I've seen a lot of people going, "How do these look so bad when the originals looked so good?" and to be honest I don't especially care about graphics so never really a hindrance for me but I kind of always thought the GTA games looked like ass until 5. The originals looked about as good as games could get at the time largely due to little coding tricks that made use of the way CRTs displayed games. Even playing the originals on modern TVs nullifies those tricks and make the games look janky as hell. Throw in the fact that with very few exceptions 3D games of the '90s and early '00s have aged like milk in the hot sun and it's not a huge shock that upscaling the textures and boosting the polygon counts will only do so much. I would certainly love a full remake of these games using GTAV as a base.

So happy you guys are enjoying this. I can never get on board with remasters like this. It always feels like that time Turner colorized Citizen Kane. It is such a weird approach to preservation. As in, this thing, though it is severely beloved and important to the mediums history, is only allowed to exist if it is 'modern' enough. Feels iffy.

So the game's been removed for sale on PC due to problems with the launcher. Also this was found in the code - Additionally except for Billie Jean the cut music is in the code, just disabled.

I was about to wonder what happened with it being on Game Pass and...yeah, that makes sense.

^ In addition to some of the…let’s be charitable and say “charmingly wonky” way some of the models are, the rain in San Andreas seems to borked all to hell. The rain is the one glaring thing that’s jumped out at me after 5ish hours playing. It is damn near impossible to play during the rain, other then that the game seems to play pretty damn good on my XB1

Not gonna lie, everything I've seen makes me want to play this even more. Looks like a beautiful disaster.

Which is as, hilarious as that is, should also not be an issue. They made 820 Million Rev last year, and refuse to spring for a few Songs? Clowns!

I also forgot how fast the cars deteriorate, and I swear they blow up faster after catching fire than I remember. Yeah, I've noticed that. Only died twice so far (in III) and it was because of the cars blowing up so fast, lol.

Probably says a lot about my play style that this was my first achievement:

People have seriously said that? It's funny because I saw a side by side screenshot of CJ in the original and in the HD version. People were complaining his hair looked shit in the HD version, and I was like 'yeah, but literally everything else looks like shit in the original'. xD

Just...the whole game looks washed with mud. Though tbh some of the HD mods for it look way better than this shit, which is probably why Rockstar threw lawyers at them.

Man, the backlash over this game seems silly. (Not really here, but elsewhere on the internets)
The entire time it seemed like a slightly upscaled version of an ugly roughly 20-year old trilogy of games. At least from my distant watch it doesn’t seem like R* is giving something other than what was said. Did people expect these redone in the GTAV engine? Are people just angry to be angry? Am I missing something?

At least from my distant watch it doesn’t seem like R* is giving something other than what was said. Did people expect these redone in the GTAV engine? Are people just angry to be angry? Am I missing something? There will always be people expecting the moon and beyond, and... you'll never please them. But I think the general synopsis was "don't blow it". The games weren't going to be upscaled to what they look like now, nor should they. But there are always elements of these games that, at least, deserved quality of life improvements. GTA III deserved a map you can look at when you pause the action as well as better gun combat, III & Vice City should at least tone down the way rival gangs attack you, San Andreas had several major glitches that could impede productivity, and that doesn't go into specifics. I believe the general anger is more how people who were sensible were hoping these games would get improvements in the gameplay so you don't have to lower expectations, but not only did these feel like straight ports without much in the way of fixing bugs or glitches, the main thing the developers cared about (the appearance) was something they failed to do with graphical mistakes and a lack of familiarity to how things were done back in the day or why. This kind of feels like the XIII "remaster"; the aesthetics were the only concern for this project, which wasn't really the thing that needed work on. Going back to the 3D Era, these games always looked like ass; that was not what needed help.

Am I missing something? There is a bit more to it than that. From what I've heard the PC version has problems with its launcher that led to it being removed from sale (but not refunded) while the Switch version is basically a trash fire, and even beyond that you've got stuff like the rain in San Andreas basically being impossible to navigate through, the game frequently crashing, vehicles just randomly launching into the air, frequent clipping, and just a ton of other glitches, plus the previous versions being removed from sale to pave the way to this mess. Combine that with Rockstar games, while frequently glitchy, at least usually being highly functional with a lot of the glitches more amusing than annoying and it's kind of a perfect recipe for people to be mad. Though what I do find overlooked in all of this is that this isn't really unusual at all for Take-Two. What really is the difference between this and the Switch version of 2K18, honestly? And really people probably should've guessed something was up when we basically didn't see a second of these games before release.

Part of this is also rooted in the growing inconsistent quality of remakes/remasters as of late. Nintendo barely doing anything with 3D All Stars, Sega fumbling an easy touchdown with Sonic Colors, and various other examples.
Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania is one of the best ones out recently, and even it screwed up Monkey Target.

HOW? they only disabled it originally, didn't they? otherwise making a remaster by adding some stuff and reskinning the original wire frame models is? It was originally just disabled before people found out about its existence, at which point all copies were pulled from shelves and they released a new version with the code and all assets and animations scrubbed. In this case the assets and animations are still scrubbed, but the code is present, though with no way to re-enable it.
