Watching that struck me with the thought of why do all 3 at once? I mean a remaster of GTA 3 for its 20th anniversary probably would have sold pretty well on its own.

When you're a major corporation, those thoughts either don't occur, or they do and you decide it's more cost-effective to do it all at once. However, an open-world game is a lot more complex than, say, a platformer or a basic action game, especially when you're working with new engines and such. The general idea of taking code from Renderware and hoping it would play nice in Unreal wasn't exactly a fool's errand, but instead wishful thinking. I think these are the versions we're now stuck with going forward, unless Take-Two finally bites the bullet, pays some real money, and hires some studios with manpower to reconstruct the games. That said, it won't be a priority as long as they can keep people stalled until the Series X/PS5 releases of GTA V come out with two additional pieces of clothing for single-player mode and folks will have to shill out $70 to upgrade.

Still it feels like a weird idea cause each game seems to be worth its own $30 remaster compared to all 3 at 60 with the work it costs to do that. Remaster GTA 3 and eat the costs there and then you can do the other 2 cheaper without spending too much extra and gaining extra sales.

Frankly, I agree that remastering GTA 3 would be worth $30 given it's an open world game with 20+ hours of content and replay factor, not to mention you would have all the assets in place to make the other games with lessons learned. There are several things you would have to fix or update (a lot of animations are janky and would need to be revised or expanded if you want to incorporate modern controls, the models could use some improvement though they were going with a specific aesthetic similar to the promotional art, and I previously stressed my feelings on the gang mob mentality as you progress, which affects civilian missions), not to mention the ability to look at where bugs and glitches existed in the original source and figure out how to eliminate those, but if you only had one game to work on, as opposed to three at once, the time to improve would be relaxed. Unfortunately, I don't see this happening at all.

I wonder how much of it just came out of GTA3 not being held in very high regard compared to Vice City and San Andreas. That or the whole time Rockstar knew it'd turn out lackluster so better to milk people for $60 once than to do it for $30 with the hopes they'll fall for it again afterward.

Maybe but that's why you do a gradual build up. Sell the worst and then sell the others eventually where you sell all there in the legacy version that you put on sale every 3 months.

If they had all this time to spend on one game, they could have added some real QoL improvements that could bridge the gap between GTA3 and the others. Stuff like toning down the gang attacks (especially the one Portland gang that turns on you after the first Staunton Island mission) and improvements to annoying missions like Espresso 2 Go.

I got this a few weeks ago for half price more in hope and nostalgia than anything
Played GTA3 this past week and yeah was more enjoyable than I figured would be. Obviously been patched a few times and the bar was way way low after everything I read but yeah only 1 big bug towards the end where the waypoint kept trying to take me to a pay n spray but apart from that……
Character models, some made Claude look like a Neanderthal lol but other times looked not too bad
Vice City next though and that’s my jam right there
