What if they didn't reveal him. Like, in storyline terms, say he was Undertaker's adopted father who took him in after Taker's parents died and taught him to use his powers and such.
An evil old man basically.

I am not sure here why it turning out to be Vince was such a bad pay off. It did set up the stephanie turning on Vince in the Vince v Triple H match, and it was a nice little moment in the "it was me austin, it was me all a long!" The whole story line though was overly complicated and over the top - but the payoff I dont think was as horrible as the thread makes out - if anything it increased ratings.

what if it was Steph as a way to destroy her dad and get control of WWF
This was before the whole Mcmahon/helmsley debacle, so it would have been shocking at the time.
Actually no that's just stupid

The whole story line though was overly complicated and over the top - but the payoff I dont think was as horrible as the thread makes out - if anything it increased ratings. my problem isn't so much how things played out after the unveiling. the reason vince was a bad choice was it made very little sense if it was him. it was a very round a bout way for vince to get stone cold. why would vince have the undertaker go after stephanie and all of that when his plan was just to destroy austin. wouldn't it have been simpler to just combine the corporation and ministry and go after him? what was the point in all the build up if it was vince all along?

i went and rewatched the segment when the higher power was revealed, and you're right on the money. can you imagine the crowd reeaction when the hood is pulled back to reveal jake, who then goes on to cut an insamely evil promo, then goes on to feud with austin. I would've had Austin try to attack the Higher Power, only to get attacked by the Ministry. Then they'd hold his arms, allowing the Higher Power to plant him with a familiar move--the DDT. He then unmasks as Roberts and cuts a promo. He would explain that his run as a Christian was merely a ruse designed to create, in his words, "a chaos bringer"--Austin. By "creating" Austin (by becoming his victim), Roberts introduced chaos into the WWF. He knew that Austin's rise would cause Vince to take action, bringing the two sides into conflict and leaving the company ripe for takeover. And while Taker had opposed him in the past by succumbing to a false sense of morality, he had now come back to his dark ways (and to Jake). It could've been a huge dialectic web that connected every angle in the WWF. That would've been awesome on so many levels. Too bad Jake was messed up, even at that time.

So much shady crap went down in 1999, along with the darkest story lines that I can remember. So much it'd take 3 pages to describe.
Of course WWF skyrocketed in business, with WCW entering a panic mode and eventually stumbling.
1999 in WWF hasn't been topped since in terms of overall crowd heat and mainstream buzz... maybe it's because they did such wacky storylines. 2000 and on seemed pretty tame in comparison if you ask me.
