I agree with what some of you are saying. You guys are entitled to your opinions, but seriously, I know I am going to get lynched if I say that certain FPS games are overrated, particularly the Halo series and the CoD series. Seriously, the games are fun and all, but people act like those games are "be all end all" of video games. So you're on a planet shooting aliens, so you're playing as a solder who is in a war and both games have online. That's fine and all, but I don't think those games are the holy grail of FPS.

GTA4. Tried playing through that twice, couldn't finish it. I miss when the series was fun. I hear that. When you make a game about hijacking cars for transportation and you can't hardly drive them, that's kinda messed up. Even my friend, who's a far better gamer than I, resorted to taking cabs everywhere when he could. I had the same problem. In the previous games, I would always drive from A to B (and on weekends, point C) my myself, but because of the rather drunk physics of the cars in IV, along with other problems (seriously, you get knocked down by even the slightest tap by the car) it just ruins the game for me.

Mortal Kombat 2. I'm probably gonna get nuclear heatz for this, but UMK3 is INFINITELY better than MK2. Seriously. For me, UMK3 was a HUUUGE step up. Sure, it forgot Johnny Cage and Raiden, but honestly, they we're gonna be in every MK game from then on anyway. All of the people who say the MK2 was the greatest thing since sliced bread complain about how 'unbalanced' and 'no fun' UMK3 was. "Oooh mk3 is sooo cheep why does it have a run button that makes it unfair theres too many combos oooh" Hey. Maybe if you put forth some actual f***ing effort to try and learn the combos, then you might enjoy it! They're not that hard to do either. OH. AND MAYBE THERE'S A RUN BUTTON BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE MIGHT NOT LIKE WALKING A f***ING MILE JUST TO GET TO YOUR OPPONENT. MK2 WAS AN UNPACED BORING PIECE OF KRAP.UMK3 had a great fast pace, added more characters, and added a freaking COMBO system just like every other normal fighting game! WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU COMPLAIN ABOUT A COMBO SYSTEM IN A FIGHTING GAAAAAAME?!MK2 was the WORST of the series (I don't include the Sub Zero spinoff just like how there was a Nina Williams spinoff for Tekken) Rayman 2 was overrated too.

M.A.G., unless you want to bitch and be bitched at the entire time you play, there's no point to this game. You need to think your dick is at least 25 times bigger than it actually is to have a good time in the game.

Online is TERRIBLE. Shot 3 inches away from your knee? YOU'RE F***ING DEAD. What, from blood loss? The game feels so rushed.

I don't know if I'd say Modern Warfare 2 was overrated as it seems like a large number of COD fans actively turned away from it. But that game was sure as hell overhyped. I think it's the worst game in the series after COD3.

Brilliant, it's another one of these threads where we can bash other people's favorite games and imply they are wrong and stupid for liking them! (that's what "overrated" means, right?) And since this is the Freaking' Awesome Network forum, backing up your opinions is 100% optional!
With that said, I agree with the guy who said EVERY POPULAR GAME EVER. HOW DARE YOU ENJOY THESE GAMES WHEN I DON'T.

I believe it would be better if the thread was called "What games are overrated, in your opinion", otherwise one might be inclined to believe that anything said here is a fact (as in, every game here mentioned is overrated), especially when it's such a personal thing.
But I'll say this: 99% of the FPS's might be overrated. Most of them don't show off anything new for its time, most of them just reuse the same mechanics and engine of others and, while most of them are fun to play, they're clearly not the "be all, end all" gaming expirience most of their followers say they are. And believe me, they will say (or type, if it's on the net) until their lungs/fingers bleed. Same with most RPG's. And I'm a BIG RPG fan. Both western and Japanese.

Um, we know they're our opinions by virtue of the fact that we said them. Some of you guys take this shit way too seriously.

Skate. It basically killed the Tony Hawk series (well, along with the braintrust at Activision). But from my experience it's way too complicated and frustrating. I've never seen any negative reviews online, which boggles my mind since everyone I know who's played it questioned my sanity for even buying it. I'm actually playing it right now, and I think it's fun as hell. I like how it's a fair bit more realistic than the Tony Hawk series. Not that there was anything wrong with those games, I f***ing loved that series. I just think Skate is better.

I'm an admin at another forum and when we have a "overrated/underrated" kind of discussion going on, we put a disclaimer in the beggining, cause some guys just don't know to accept other people's opinions when they differ.

My problem is with those who just list the names of a few games (or movies or music or anything really, it's the same in every thread like this) they find "overrated" or whatever. Is it really that hard to mention reasons why you don't like something? Are we supposed to guess? Or do you expect no one to read your post? (Which, on this board, is rather common) What on earth does posting a list that says "Halo, GTA, God of War" or saying that "Mortal Kombat 2 is the WORST Mortal Kombat " contribute to the thread? (Probably about as much as this does) Maybe I'm taking this shit too seriously, but I'd really like to see the quality of posts around here improve a bit - right now we really look like a certain message board that shall not be named, and that is not a good thing. Of course, as long as I keep posting like this, the quality probably isn't going to get any better...

Just something to drive the forum along with the hopes that someone will ask a question or contribute as to why said game is overrated.

At this point, I don't see how anybody can say Final Fantasy 7 is overrated. Look at how many people posted in this thread to say FF7. I think it's pretty clear that the vast majority of gamers think FF7 is anywhere from a good game to complete crap.
However, I am not one of those people. FF7 is a masterpiece for it's time. No other PSX RPG game sucked me in like that did. But all the FF7 spin off stuff is overkill, and not very interesting to me.

FFVII haters have become a LOT more outspoken over the past few years, and nobody really acts like it's objectively the GREATEST GAME EVAR anymore. I also agree that it's a damn masterpiece. It's not even my favorite FF, nor the game that got me into the series, but it's still a damned incredible game. I actually like the spinoff/Compilation stuff too.

Ok....
- On FF7: I like it, but it's not my first choice for a Final Fantasy, nor is Final Fantasy my first choice for an RPG. I think the fact that it's seen as the apex of RPG games by some people brings on a lot of the "hate". I also think that the side stuff, addons, etc are a bit much.
- On Halo/CoD/FPS in general.....it's a good genre, but not for me. I'm not going to go into the "Every other game is an FPS" debacle but when the biggest releases are FPS titles, and have the metric f***ton of marketing behind them and have VERY little differentiating them from not only one another but other titles within the SAME franchise aside from weapon loadout and minimum graphical requirements....then we have issue.
As to MY personal picks- WoW......I PLAY WoW and even I don't get it. Yes it's a huge worldwide phenomenon, but I think I've reached the point and wonder....Why? The story is actually quite good, if not contradictory in places.

God of War series. Nothing but a mindless button masher . TBQH that's why I love it. Anyway COD series is overrated as hell Most of war FPS are. Why are you making those? Especially when you focus only on one part of WWII..... There was so many interesting battles but no - we will do only D day.... As Dan Vávra said- Italy was interesting, I don't know why other designers don't use it.

What about those of use who thought FF7 was overrated.... in 1997? It's not a damn masterpiece, it's a damn mess. I found absolutely NONE of the characters even the SLIGHTEST bit likable (except Zack, and he was killed off before the game even began), a disastrous translation ("Pale Holes", "This guy are sick", etc.), and a final boss setup where if you don't grind (at least to the point where you don't activate the boss's extra health), and you don't go for any of the special optional stuff (Knights of the Round, Omnislash, 3 Ribbons), you're pretty much not going to win. Mainly, though, it's the concept of having a cast of completely unlikable characters that ruins it for me.
