For those who didn't catch it, here is Punk's return to the wrestling ring on AEW's youtube channel.

Punk mentioning WWE by omission is such a non-issue. This isn’t Damian Sandow talking about how the WWE thought that he was too entertaining or the countless other times in TNA, WCW, and WWF where guys talked about how the other company sucks. This was CM Punk essentially saying that he took the money and financial security of the WWE but at the cost of his love of pro wrestling, but he’s found it again because AEW reminds him of those halcyon days when he was just a really good pro wrestler and was able to do what he wanted with little to no restrictions on what he said or how he wrestled, back When the world was wide open. He being older, wiser, and more mature has found that passion again .just my take on it.
It’s a shot at the WWE, but it’s not a bitter low blow by any means.

Did feel unstated too that he looks to be in fantastic shape. I'm glad AEW will won't be putting him (or anyone, really) through the grinder but he definitely looks ready for anything headed his way.

But he literally didn't even mention them by name. He was pretty damn nuanced about it and considering he almost kinda died? I think it had a ton of merit for him mentioning why he took a break and how he felt his love for wrestling felt like it died when he "left" in 2005. If literally anyone in this business had to bring up WWE in another company it was going to be and had to be Punk... it's literally the reason for all of this. The entire domino effect. How is this different than how WWE guys use to talk about the company down south or WCW guys always called the company up north? He didn't call them up by name. Its not that big of a deal IMO. Because those guys didn't almost die due to WWE's negligence.

I wish I could share the enthusiasm, I’m happy to see him, but it would have been so much more interesting if he hadn’t mentioned the competition at all. And I also wish they had picked someone else as his first opponent, especially with the accusations in the air. No joke..that has to be the part that stood out the most to me. Not because it was a “diss”..but the fact that it really wasn’t. He stated a fact: That he wasn’t happy in that place. That’s it. And the main point of it was trying to explain to any detractors why he’s been away. It sticks with me because it was quite level-headed. It didn’t read as bitter to me. At all.

It's a far cry from the Voodoo Kin Mafia calling Trips & HBK out by their shoot names in TNA.

My 2 cents regarding Punk referring to WWE.
I understand people not liking Punk referencing WWE. Whenever someone does it we always see people who dislike it and everytime people are like "no it's ok because-" and honestly that'll never change. A lot of AEW fans just don't like people having their own opinion towards that, not everybody's gonna like it. I'm honestly thinking that we will never have a time where people let others' opinions ride out regarding that simply because people like WWE getting a shot at them. If there was ever a time where someone referenced WWE, someone said they didn't like it and people had no issue with it then shit, show me that on this forum. It's the same ol same ol and honestly it's lame to me. Everybody's got an opinion and that's one opinion that people are free to have regardless of others' opinions.
Regarding Punk though, this is the one time where I personally didn't have an issue with any WWE references simply because his entire being this past decade's been associated with it. Unlike Britt Baker and a lot of other shots, this is embedded with Punk's history, he left wrestling because of them and to this day when you mention him you think of what happened with WWE. Him bringing up WWE now feels more complete and from a character perspective, from a story perspective and from a "Punk is finally healing perspective" it needed to be done. If he didn't it would be the elephant in the room and we'd be waiting for an interview to where he mentioned them.
If people didn't like him referencing WWE, I understand because all those other references I thought were lame.
Punk though, I'd actually be disappointed if he hadn't due to the fact that it's such an important part of him and wrestling. Punk wanted to heal tonight and honestly if he didn't reference them, he wouldn't have healed. He's good now.

There's nothing quite as nice as a huge crowd in wrestling simultaneously happily screaming "YEAH!!!!!!" when getting something wanted.
Also who else has the entrance on loop rn

He looked fit and healthy and totaly heartened by the reaction.
I hope that's his last mention of WWE. It was expected in his debut but he doesn't need to resort to that. The fact he moved onto a storyline by the end is a good sign.

From the post show media scrum, good sign of things to come..
Also of note, been talking for a year and a half and the fact the Brodie stuff didn’t leak made an impression on him.

Is it safe to say that the opening notes of Cult of Personality have become the biggest muscle memory reflex for a crowd to pop since Austin's Glass Shatter, Rock's "IF YA SMEELLLLL-" or Daniel Bryan's opening violins to his WWE theme?
