I’m pretty sure the each individual member of the cast of full house was more famous than Tommie Page ever was and they made it seem like he was the biggest deal ever

I vaguely remember some episode of Family Matters (or some TGIF show) where they had some D-list celebrity play themselves while everyone on the show treated them like Tom Cruise. Even at the time, I was like “every single member of this cast is a bigger star than this.” Tracie Spencer? Full House did the same thing with Tommy Page, who even when I was 7 years old knew was a D lister who's only notoriety was doing a song with New Kids on their way down. You could also say Full House and the Beach Boys, but that makes a bit more sense with the success of Kokomo and The Stamos Connection.

Wilson Wilson from Home Improvement wound up being a cousin of Brian Wilson or some such thing as well when the Beach Boys went on to soak up the last few seconds of 90's fame the Beach Boys had. And I love the Beach Boys.

Drew Carey at the 2001 RR had a load of segments and even a mini storyline at a big 5 PPV and really looked like he'd rather be anywhere else in the world. Weirder as DC was promoting a comedy PPV, so a big chunk of change probably got dumped into Vince's lap for the exposure hence the arse kissing, but Carey himself put so little effort in to promoting it. Somehow got a HoF night out from it too years later, maybe he was a riot backstage and left a great impression just hid it well when he was onscreen. Am pretty sure Vince got a good chunk of change out of putting Carey in the HoF, as they were promoting a short-lived improv show he was doing on the CW at the time. Also led to this facepalm-worthy bit.

I recall a couple episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer where the characters would be gushing over some minor alt rock group like Cibo Matto playing at the Bronze, when in reality the actors on the show were probably more well known at the time than the band.

Every episode of Friends with Bruce Willis in it. His character was terrible and it was obvious that he wasn’t trying very hard. And yet they not only kept him around but they made him a love interest for Rachel. Fun fact: Willis appeared on those episodes (for free!) after losing a bet to Matthew Perry on the set of The Whole Nine Yards.

Anyone remember that old episode of the Super Mario cartoon dedicated to Milli Vanilli, where Princess Peach Toadstool and Wendy Kootie Pie were revealed to be huge fans of theirs, the two singers voiced their own characters despite their horrendous accents, they played some of their real songs, and then like a month later they were revealed to be complete frauds? The cherry on top was when they were being forced to perform for the Koopas and one of them actually said "How are we supposed to perform without our back-up singers?"

To be fair, if they were gushing over multiple artists (it's been a minute since I've watched), then you could at least say it's just in character for them to be fans of these bands. To be balanced, if all these bands were handpicked by showrunner Joss Whedon, then it could be argued that Joss was actually kissing his own ass... which would hardly be a first.

Not a TV show, but... That's the whole joke, though. Not really. The movie plays it sincerely, only for the drug allegations that eventually exposed him as a fraud to start appearing almost as soon as the movie was released.

Has the original version seen the light of day since the 1990s? I’ve watched the episode several times. I think on Netflix, a YouTube, upload, and maybe even some physical media releases. As you’d expect they edit out the original Milli Vanilli music and just have them dance as a generic instrumental plays instead.

That's because Tommy and Adam were the only old school rangers worth a damn. (That's just what I imagine a studio's opinion would be, not my own.) They’re missing out on that sweet Amy Jo Johnson nostalgia money. I imagine she had to be the first crush of a lot of millennials. Edit: Nuts just beaten to it! Oh well, great minds and all that I'm slightly younger so I'll throw in a point for Pink Time Ranger Jen quite possibly being my gay awakening.

This isn't really directly relevant but feels like a good time to mention it, someone actually modded Peach's outfit from that episode into Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Cibo Matto etc. were cool more than they were big time stars. Anyway, what about how the Bojack Horseman writers treated Jessica Biel? They made her the face of the Bielist and everything! If they hadn't given her that one flaw of disliking avocado, she'd have just been completely perfect.

Of course it's Kendall Gill on My Brother and Me. This reminded me of Ron Harper on Kenan & Kel. I legit thought he was on Jordan's level as a kid since he was on TV.

That South Park episode with Pewdiepie. Obviously it aged horribly but even at the time it was bad. It felt like Matt and Trey saw themselves in Pewdiepie as a young creator that did his own thing and succeeded, and it blinded them from making the hour long episode anything but a puff piece.

Not really. The movie plays it sincerely, only for the drug allegations that eventually exposed him as a fraud to start appearing almost as soon as the movie was released. I meant them mocking the trope Thing is, they weren't. In the fallout of Armstrong's scandal the director talked about how they played it straight as that was what the movie needed, and that if they had taken the more satirical route it would have aged better but not worked as well.
