One downstream effect of a tentpole movie like this not doing well, and for the brand as a whole lagging in pop culture interest, is I could see Disney tightening their purse strings and puckering their sphincters, which would mean the weirder, more comic book-oriented, niche, and, probably, more creative stuff won't get made at all. More and more, something like Werewolf by Night, for example, looks like the exception in a Phase 4 sea of The Marvels, Quantumania, Wakanda Forever, Love and Thunder, Eternals, and Black Widow. A rising tide lifts all boats, but it's also more water in which to drown, made all the worse if you're without a life preserver. And that's just it, isn't it? Studio execs are notorious for learning the wrong lessons from the successes and failures on their watches. Bob Iger has already confirmed that they'll be scaling back the number of productions going forward, but what productions will fall by the wayside?

It'll be really interesting to see how Deadpool does being the only 2024 MCU release. Taking a lengthy break from putting things out might help reinvigorate some interest.

Deadpool being a hard R should also be interesting, as it means there's a full 15 months without an MCU movie that falls in their usual age rating.

I’m pretty sure you could release 20 MCU movies next year, with 19 of them bombing and Deadpool 3 will still be a success. People f***ing love those movies, I imagine it’s immune from any MCU fatigue

Deadpool doesn't need the MCU either for marketing or continuity. Deadpool 1 and 2 proved that.
You have Ryan Reynolds doing his thing in front of and behind the camera and Deadpool 3 should be great.

This movie’s opening box office is gonna be the MCU equivalent of the discourse surrounding wrestling show ratings, isn’t it?

It’s legitimately the best possible scenario that could have happened. One movie…with Hugh Jackman playing Wolverine? Couldn’t have worked out better.

It says a lot that even the people who saw this movie and didn’t dislike it can only focus on other people not liking it and saying “It was fun I guess! Ever try not hating fun?” because there doesn’t seem to be too much to say about the film itself one way or the other. I’ll watch it when it hits Disney+ but the trailers have been so soulless and even barring the strike, which I am sure did a number on the media tour for the movie, there’s so little hype behind it and not really any angle I can see them taking to tell a story that will be compelling, and that’s as someone who enjoyed the Ms. Marvel show. I’m glad Marvel seems to be taking a step back and reevaluating their plans going forward because I used to see every MCU day one but a lot of the shows and the movies lately have been mediocre, unfocused, and even visually charmless and unappealing. I want them to turn it back around because I like when things are good, because I enjoy having good things to watch, and I’m really looking forward to Echo as an example of the kind of focused, character-driven storytelling with clean action that I want them to get back to. This is like the third MCU movie in a row where I’m like “naaaahhhh I’ve gotta wait on this one” which would have been unthinkable to me a few years ago but Eternals was really a turning point for me. The people saying they had fun with the movie are at least talking about the actual movie. A lot of the negative is the standard "M She U!!!" OK, but what about the movie? "Marvel is failing, this won't make money" OK, but what about the movie? People actually talking about the movie are generally being "its fun, nothing groundbreaking but had a good time". Not that there's no criticism, sounds like it's a 6/10 but the people focusing on the positives are at least talking about the actual thing more.

...All in all, very fun movie, probably going to see it again on my off day. Solid B to B+, which is about on-par with the RT Audience Score. Go check it out... Cool, looking forward to trying to watch it sometime this week too.

Have a feeling that The Marvels will gross less the 2nd weekend than Five Nights at Freddys and Thanksgiving Thanksgiving, maybe. It's projected to make about $10-15 million. FNAF? Not a chance. It took only $9 million over the weekend as is losing most of its screens to Thanksgiving. Even with a huge drop, The Marvels should be third behind Hunger Games and Trolls, though both of those have very soft projections as well. Folks just aren't particularly hyped about anything released this month, it seems.

Feel like if The Marvels is doing this badly then WBD should be terrified for Aquaman, because that basically has all of the same things running against its chances as well as a host of others.

I know there have been exceptions to the rule, but it feels to me the theaters have never recovered from the pandemic. Just feels to me we're getting a lot more box office bombs than we ever did before covid hit hard. I'm sure there are other factors, like fatigue and such, but just feels like theaters have taken a beating and haven't recovered as of yet and it may never be like it was.

The Marvels is good. Fun is fine. I'm sorry you hate fun. It's going to be the biggest financial bomb in the post-covid world. While you had fun, about 70% of their core audience is gone I bet a LOT of them will be back once that next Avengers movie hits. This is going to "bomb", but I really enjoyed it and that's all I care about. edit: They will see Deadpool next year. LOL

I will never understand people's NEED for this movie to bomb. The posts and tweets from the haters look like they're pleasuring themselves over this movie not doing well. It's not healthy. These are the same people that were celebrating Megan Rapinoe tearing her ACL over the weekend in her final game. Disagree with her statements all you want, but celebrating an injury like that? Scumbags.
