I thought he was more compelling as the Backwoods Swamp Preacher, but yeah, eventually they just reduced him to the guy that kept saying "THEY LYIN' TO YOU, MAAAAAAAAAN!", and unintentionally made it, and him, into a joke (though, if you wanted to argue that the "Projecting Bugs on the Ring Canvas" thing was intended to make him a joke, I wouldn't argue against it). I also think that Bray, especially in his Cult Preacher incarnation, would be amazing in the Extended Universe (BTE, Sammy, maybe even Uno) blogs. It absolutely perplexes me that they couldn't book Swap Cult leader Bray correctly. I mean, they didn't even get the easiest part right, which would be HIM ACTUALLY CONVERTING SOMEONE SUCCESSFULLY. In an alternate universe, after his WM match with John Cena, Bray Wyatt immediately renews his feud with Daniel Bryan, becoming his first (abs ultimately only) title challenger. The Authority immediately moves into a program with The Shield. And after those run their course, The Wyatt Family and The Shield go into an extended program together.

I think Malakai Black is proof that the type of character Windham plays would do fine in AEW. You can be spooky without going into supernatural powers and I think Bray was at his hokiest when the supernatural stuff really started playing into things. Like when he became Odo for a night and shapeshifted into Sister Abigail in his promos.
That said, AEW's roster is really stacked now and I'm not sure how Windham would fit in it and get the TV time he deserves. In Impact, he'd be a shark amongst fish but with the way they do their TV tapings now, he might have to wait awhile to debut even after he signs.

If AEW can have Malakai Black and Abadon around then Windham can absolutely f***ing go to that company and thrive in whatever he'd decide to do as a character. That's not even a question.
I also absolutely believe AEW is interested and will work on a deal. As others have said... dude's an instant merch mover and eye catcher. He would fit right in whether it's getting involved with Dark Order or something else entirely.

He really doesn't rely on it though? Guy was crazy over even back when his whole thing was just being a backwoods cult leader living in the swamp, well before he had actual powers. Also if anything Tony Khan should open his mind up to it a bit given how f***ing boring Matt is without it. To me this is Tony's achilles heel. It seems every promoter has one. Vince's is "vanilla midgets" not realizing that height and size don't equate to being over, and connecting with your audience. Vince's "vanilla midgets" came into WWE when they were near their peak as performers, and at a time when WCW's fortunes were seen as waning because they had just lost their steadiest stream of fan interest. The nWo might have been the ones to put butts in seats, but the cruiserweights, especially the Radicalz, were the ones who kept those butts on the edges of those seats. Once they left, that was the signal that WCW had overplayed their hand. I've already said my crazy-ass piece about what I think of the Fiend character and the damage it caused to other talents' gimmicks and trajectories within WWE. If Tony Khan wants Rotunda, he could have him signed at noon, and on Rampage tonight - but I doubt that Khan wants him. There just seems to be too much unsaid about Rotunda that might make him a Big Problem, and signing Rotunda might be closing the Forbidden Door to other, more lucrative prospects.

Now that his no-compete is up, it's gonna be very interesting to see where Windham winds up.

One upside for Impact if indeed Bray isn't interested is that it frees up potential funds to sign some various ROH talent now looking for bookings.

I have said it constantly...Bray could work in AEW...IF he leaves the supernatural aspects either out of it completely or leaves it completely ambiguous.
Because to me and this is the constant across every single straightforward wrestling company that has ever attempted to impliment supernatural aspects...it completely clashes and creates this nonsensical narrative.
But wrestling companies want to have their cake and eat it to because for the most part wrestling fans for long time have never really questioned wrestling on that level..never really ask how can this work when this is taking place etc , only over last couple years has it really started moving in that direction to create a coherence of story and character...and no longer of oh it is just wrestling who cares.
LU is the blue print example of implimenting a supernatural,sci-fi, fantasy element and making it work and getting your audience to buy into all of it.

His dad and brother are at the Knoxville Comic-Con this weekend. I hope he makes a surprise appearance.

Apparently Tony Khan just followed Bray's Instagram so that could be a hint he's AEW bound.

He's too larger than life for Impact and their tiny crowds. And he's probably not a good enough in-ring worker for NJPW. AEW seems like the obvious choice.

If he does go to AEW then they'd want him to debut at Full Gear rather than a Dynamite both to sell the moment and to get people to tune in for the following weeks Dynamite so which match would you expect him to pop up in? Darby/MJF, Punk/Kingston, the tag match with the four ex WWE guys (spoiler he destroys Cody in their first match and Cody goes away and trains really really hard so he wins the rematch) or maybe the Inner Circle/ATT match.

At least Bray isn't exactly a character you need to have actively chasing titles and stuff. He should certainly dabble in it at points but he can also just go around screwing with people, provided you have that have actual longterm consequences that affect the characters and the show as a whole instead of being forgotten instantly like his WWE stuff or isolated entirely to its own pocket universe like Cody is.

I'm still inclined to think that if he were actually a problem backstage they'd be giving specifics instead of all of these vague, "Ohohohoho, he was SO BAD you guys!" bits of nonsense.

Yes. I said this for the last 2 years. If he did a copyright-safe version of his character(s) so far, that would be something else.

The flipside of Impact for Windham is that their mass taped format can actually work in his favor. Much of what allowed the Broken Hardys to thrive in Impact was that their cinematic matches or wacky skits would be inserted into the shows without having the paying audience sit on their hands watching a giant screen for minutes on end. It was also an asset to Impact because their stuff was spoiler proof programming, as you had to wait until the shows aired to see what actually happened, instead of reading a spoiler report a month ago.
