PW Insider reported that WWE has a new edict that is halting the release of several planned documentaries. That includes the Luger one that was supposed to debut this weekend and the Vlad the Super Fan/Nexus docs. They also noted that production on all future documentaries has also been paused.

Is this cuz of the A&E ones like they can avoid doing them in house or something?

Nooooo. Documentaries are one of the things WWE does best. I wonder why, especially the ones that are already completed.

Dang it! I was legit looking forward to the Luger one.
Wonder if it's a licensing issue.

Probably a situation where the Peacock deal stipulates they must produce a minimum number of hours of content and they don’t want to bother making anything beyond that.

Let's be real, if the Luger doc doesn't have this promo, it's worthless.

Dang it! I was legit looking forward to the Luger one. Wonder if it's a licensing issue. What would the issue be? The docs are almost all WWE archive footage and interviews shot by WWE. Any outside footage would be cleared first before being used. I'm thinking the editing department was gutted in the recent budget cuts, leading to a smaller staff having to work on finishing the editing process on these documentaries.

This sounds like purely a cost-cutting issue, with perhaps A&E not wanting WWE to essentially compete with their own stuff.

I was big into the WWE's documentaries from the mid 2000s to mid 2010s, but it seemed after that the quality started dropping?

There's no way it's a rights issue. They wouldn't have rights issues for multiple documentaries of such varying subjects at once. It's clearly a Nick Khan budgeting move.

Docs made sense when they were selling DVD's and WWE Network subscriptions. Now they're third party funded content creator focused which means they only really need to churn out the minimum of what's in their various contracts. Why invest money into developing their own documentary styled product when they can license off the content to an outside source to manage the costs involved?
This is just what WWE is now.
