One time I went to a Gamestop and they had Big Bang Theory playing on a TV. That was pretty terrifying.

Back around 2005: Me: (holding a Midways Greatest Hits 2 game case) "Hi, I'd like to get a new copy of this for the PS2." Clerk: (takes box, opens it up and gets a disk out of the drawer and puts it in the case) "That will be $21.15." Me: "Can I have a new copy of the game?" Clerk: "That is a new copy." Me: "That's an opened copy. Do you have one in the shrinkwrap still?" Clerk: "This is a new game. We just take it out of the case for the display, but it carries all the same warranties as a new game." Me: "But that's an opened game. To me that's a used game." ClerK: (gazing like he's never seen a used game before) Me: "Look, do you have a copy that's shrinkwrapped? I don't want to pay full price for a game that's already opened. How do I know its not used?" Clerk: "Its a new copy. We just use this for a display." Me: "Is this the last copy?" Clerk: "No, I don't think so." Me: "So if I bought this copy, you'd unwrap another NEW copy to use on your display? That doesn't make sense. Here, I'll take this one back to the shelf and you can just give me a new copy." Clerk: "Uhh...(looks back at manager) Can we sell him a sealed copy?" Manager: "What game?" Clerk: "Midway's Arcade Treasures 2 for the PS2." Manager: *Grumble Grumble* (Gets a new copy of the game out from the case behind him, next to about ten other new copies) "Here." Me: "Thanks" Clerk: "That will be $21.15." Me: "You want me to put that case back on the shelf?" Clerk: "Nah I'll get it." Me: "Have a nice day!"

I've been in several malls where there were two Gamestops.
It comes from Gamestop eating their competitors.
Also, I miss when Gamestop sold DVDs, I used to buy everything there. Gamers have similar movie tastes.

My local Gamestop is ok. No problems with getting games and friendly staff.

I've never had an issue with either of the ones I have within a couple of miles of me. Anytime I've had to exchange something it's been done without issue. Never had a problem with the staff either.

Buying games in the US is a whole different world compared to over here if all these Gamestop stories are correct (even I have a fair few, constant constant CONSTANT pestering to preorder despite me obviously only being in the area on vacation, the classic new but used disc sketch etc), we don't have any shops like that in the UK.
How hard is it to sell video games?

They wouldn't let me buy a "T" rated game once.

The mall I usually go to used to have not 1, not 2, but 3 Gamestops. Well they were Electronic Boutiques but they're the same company. Now it's down to just 2 as the original one closed at some point (mostly because the damn store was horribly designed and Tiny) Also it has 3 floors... well more like two and a half but still No I don't have any horror stories at any of the Gamestops I frequent.

Mostly just the stereotypical Gamestop rudeness everyone has heard about time and time again. But, Iv'e had instances where they won't tell me I'm not going to get an instruction booklet (this was before they just simply kept them in the case on the wall), plus one time, I managed to track down a black label Kingdom Hearts, and they gave me a Greatest Hits disk. Jerks. But, I do get a bit annoyed when they get annoyed me for already having a discount card and not pre-ordering anything. I know it's because they have quotas (which is a dick move in and of itself), but don't take it out on me. I buy older used games for a reason, you know I live in an area where there are like 50 gamestops in a 20 mile radius and I can say that its really depending on who works there. I go to one that actually has cool people working there (Two not bad looking girls and dudes that actually care about their appearance and don't smell) and its well maintained. Most other gamestops are composed of really ugly girls and rude assholes that clearly don't care. Now that being said if the people care to give good service and keep the store looking good its actually a good place to get games but most times they don't pay their employees enough to care (Usually they only pay the store manager and assistant manager a decent wage). No matter what gamestop you go to though they will pressure you for reservations and to get their cards. I have the card seeing as I shop their enough so its good to get them out of my hair for that but they always ask me for reservations. Most of the time they just ask you make a few suggestions based off of what you usually buy its not too bad but once again its who you run into. I am just glad that I have one close by that is run by people who care. Although knowing their corporate structure (Very low pay scale, quota's that upper management is obsessed with, and a very corporate structure in general) its easy to not like the company. For me though I like the one I go to, cool people work there (One guy actually plays sports games seriously no one who works there plays sports games?), and its bigger sized as well as well maintained location. My main point is if you can find a good one its a good place to get some games but they will pressure you for reservations.

No real horror stories, just stories about the people that work there being creepy and hitting on my mom or my sister. My sister who was in 6th grade at the time. O.O

No, horror stories from me as well. Since couple of my friends work in my town's gamestop. And they are always cool with me.

No real problems when I go to any, except maybe the fact that some people steal the cases from the bargain bin. It annoyed me how one time I was in there and saw the case for "Outlaw Volleyball Remixed" and the case was gone later on, but the disc was still there. Personally, I don't mind using generic cases or blank DVD cases with no artwork, but I very much prefer having the actual case with the artwork and everything.

I used to work at one myself. Since I was only a seasonal worker, all I did was face shelves and talk to people. Not exactly the worst thing in the world, though after a few hours it got boring. I liked the people I worked with for the most part, but because of my lack of training, I unintentionally got under some peoples' skin.
As for one horror story: I traded in my old Xbox 360 for a new slim one last year when GS had that awesome trade-in sale. I swear, I waited on line for a half hour, and then it took them it felt like a half hour to test the freaking thing. But since I got the last one they had (for the time being), I was happy in the end.
As for one AWESOME story, here it is. I buy Mafia 2 on sale used for about $25 with tax. I get home, play the game. Got up to chapter 8, and the game froze, repeatedly, and after many restarts. So I got the game and went on back. The cashier I had was a guy I knew pretty well from when I worked there. Suffice to say, he did me a solid: not only did my game get swapped out for a "new" one (it was used), but I got a FULL refund and put down all of it on NASCAR 2011. I don't think it can get any sweeter (or wronger) than that.

Not really a horror story, but a weird one:
I go to EB games and I've pre-ordered a few things there, no big deal.
One day out of the blue I get a call from them. I wasn't home but it was on my call display. I ask them if they called, give my number, and no one can figure out why I was called.
A few months later I get another call, I call back and the same thing happens. No one can figure out why I was called. Before these calls it had been well over a year since my last pre-order.
I don't know anyone there and I hadn't pre-ordered anything for a very long time (almost a year).

Can somebody explain to me what the problem is with reserving games? It's not like it costs anything to do, plus most times there's some sort of pre-order bonus you get instead of having to buy for anywhere from 3-5 bucks down the line when it is released to the public. One time I went to a Gamestop and they had Big Bang Theory playing on a TV. That was pretty terrifying. This, my friend, is THE worst thing about GameStop. The least they could do is play How I Met Your Mother from time to time! Or something...you know...funny.

no customer has any real reason to hate gamestop. I work for them, I have full reason to hate them which I really really do. Just so you know, then main initiative for this year is Customer service, so you guys can get away with a lot more now, besides of course getting something for free.
