Not sure if there has been this much hype for a movie (let alone two) since pre-pandemic, and they have the same release date?
How did this happen?

Nolan ended his partnership with WB after how they handled Tenet (I actually agree with WB abd what they did because the filmmakers sounded full of themselves expecting people to go and watch during a pandemic, don't agree with WB not telling them though) and to spite him they're releasing a surefire megahit.

it's a sign of the apocalypse.
not the world ending event but the next iteration of the mutant being brought into the mcu.

So they can swerve the fans and form the tag-team Oppen-Barbie!
"Don't tell me...ROBERT OPPENHEIMER HAS JOINED WITH BARBIE!"

Robert Oppenheimer will turn up as Milich Oppenheimer in Barbie's post-credits scene.

I mean, theoretically they'd have completely different audiences so it wouldn't be that huge of a conflict.

Honestly I completely intended to do the Barbenheimer thing today but decided to take it easy at home since been having gout issues and I have a dentist appointment on Monday. Planning to do it on Thursday.

From what reports alleged, Nolan was annoyed they still were considering other schedule changes that were being made but Universal probably had intentions of releasing a Nolan movie next to any Warner Bros one, it just happened to be the one with the most contrast.
The marketing they could get from social media was an unintended but probably nice side effect.

I think both WB and Nolan are probably happy that fans have ran with the Barbenheimer trend and are likely seeing both movies rather than picking one or the other. It helps that both movies are actually good and not just ironically good.

Its really turned into a massive plus for both films as Barbieheimer crossed over into the mainstream and increased interest in both. Doing the double bill next Sunday including Oppenheimer at 70mm IMAX

I love it, love the hype it’s generated for ppl to go see two films on the opposite side of the spectrum that aren’t a Star Wars flick or a superhero flick. Nolan’s one of the last bastions of a director capable of drawing people in on his name value alone. And Barbie, though a popular IP, is uncharted territory as far as a film goes. It’s awesome. It’s rejuvenating and refreshing.
For the record, was only able to catch Oppendaddy: Incredible film. Possibly Nolan’s finest work, but I wouldn’t go as far to say it’s my favorite of his. Absolutely watch it in IMAX if you can.

I don't think there's a deeper practical reason that Nolan being like "uh, no, you are not changing my release date".
But the hype about the supposed rivalries might help both movies.
For what it's worth it sounds like Barbie made $20 mil on Thursday and Op made $9, so.....

I’d be curious to see how many showings there are for each per day. Barbie is an hour shorter and on twice as many screens around here. I watched Oppenheimer yesterday. Then I drove to a different county to the only theater showing Cobweb.
I had a Cobenheimer weekend. …. Webenheimer? Oppwebheimer?
Either way…both were good.

Just imagine if Universal decided to wait for this day to release Cocaine Bear as well.

I was too busy to really look at show times yesterday. My Barbie showing started at 3 PM, Oppenheimer at 5, and they were on opposite sides of the building too. Only reason I made it in time was because of the previews and ads lol. Looking at my theater's website now. Today, Barbie had 16 viewings and Oppenheimer had 8.

I just counted how many showings of Barbie and Oppenheimer there were today in theaters closer than I drove to to see Cobweb (about a half hour drive)
Barbie - 116 Oppenheimer- 68
