Since Gamestop is the most prevalent game store around, it feels like second nature to go there to find older games. However, I have found many better places to find much older games at much lower prices.
In Greenfield and Greendale (not where I live, but where a friend of mine that I sometimes visit does), there are 4 Gamestops within a few blocks from each other on the same street. Meanwhile, there is a place on the same street called Mega Media Xchange that has much older games and other stuff as well.
In Whitewater, there is (or was, I'm not sure if it's still open) a local used game store that had a similar selection to Media Xchange (namely, extremely old games). Every time I visited those places, I bought something there. I rarely buy anything when I visit a Gamestop because they rarely have anything I want.
I've found that the best places to find older games are the places I mentioned above, plus flea markets and the internet. Gamestop can barely deliver when it comes to older PS2 titles (although I've gotten quite a few there), and trading in games there is equivalent to trading in used college textbooks: you get almost nothing, then they turn around and sell it for an obnoxious markup.

For some reason I'm absolutely fascinated by this thread. I think because I hear nonstop about Gamestop horror stories, but I've never once experienced one. I guess I feel cheated.

Just went today to do a trade and return. The associate agreed with me on why i was returning a game (the fact that it was horrible), and said that he hoped I would enjoy the game that I picked out this time. Though the one here is filled with people who love their job.

Yeah, Gamestop isn't really the best spot for rarer games or games on older systems, although you can usually find pretty good deals on older titles that were popular.

I was waiting in line with MarioKart Wii in my hand on release day, and this mother in front of me was trying to pick it up for the PS3. Instead of telling her the obvious truth that it's a Nintendo Only Game, he proceeds to tell her "We JUST sold out of the PS3 version, you might want to go try WalMart."
She thanked him and left, and he gives this big smartass smirk to me as if he just told the best joke in the history of history.
I've never wanted to punch a douchebag in the face so much in my life.
That's just damn mean for the sake of being a dick. I'd have talked to the manager about it, but this was his kid.
I've never been back.

Never really had any issues at GameFlop
I have had the constant pushing of trying to get me to put a reserve down on a game I have no interest in but other than that; every GameStop I have been to, everyone has been friendly

My only Gamestop horror story is when I tried to buy Day of Reckoning 2 for Gamecube last year. I found it in a store, bought it, took it home, and the disc didn't play. I looked online for locations to exchange it at. I called one, asked them to test the disc, they said they couldn't. There was a Wii RIGHT THERE! Took home the second disc, it didn't play. I called the other location, asked them to test the disc, they said they couldn't either, there was also a Wii RIGHT THERE! Luckily the third disc actually worked, but still, they should test used GC games on the Wiis they have RIGHT THERE!

Buying games in the US is a whole different world compared to over here if all these Gamestop stories are correct (even I have a fair few, constant constant CONSTANT pestering to preorder despite me obviously only being in the area on vacation, the classic new but used disc sketch etc), we don't have any shops like that in the UK. How hard is it to sell video games? as someone who does it for a living you should give it a try for a month. We've got all 3 in Croydon, and I find GAME to be the worst out of all 3, for the sheer fact their staff don't know S*** about games, all they have is eye candy who follow the rules of 'OH HEY, PRE ORDER THE NEW CALL OF DUTY?' every single time. I remember when I wanted to find out when Burnout Paradise comes out and they forcefully pushed me into getting a PS3 (which I weren't interested in the slightest), I literally did tell em to back off. Just recently I went to get Pokemon White for my brother and got served by a cute girl, she wanted me to get the guide with it as well and I replied 'Well I've got the internet for that thanks', then she said in a sarcastic tone 'Oh, you're getting this for yourself then?', to which I replied 'No, it's for my brother....and I've already got Black before you even begin to persuade me'. I love CeX thou, I know everyone who works there and we all get along well. That shut her up.... you know how often people say things like that to staff in GAME? and do you realise just how much of an arse you sound doing it?, most staff will back off after a "no thanks". personally i'd have banned you from the store for it, after all the staff are human as well you know.

Yeah, GameStop is like a music store that only sold Top 40s music. They pretty much only carry the new and relevant titles. You are lucky to find anything from the last generation(sans PS2), and they absolutely do not sell anything older than last generation.

I don't really have many horror stories about GAME or Gamestation. The best I can think of is some dude walking into Gamestation dressed as a Victorian Gentleman & proclaiming that it was the "Establishment of the Devil!" Apparently he did it every week.
Also, Me & my friend, both of which are about 6ft & had a bit of stubble got asked if we were old enough to buy a 12 rated game. We just looked at eachother in bewilderment & said yes. I haven't been in CeX yet, but it looked like an Ok place.

My issues are mainly regarding "gutted" new games, which obviously aren't new anymore if they've been opened and had a sticker plastered on them. Radiant Historia, Infinite Space, and Knights in the Nightmare are three off the top of my head that were like this. It's mainly due to my nearby stores (2 of 'em) only getting one copy each and having to use it for a display copy, but still. At least it's relatively easy to remove the price stickers without damaging the case, I've found.
One thing that happened to me recently, though, was this: I looked up Samurai Warriors 2 XL on their site, it said a store nearby had it new. Went to the store, asked if they still had it, they said yes. The "new" game came without a box or manual, and had an obviously buffed disc. $29.99 for that.
I raged, and obviously didn't get the game. Found it about a week later at the local used game store, with case and manual, disc in even better condition than GameStop's. $7.99.
Cornette face, GameStop.

(That that I spilled cocoa all over manual is different story)

I didn't get rude to them in the slightest to begin with, but if someone's questioning me that I 'still play Pokemon' in such a sarcastic tone usually means that she's going to insult me behind my back

I'm liking it so far, though I'm running out of stuff to trade that's worth much of anything. Yeah, like a few posts before me, I really don't like trading at Gamestop. I'll buy from there but their pay-outs are usually so low that I don't bother trading. I learned this when I tried trading in a copy of Guitar Hero: World Tour and they only wanted to give me about $5 (maybe less) when they were selling it for about $30. The only game I got a decent return on was Super Mario Bros. Wii. I traded that in for about $25 which allowed me to get Fallout 3 GOTY Edition for $15 thanks to a sale they had going on. All I know is that I got 1000 points (equivalent of a full price new game) for the Epic Mickey turd. Gamestop wanted to give me 24 dollars (WITH the bonus trade in deal that was going on) The main thing I like about Goozex is that their points are based on demand for a specific title. I probably wouldn't get crap for any PS2 games if I traded them in at Gamestop. But I'm still sitting on a decent amount of points just from trading in Yakuza 1 and 2. And I'm gonna get another 400 points for trading in Def Jam: Fight For NY. I figure if I want to play those games again, I'll just hope I can find them for cheap at GameStop again.

I understand wanting to defend people who work in your line of work, but there are still assholes in every job.

Honestly the way you tell the story you come off as more of a jerk than she did.
But saying that you should be banned from the store for a little snark is a bit much.

Honestly the way you tell the story you come off as more of a jerk than she did. But saying that you should be banned from the store for a little snark is a bit much. depends on how often the person does it, we had one person repeatedly do it every time they came in over 3 years, he also pointed out that certain games were cheaper in what he thought was a competitors store to any one who was looking at certain games/consoles. were we in the wrong for banning him? no because at the end of the day having one customer anounce to the whole shop and anyone who is listening that somewhere else is better can and will affect business and we have to protect our job and keep employed.
