Randy Savage is my #1 favorite talent of all time and is my basic idea of a “perfect wrestler”. That said, the man was a terrible abuser by many accounts.

A lot of these people ended up getting exposed during the Speaking Out movement. Guys like Quack and Aries had years of stories of them being pretty crappy but a vast majority of people ignored these stories until Speaking Out.
But I think a lot of people right now don't really get a pass for being shitty. Closest I can really think of is maybe people ignoring some of the stuff that the people in charge of GCW have done behind the scenes that don't paint them in the greatest light but it's ignored because of insane shows.

Eh...Unless they're extreme in nature (Drake Younger/Sarah Rowe/etc.), a person's political stance doesn't necessarily make them a bad person... The only ones I can think of have been mentioned (Hogan/Flair).. Oh, what shit is Sarah Logan into?

Yet he is now one of WWE's go-to legends, especially in the post-Hogangate times. I guess so long as you don't get caught saying something racist...

The British Bulldogs (especially Dynamite Kid) seemed like legit bullies and douchbags, but somehow get a pass from some fans because of their work in Japan. From the stories I heard, Davey Boy Smith was more or less a tagalong who is influenced by whoever he was hanging out with at the time. When he was teaming with/hanging out with a more-light hearted prankster Owen Hart, he emulated his mannerisms accordingly such as making prank phone calls and goofing around with the entrance themes of his co-workers when they came out for matches. Isn't really an excuse for all the shit he did with The Dynamite Kid(especially to Matilda), but I don't think he was necessarily a scumbag on his own, or at least nearly as bad as Dynamite. EDIT:my mistake, according to wikipedia; "Smith and his wife Diana had two children, Harry (born 2 August 1985 in Calgary)[62] and Georgia (born 26 September 1987, also in Calgary).[63] In early January 2000, Smith and Diana divorced, with Diana ultimately gaining custody of their son.[64] Shortly after his release from the WWF in 2000, Smith entered an Atlanta drug rehabilitation clinic [65]to treat his addiction to prescription Opiate painkillers, including morphine, upon which he had become dependent following a 1998 back injury suffered while in WCW.[66] 2000 would also see Smith arrested for allegedly threatening to kill Diana and her sister Ellie.[67] This would not be Smith's last interaction with the law: following an altercation at "The Back Alley," a Calgary bar, Smith was charged with aggravated assault against 19-year-old wrestler Kody Light after a dispute regarding how Light had spoken to Diana. The charges were later dropped.[68] Andrea Redding, Smith's girlfriend from 2000 to his death, has stated that they were planning to get married shortly before his death.[" I still stand by Smith being a tagalong though, with being paired with Dynamite making him worse.

For my own contribution, Mae Young gets a pass for mugging guys in her younger years all because she played a horny octogenarian and took dangerous bumps in her second career. I believe I also heard someone on this forum mention she played Moolah's right-hand woman in all the shady stuff she supposedly did.
Also, despite The Steiner Brothers being one of the greatest work-rate tag teams of all-time, backstage they were terrors to be around. Sodomizing a defenseless jobber with a pencil(I hope to god that think wasn't sharpened) and tying up Dink and throwing fruit at him. Scott also gets something of a pass because of him becoming a meme with "he's fat" and his math.
In this business, the lines can be really blurred on who to honor/praise and who to shun. Does that make us being fans guilty by association?

Andre the Giant comes to mind. Seems like half the stories you hear about him are either him taking liberties with guys he didn't like and roughing them up or his hatred for any other big guys and bullying them. Maybe not the worst guy, but seems like he was a douche This was the hand that "checked your oil"

I don't know if it's a pass by the fans, cause I don't think most of the fans care alot then at all, but Ron and Don Harris sure did keep getting jobs for a long time despite the fact they had actual nazi tattoos

It’s not the majority by any means but the fact that so many still cape for Benoit and try to make that “separate the performer from the person” argument is weird.

Him and Warrior are "safer" because, well, they're dead, easier to brush stuff over them, and they're unlikely to do anything in future. Hardcore fans will know, but anything about them isn't going to be big news the PR people need to worry about. Hogan, you don't know if something's going to come out of his mouth next week.

It’s not the majority by any means but the fact that so many still cape for Benoit and try to make that “separate the performer from the person” argument is weird. That one gets to me. I bet you if that was some hoss the IWC hated such as Batista or Goldberg that did it, there wouldn't be a "separation of performer from person argument" since they weren't "in-ring generals. They would even bring up their fake workrate on top of the murders as an excuse to bash them. I might bring up Chris Benoit and his matches and storylines in some threads and not bring up how his life ended, but what he did will always be the first thing that comes to mind whenever I hear his name. Hogan, Warrior, Savage, and Austin I can separate their on-screen characters from the things they say/did off screen and will continue to do so unless Hogan or Austin kill someone in the future, and WWE will react accordingly(I think/hope).

Undertaker’s reputation as a locker room leader seems to have overshadowed that a toxic culture persisted long past its sell-by date largely because he was happy with the way things were.

None of us were there, and there's people on both sides. Anyway, I'll go another further on this, and while it's more "get a pass for being in horrible angles", how about how Mae Young was turned into a legacy figure for the women's division despite playing a horny octogenarian and being the comic relief on WWE shows for like a decade plus?

Kind of all of them really except the most horrible. I mean even in this thread it's like well so and so did this but hey, they didn't kill anyone. I mean wrestlers, especially back in the day, weren't the best people. Even a guy like Bret who is pretty universally respected was a huge adulterer and cheated on his wife all the time. If that guy was your neighbor and worked at the bank you probably wouldn't call them a great person.
It's a different standard with wrestlers because so many were just such horrible people. A guy like New Jack gets a lot of passes for trying to literally kill someone in the ring. In a lot of ways being a fan means you have to give some of them a pass for being pretty rotten human beings.
Keep in mind I say those two things while also claiming Bret Hart as my favorite wrestler ever and being thoroughly entertained by New Jack at different points. It just is what it is with most of these guys.
