What's always bugged me on Superman's strength is actually the question of why does he usually look like a brick shithouse? What's the dude lifting to put on muscle?

I mean, I don't hug someone with the same level of force I'd lift something or punch someone in the face, I don't know why Superman would need to be any different. He also doesn't have to use a STARR Labs-developed toilet, so if he's not firing out sound barrier-breaking shits, he probably jizzes normally, too.

I like that it does make his cover story more plausible, though. An only child who grew up on a farm. Yeah, he'd probably be a big dude.

Right, like we have seen him do stuff like get angry and leave his fingermarks in things, but that's not indicative of a total lack of control or anything.

I mean, humans control our strength too. We don't break eggs when we pick them up unless we want to. Superman does the same just on a massive scale. We have motor control and so does he, just again, on a larger scale.

Yeah, and he was working on the farm before he got his powers. I guess even in continuities where "Superboy" is a thing, this is usually still true. Since the post Crisis origin he developed his powers slowly. So he had plenty of time to put on muscle while he was a mostly normal farmboy. Pre Crisis he had his powers from birth but he also generally had lots of super Kryptonian tech so he would have super workout machines and the like to get buff with.

Superman looks jacked because male power fantasy. That's really all it is. the psychology behind Superman was to appeal to young children who basically want to live a "you cant make make go to bed" fantasy. There are entire classes in some universities about it.

Reeve looks pretty jacked to me.
I mean, it's comics. Everything is taken to a heightened state of reality where muscle tone can be seen through costumes as clearly as if the muscles were bare. Batman's usually drawn as a heavily muscled guy but is also faster, more agile, and more stealthy than someone of his bulk should be. Comics don't obey real-world physics when it comes to body types.
As for live action, as long as the actor looks good in whatever suit they give them, that's the important part, IMO. I'd love to see a Wonder Woman that's built like Chyna was but it'll probably never happen because Hollywood goes for the conventionally attractive look to please the largest number of viewers. That's why the dudes are ripped and the girls are like models.

And to be fair, while Melissa Benoist isn't exactly a body-builder, she was in fantastic-looking shape for Supergirl.

What's always bugged me on Superman's strength is actually the question of why does he usually look like a brick shithouse? What's the dude lifting to put on muscle? The incels who think Superman needs to be jacked up need to explain why Christopher Reeve, Terrance Stamp and Melissa Benoist were not, despite all three of their characters having the same powers. If you’re looking for an answer from the comics, Clark Kent has spent at least three decades absorbing solar radiation that has caused his muscles to hypertrophy. That explains why he has big muscles, despite not having heavy weight to use for progressive overload. Even still, Clark Kent’s official height and weight are 6’3,” and 235 pounds. He’s definitely a big guy, but a well built man that size isn’t too crazy in the real world, never mind comics. I’m not really sure what you consider “jacked up,” to be, but Reeve was 6’4,” and 215 pounds of muscle for Superman. If you look up pics of his training for the role, you’ll see the man was big and lifted serious weight to look the part. For Terrance Stamp, who was around 6 feet tall and 170 pounds when he played his role, your explanation is Zod grew up on Krypton. He didn’t get the solar radiation from a yellow sun that would’ve caused him to grow larger. With that said, Zod in the comics is still 6’2,” and 215 pounds, which isn’t far off from Reeve. In the comics, as well as other media, Supergirl is shown to be more fit and toned, rather than “jacked up.” In fact, her height and weight in the comics are 5’5,” and 120 pounds, which are the same as Melissa Benoist. I haven’t read a lot of comics featuring the character, but I’ve never seen her shown to be overly “jacked up,” as you described. Also, like Zod, she spent a good part of her life on Krypton, not Earth. In terms of competition, she’d be closer to a bikini competitor than a bodybuilder. It’s also funny to me that people are looking for scientific answers to questions about a comic book superhero in a movie. I remember people saying “explain the science of mermaids,” not to long ago when they were asked how a character would look a certain way after living in the depths of the ocean. I guess that’s just the internet, and I hope I was able to clear up some stuff.

Superman and Lois have been cast. www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/superman-legacy-cast-david-corenswet-rachel-brosnahan-1235358907/No idea who either actor is, so will wait and see the final product. This quote from Gunn has me very cynical of what he'll create. What does that even mean? “I completely relate to Superman because he’s everything I am,” Gunn told The Hollywood Reporter in April for a cover story. “He’s somebody who is an outsider who feels like an alien, but also the ultimate insider, because he’s f***ing Superman. And that’s kind of like what I feel like.” It means the movie will flop because the director doesn't realise that outside of the advantages presented to him by the MCU, he offers very little and will be horribly exposed in the shitfest that is DC. I mean I don't think that's accurate at all. Gunn is a phenomenal director and was so prior to his Marvel work. He's also done a dc movie and tv show which were both critically acclaimed.

Gunn’s work outside Marvel has been fine, and I don’t think he’s made anything that wasn’t at least entertaining. My concern is he’s not who I’d go with for Superman. Neither Guardians of the Galaxy nor Suicide Squad cared too much about comic accuracy when it came to the characters, their looks or their personalities. He was able to get away with that when using obscure characters (don’t pretend you read GOTG or Charlton Comics), but doing that with Superman would cause him the same problem Snyder had in his films.

That might be true for now, but the DCU seems to bring out people's worst sooner or later. It finds your weaknesses like that hotel in The Shining.
