They both have voices like friendly pizza guys to me. Like, it was either him or Scott Stanford. Oh, for that aspect, I’ll accept that. And now I want Scott Stanford to sign with AEW because I love that dude. Scott Stanford was the happiest, friendliest sounding commentator I've ever heard and he always used to stare directly at you on the Canada preshows in like 2010 so I fear him

I agree it's tome for him to go but please don't replace him with Mauro, JR I can sort of just tune out Mauro is so obnoxious it actively ruins shit. That's-a-spicy-meat-a-ball. Though I wouldn't put much stock into that rumor until you start hearing it from more credible sources.

JR is still shitty 60% of the time, news @ 11
They need to limit him because you can tell when old man is in his feelings. I typically tune him out when watching Dynamite cause he be talking nonsense.
In terms of Excalibur being a lead play by play, that's a no for me. Dude is very knowledgable but he is like Tenay where they just don't get me hyped for a match by the sound of his voice. Taz has been good on commentary if you going keep him there, i'd rather he be a neutral party as opposed to his character with him interjecting little BS quips about his sucky ass group or himself

I haven't checked in this thread for a minute, but Excaliber won Announcer of the Year for a reason. If people don't like Excaliber, after he won an award for what he does, that's not a problem with Excaliber, it's the problem with the people. And please don't come back with "It's my opinion and Meltzer is wrong" business. The awards are voted on by readers, and if your opinion is somehow different than a lot of fans, that's not the problem of the talent, that's just your preferences do not mix with what people want to see. People can have valid critiques of Excalibur even if he won an award, and that’s coming from someone who generally enjoys his work. That’s also a strong stance to take all because 402 fans voted him as the Announcer of the Year.

I think Excalibur is excellent but everyone isn't going to like the same thing. It's fine to have someone say so and expain their reason. I mean shit, I think Mauro is one of the best announcers ever but not everyone agrees with that and some straight up find him awful and that's fine. It's all down to taste. What isn't down to taste is JR cleary not giving a shit and being a cranky old man

I think Excalibur is... acceptable. There are problems with him, there are things I like about him, he kind of just levels out at, "S'alright." I don't seem to recall it being especially noticeable those few weeks he wasn't there.

As an extremely casual, occasional AEW viewer he doesn't strike me as particularly terrible when I do tune in. He does seem overall less enthused than I am used to but the man is almost 70 years old, I just assumed it was age. The rest of the announce team seems fine.

My main issue is no one seems to understand their role. Excalibur is the only one who knows the move names and back stories but Ross tries to still be the lead. Tony just kinda says stuff when he can.

I've had absolutely no issues with JR his entire AEW run, aside from his accidental old man slips. Same. I do think that he was kind of bad Wednesday, but often the criticism of him feels extremely nit picky.

Controversial maybe, but I'd take curmudgeonly J.R. any day of the week over Mauro and his word vomit. I'll give Mauro a chance in AEW, and always appreciated his enthusiasm, but yeah, can't say I was a big fan of that and his ability to shoehorn a pop culture reference in everywhere... Though at some point I learned to stop letting it irritate me and just tried to laugh at the ridiculousness of it.

I think what drives me nuts most about JR is his incessant need to namedrop old wrestlers nobody remembers. Oh look at that Irish whip, invented by Danny McWhatever. Stop showing off, noone cares who invented the Irish whip. Or the Butch Reed thing. I had to look up who Butch Reed was, I assumed that he was some big deal champion from the territory era who was a massive star in his hayday and just got lost to time after the TV wrestling boom. No, he was a WCW tag-team guy who regularly lost to the Nasty Boys and Public Enemy. That's how you wanna get me excited for Will Hobbs as a future prospect, by telling me he's like this old guy who was never a big deal?

Gotta agree, as someone that always thought JR was pretty okay but never the Best Ever, he sounds pretty similar in AEW as he always has. He was mixing up Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit 15 years ago, missing a move now isn't a huge sin.

This I have to disagree with, though. Name-dropping originators of moves and styles is interesting, and also adds colour to commentary. And the Butch Reed thing was explained earlier in the thread - plus, even aside from the fact Reed was a star in Mid-South before going to WWE, AEW is a place that respects old-school wrestling and old-school wrestlers and wears that on its sleeve.

Being compared to one half of DOOM, who were former WCW tag champions, especially when Butch himself is giving you props literally before his death, which was JR's entire point in bringing it up and highlighted as such, is a really cool and respectable thing. Just because Butch Reed wasn't a big deal singles star champion doesn't mean it didn't matter. Also if you looked up Butch, one Wikipedia search shows he won a ton of belts around the territories in his time and was recognized by plenty including the PWI rankings in both singles and tag. Clown JR for the other shit, leave the Butch Reed thing alone please. Especially considering it was done out of respect for someone who recently passed away.

I agree completely, he had an off night. The random Butch Reed non-sequitur was especially jarring to me, too. Comparing Will Hobbs to a midcarder from the early 90s isn’t really going to do much to get him over. But the YOU CAN GET OUT comment was Tony, in fairness. That took me aback to. Really, JR? That's the best comparison you could have come up with. That's not even the best comparison he could have come up with from Doom. I mean, let's be fair here. There is a connection. A connection that they literally referenced seconds later on TV

Being an old school fan I really like the Butch Reed comparison. I know I'm in the minority but I still enjoy his announcing. Especially when a wrestler does something that doesn't make sense or is just silly and he calls them out on it. I like that. I still enjoy his commentary too. I understand people being against his cringeworthy comments on the women, that should totally be called out. I can even get why some people don't like when he demonstrably doesn't like/get a gimmick or spot. But I think people take it too far focusing on every little flub. If it's a choice between a guy forgetting what a spinebuster is called and a company that go out of their way not to even mention move names anymore, I'll take the former. I know that's maybe a bit of a false dichotomy but so is this "he's so terrible he has to go" stuff. I think it's the age we live in that makes us immediately dispose of things/people that aren't the exact specific way we want. Give me honest imperfection over bland perfection any day.

AEW try hard to build a diverse roster of talent with a wide range of goals and motviations. JR: It's all about the money!
Ogogo: I don't like America but do like American money. JR: Well this is terrible, how can you just be about the money? If you don't love it leave it!
Make your mind up!
