I've never had any major problems with those trade in stores. The only hing I can think of was the time I went to get a 2nd hand Nintendo DS and I saw the box on the shelf so I grabbed it and took it to the counter and the guy was like "We don't sell those". If you don't sell it then why advertise it?

I never really have any problems at EB, although it helps that one of my best friends runs the store I go to

The amount of trade in value that you get really chaps my ass too;I know they're a business, but I feel like I'm getting shafted by them.

GameStop is one of those places that if it was to go out of business, I would miss it about like one misses a toothache.
Around here we used to have several different video game stores and everyone of them were very nice. Now they have all either closed or became Gamestops. A couple of years ago there was a new one opened but the selection of Xbox 360 games is very limited so I have not bought anything from them yet. Usually now if I want a video game cheaper I will get it on Amazon where usually it is cheaper new there than it is used at GameStop.
One time I went in a GameStop and was asked would I like to pre-order a certain game I had no interest in. I say no. Rather than shutting up the guy starts going on that it is going to be an awesome game. I am not the person to get smart with an employee so I just say no again however I should have said something along the lines of "Do you want me to buy you a dictionary so you can look up the word no?
Another story it might have even been when the above scenario went down.On the day they released GTA:VCS for PS2 I was looking for the game but it had not got in to most places yet. So I go in GameStop asking about it and am told that there are no GTA games coming out until GTA:IV. Later that afternoon I found a game elsewhere that apparently did not exist according to Gamestop.

The only really bad thing I have to say about them is when I pre-ordered games and the DLC that was supposed to come with it didn't work. Other than that, the ones I've gone to have been pretty good.

I don't think we have Gamestop in the UK (least there ain't one where I live) but there is Gamestation which seems pretty similar.
Rude staff, giving you the wrong game, condenscending remarks etc. I stopped shopping there after I overheard some of the members of staff in the back mocking a kid who had just bought a game who had learning difficulties.
They are also the only game store I've been too which ended up giving me an empty case with no disk after I paid. Luckily, when I went back the guy had realised his mistake and I got the copy of the game with no problem but still, putting the wrong disk in is somewhat understandable and a common mistake, especially with similar titles. Forgetting to put the disk in is a different story all together.
Luckily, there's a GAME shop a few minutes away which also does the trade in games thing. Even though it's selection isn't as good and you don't get as much for your trading in, the staff are sound.
Even better, a CEX shop opened a few weeks ago too which is even better because they've also got a huge selection of DVD's and old PS2 games to trade in instead of just the modern video games. The staff there are pretty cool too, even though they are really disorganised (or were when I last visited) but I guess that's because it's a new store.

I don't really have any bad "Gamestop" stories.
The nearest one is about 75 miles away, so I really don't go there that often. However, my small town doesn't have a dedicated video game store. Instead, what we have is a "Pamida" (Think a really, really, really small Wal-Mart that has 1/3rd the selection). They have a "Video Game" section, however the last new game they put on the shelf (not counting Killzone 3) was Fable III for the 360. Yeah, according to the little old lady in charge of electronics, those are the only two "new" games to be released in the last 5 or so months.
A few years ago, when SmackDown Vs. Raw 2009 came out I wanted to buy it, and asked when "the new Wrestling game would be available?" she took me to SVR 2008 and tried telling me that was "The new model".
She's done the same for Maddens in the past.
The real irritating thing is that they NEVER reduce games. Also they get new games all the time actually, they just don't shelf them till older games sell out.
I was there yesterday, They have Bioshock I on "sale" for 55.99 and Bioshock II on "sale" for 57.99 marked down from their non sale prices of 59.99

We've got all 3 in Croydon, and I find GAME to be the worst out of all 3, for the sheer fact their staff don't know S**T about games, all they have is eye candy who follow the rules of 'OH HEY, PRE ORDER THE NEW CALL OF DUTY?' every single time. I remember when I wanted to find out when Burnout Paradise comes out and they forcefully pushed me into getting a PS3 (which I weren't interested in the slightest), I literally did tell em to back off. Just recently I went to get Pokemon White for my brother and got served by a cute girl, she wanted me to get the guide with it as well and I replied 'Well I've got the internet for that thanks', then she said in a sarcastic tone 'Oh, you're getting this for yourself then?', to which I replied 'No, it's for my brother....and I've already got Black before you even begin to persuade me'. I love CeX thou, I know everyone who works there and we all get along well. That shut her up....

