Apparently WWE officials hated it and claimed its set wrestling back 30 years.
To them I shall respond with two words: Katie Vick

To them I shall respond with two words: Katie Vick Well, 30 years ago was 1991, around the time Papa Shango used an evil puppet to control another wrestlers body with magic and... *checks notes* .. oh that happened this week on Raw. NM. And also, the 1991 and 1992 War Games were both some of the best matches of all time, so turning it back to that concept is actually a good thing.

I get the impression that Vince and the people close to him think that stuff like blood makes things less civilized and marketable for whatever reason

I do think the commercial breaks sucked. I remember after one it came back and one of the turnbuckles had come away from the post and someone had ripped the canvass and padding up exposing the plywood of the ring bed, and I felt I'd waited for them to get to the fireworks factory... and it just came back from commercial to the smoking embers.

I know he stopped bleeding early on, Austin and Bret had to lie to him about their Mania match, and he isn't wrong, it's a throwback. Bleeding is a preference and should be up to the individual. Like Alex Shelly shouldn't have been buried if he refused in TNA, and people shouldn't be punished if they want to get color. I find it helps some matches a lot. It's just part of wrestling for me.

Yeah, Vince said we don't do that Blood and Guts stuff or something along those lines in an investors meeting... and he has seemed to have a massive aversion to blading in the past. Personally, I never saw a match and thought to myself that it would have been better if the people purposely cut themselves for my amusement. I can make for a good visual at times but blading just always had that kinda barbaric undertone to me... (I am not judging anyone that does enjoy it, nor do I think they're bloodthirsty it's just been my feelings on it. ) that's not even opening the blood born disease can of worms...

Apparently WWE officials hated it and claimed its set wrestling back 30 years. Never mind storyline sense, considering all the other stuff that we know about the wrestling business in general (from WWE, TNA and other places), that seems like the overreaction to end all overreactions. Hell, this thread with all the arguments people have had and disagreements, nobody has said anything that stupid.

Props for him taking the fall, but this definitely reads like him trying to convince himself that it looked good. It most definitely did not look good when he landed. A breakaway steel grate with the same crash pad/cardboard underneath the grate out of sight of the camera would’ve been the best way to go. Regardless if we thought it "looked good" or not, it was still an insanely dangerous spot no matter what was there to protect him. Sure they could have shot it better, but frankly any number of terrible things could have happened in that spot and thankfully nothing did.

Doesn’t mean it can’t be subject to criticism for the way it looked. If you watch a Superman movie and you can see the ropes attached to Superman making him fly, that would presumably take you right out of the moment.

I'm just saying that to a wrestler, anything that dangerous that you walked away from, it's going to look go to you. As much as Jericho can be an ass, he'd be the first person saying he thought he screwed something up or he made something look bad, in a professional sense. I don't think he's deluding himself so much as going "ok, it was safe (as can be), MJF got his heat, and the crowd reacted accordingly. It looks good in my book." I just think wrestlers will look at something like that differently than a fan will is what I'm saying.

Apparently WWE officials hated it and claimed its set wrestling back 30 years. To them I shall respond with two words: Katie Vick They want to claim THAT sent wrestling back 30 years? The same company currently doing a storyline with Magical Demon Girl Alexa Bliss and her Possessed CGI Mouth Doll Lilly? Ok.

I understand about wanting to be cautious but if you can’t do the spot safely and convincingly then think of a different ending and don’t take the risk of Jericho getting hurt (which didn’t happen thankfully) or it looking slightly silly (which did)
Or heck just pre-tape it a couple of hours in advance and then edit it to look better. Or something else
I don’t think it overall took much away from the match but still

EDITOR'S NOTE: And from the looks of it, it appears the mention of that angle just temporarily broke the site.

Hell, this thread with all the arguments people have had and disagreements, nobody has said anything that stupid. It's hilarious that they're overreacting over the main event when much worse things have happened over the years. The match may have not been perfect and there could've been improvements made towards the end, but overall, it was a success in terms of what it aimed to achieved.
The way I see it, if they're really that offended with the match, then my suggestion is to simply one-up them. If you're gonna make bold statements like that, then you best be ready to put your money where your mouth is.

To them I shall respond with two words: Katie Vick The same company that had within those 30 years Foley falling from the top of Hell of a Cell (with a lot less protection compared to what Jericho had with a similar spot), countless tasteless angles, Ric Flair getting busted open whenever his forehead made contact with a surface, and had a wrestler literally die on their watch due to incompetence is in no place to say that.

Last year WWE had a match where to win you had to rip out your opponent's eyeball.

I think the ideal wrestling spot is one that is safe but looks dangerous. This was a spot that looked lame, but was dangerous. You don't want that combination.
