People are saying on Reddit "the promo on Night 1 will be used to set up a match on Night 2 to drive ticket sales!" and my brain hurts. Doesn't make sense to me.

Interesting, what didn’t you like about his in-ring? He was a tremendous worker pre-neck injury and then became a top-notch brawler and storyteller after. I agree. I think there's a gap between "Stunning" Steve Austin and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. "Stunning Steve" was more of a technical wizard in the ring, believe it or not. After the neck injury and in the "Stone Cold" phase, he resorted more to brawling. Not so much in 2001.

Just call it a match. I don't think people will be expecting a 20 minute classic. We all know what this will be.

That would be a weird choice, especially since WWE would rather both nights are sold out and people aren't buying tickets from second-hand sources when they should already be going.

People weren't disappointed with what Goldberg had to offer. And it's in Texas. Whatever he does will work. I think people are overthinking this. Have faith in your audience.

And Austin wasn't exactly known for 20 minute classics outside of, like, his matches against Rock. The match against Undertaker at Summerslam is very much a mixed bag in terms of people's opinions because of the lengths, for example.

It should be a 5 min brawl that ends with Austin standing talk with a crowd celebration
Gets the crowd hype and serves its purpose without expectations of this being a match

Austin was a rejuvenated, bumping, wrestling machine in 2001 with an expanded moveset putting on some of the best matches of his career with his repaired neck. He went so hard that as soon as 2002 rolled around he was done.

For as much as 2001 was a real creative downslide compared to past years, Austin had one of his best years in terms of character work and matches, Angle/Austin at SummerSlam was an all time classic even if the characters of Angle and Austin were terribly written for at points. 2002 felt like him going through the motions when the heel turn basically flopped and the reboot happened. Taker/Austin at Judgment Day 2001 and Backlash 2002 felt like they happened decades ago for their overall quality.

This was a man who's neck was fused taking belly to belly suplexes on the floor mats outside. He went all out that year. By 2002 his body was failing him and well that was it

Like, what could you do with face Steve Austin that hadn't been done before since even in his prime, he wasn't exactly the "suplex on the outside" sort of guy?

How many German suplexes did he take in that one Smackdown match with Benoit?

I watched that live and couldn't really comprehend it.