Mostly just the stereotypical Gamestop rudeness everyone has heard about time and time again. But, Iv'e had instances where they won't tell me I'm not going to get an instruction booklet (this was before they just simply kept them in the case on the wall), plus one time, I managed to track down a black label Kingdom Hearts, and they gave me a Greatest Hits disk. Jerks. But, I do get a bit annoyed when they get annoyed me for already having a discount card and not pre-ordering anything. I know it's because they have quotas (which is a dick move in and of itself), but don't take it out on me. I buy older used games for a reason, you know I live in an area where there are like 50 gamestops in a 20 mile radius and I can say that its really depending on who works there. I go to one that actually has cool people working there (Two not bad looking girls and dudes that actually care about their appearance and don't smell) and its well maintained. Most other gamestops are composed of really ugly girls and rude assholes that clearly don't care. Now that being said if the people care to give good service and keep the store looking good its actually a good place to get games but most times they don't pay their employees enough to care (Usually they only pay the store manager and assistant manager a decent wage). No matter what gamestop you go to though they will pressure you for reservations and to get their cards. I have the card seeing as I shop their enough so its good to get them out of my hair for that but they always ask me for reservations. Most of the time they just ask you make a few suggestions based off of what you usually buy its not too bad but once again its who you run into. I am just glad that I have one close by that is run by people who care. Although knowing their corporate structure (Very low pay scale, quota's that upper management is obsessed with, and a very corporate structure in general) its easy to not like the company. For me though I like the one I go to, cool people work there (One guy actually plays sports games seriously no one who works there plays sports games?), and its bigger sized as well as well maintained location. My main point is if you can find a good one its a good place to get some games but they will pressure you for reservations. It's really creepy to me that you need to mention "attractive" girls. What does being "hot" have to do with buying video games?

I used to work at one and they mainly revolve around the management playing favorites and politics. welcome to the world of retail and as a guy who works in retail (the soon-to-be-renamed Blockbuster Canada) I too can't stand when a co-worker gets over-zealous and pushy trying to sell something. it's not a competition, and if you think you're going to get fired for not selling anything, then you're delusional. as long as you ask it doesn't matter if you get the sale or not. all it does is piss off the customer and make you sound like a tool. my store has a couple employees who are just asking for a customer to punch them in the face, it's getting to be a real problem.

I'm trying out Goozex as a gamestop alternative. We'll see how it goes. I'm liking it so far, though I'm running out of stuff to trade that's worth much of anything. Yeah, like a few posts before me, I really don't like trading at Gamestop. I'll buy from there but their pay-outs are usually so low that I don't bother trading. I learned this when I tried trading in a copy of Guitar Hero: World Tour and they only wanted to give me about $5 (maybe less) when they were selling it for about $30. The only game I got a decent return on was Super Mario Bros. Wii. I traded that in for about $25 which allowed me to get Fallout 3 GOTY Edition for $15 thanks to a sale they had going on.

I have some real horror stories since I used to work at one. I still got friends there, but I swear that no one above the store manager rank in that organization has any idea how to actually treat people like human beings.
Most of my horror stories are of the dumb customer or "corporate is horrible" variety. But I do have one very heartwarming story as a counter to all the negative ones here.
Earlier in the week, we pennied out some strategy guides. For anyone who is unfamiliar with the practice, pennying out something is corporate telling us "these things are hanging around your store too much. Get rid of 'em." So they get slapped with a $0.01 price tag and are unsellable (you can't actually buy it for 1 cent). Mostly this is done with old and obsolete strategy guides and promo materials, and they often end up either going home with employees or thrown in the garbage.
So anyway, I was working the morning shift that day and a mother and her little kid come in. And the little kid (who's as cute as a button btw) asks me "Excuse me, mister. Do you have the Super Paper Mario strategy guide?" Turns out we did have it, and it was one of the pennied out strategy guides. So I went to the back, found it, and put it on the counter. Mother asks "How much?" and I said "Nothing. Take it." I made that kid (and his mother's) day as the smile on his face looked like he just got the most awesome thing in the world.
And for the rest of the day I felt really good. Good enough to forget about the rest of the idiots and 500 phone calls asking about the Nintendo Wii that day.

I don't know if Gamestop is the same thing as Software ETC. I know they changed their name but I don't remember what it is now. It's mainly the one in the mall here. I used to go in there all of the time, and the manager was a prick. Reserved games would come in and he wouldn't call you until the next day. You'd ask a question and he'd give a snotty response. When the Xbox came out, I had mine pre-ordered and paid for about two weeks before the day of launch. I asked him, if I would have it the day it arrived and he said yes. So I go in there and he didn't have one. They were all gone. So I got pissed and he told me that he never told me I would have one on the day of launch, which was a lie. My girlfriend at the time called him out on it, as she was with me that day. As I started to ask for my money back, he "found" one in the back.

But I've gotten some decent deals,I got AC2 for $30 in the middle of April,I was proud!
