagonistic commentator whether it was Lawler or Heyman who genuinely knew how to wind him up. Callis was great last night but when he was on Impact in his last year as an announcer he was bad, like he sounded bored like current JR with the different is that Callis tried to make some dumb joke and Matthews no sold it.

And Murdoch actually is a corroborated racist KKK member, so that’s a different issue entirely. Yeah, that's always been my understanding of it. It was a gimmick with Kox, much like the Nazi gimmicks of the 50s. It's a bad name/gimmick that doesnt hold up, but by most accounts, it was a gimmick. With Murdoch, it was seemingly real, and JR needs to remember, be it someone he was friends with or admired for his ring work, bringing him up all the time is not ok. Regarding JR over all, at the PPV he looked like he was half dead and could barely remember names and Excalibur was covering him quite a bit. That isnt good. Now, it may be the heat combined with his age - and we cannot ignore his influence and impact - I like to watch AEW with a friend of mine who hasnt wanted wrestling since the Invasion, and when he heard JR, he was much more willing to tune in with me. The guy's voice is still synonymous with pro wrestling and for AEW, which is still growing, that is valuable.

I think part of the problem is he doesn't have Vince in his ear yelling at him to knock the bullshit off. Though Vince would probably actually enjoy this so who the f*** knows. Either way, he needs to go.

My issue with the KKK/Murdoch comparisons is just that he goes to that well constantly. I know Ross has a ton of knowledge to call back on, but his reference pool keeps hitting on these guys with such consistency and repetition that it stands out. It's not even the deepest of his commentary sins, esepcially not last night when he was as off as he was, but it's impossible to overlook that he keeps shouting these guys out and not any of a number of other people he'd have worked with or known.
