Well, except that really big one that just wrapped up. Yeah, I should've clarified "teenage dystopias that were blatantly optioned and rushed into production when Hunger Games became a big hit". And I feel like they all tried to rip off the aesthetic too, to the point that the trailers made a lot of them look virtually indistinguishable.

And Ender's Game, Ramona, Eragon, Alex Rider, Spiderwick Chronicles, Beastly, the Seeker, Inkheart, Vampire Academy and very likely the Giver. We can agree to disagree on John Carter (tbh it fits more nicely with the Disney Questionable Live Action Movie They Put Way Too Much Money Into lot along with Lone Ranger and Tomorrowland, but you KNOW they wanted a franchise there), but oh man The Giver, a movie I particularly admire, definitely fits into the YA franchise dud lot. There's nothing to disagree on - my point was that it wasn't born from the same cloth as the rest of the examples in the discussion, which were all YA book series turned into potential big deals that didn't perform. Did they have huge plans for it in terms of sequels and such? Absolutely, no one's arguing that. It just wasn't a YA book originally, is all I'm saying.

The Amazing Spider-Man movies were the biggest recent example of this. Sony was gonna make a Sinister Six movie, a Spider-Man 2099 movie, a Black Cat movie, a Spider-Gwen movie, an Aunt May movie, and then....none of that. As soon as I heard they were planning an Aunt May movie, I thought someone had lost their f***ing minds. Are you serious? How can you make an Aunt May movie? What possible comic story could you come up with? Aw, Hell No!!

NBC is just as responsible for this as Vince is. There's a book I highly recommend called "Long Bomb" about how the XFL became a fiasco, and it delves into great detail about how the league collapsed within a year. And while Vince McMahon and his cohorts do take a reasonable share of blame for it, it also explains how NBC basically submarined the product about three weeks in after it became clear that the league wasn't ever going to replicate its opening night ratings.

Star Wars? Yeah, The Force Awakens is going to make a lot of money, but if people end up hating it, or, realistically, people think it's just okay, Episode 8 and all the spin-off films are going to be a hard sell. Spin-offs maybe, but between merchandising and tie ins, Star Wars films pay for themselves before the movies even come out. They might adjust the scale of certain films (like Lucas was planning on doing to the first sequel if the 1977 release was only a modest hit), but at this point, TFA just needs to be seen as better than the prequels for enough people to think "Hey Star Wars is back!" Even if they're terrible, they'll make boatloads of money. You slap Star Wars on anything, and people will see it.

Mortal Kombat 4
Didn't they do a big on road tour with this game?
And as far as I'm aware, flopped compared to the original games.

Mortal Kombat 4 Didn't they do a big on road tour with this game? And as far as I'm aware, flopped compared to the original games. I wouldn't say it was a major flop, but it was a big disappointment. It came out at a time where people were starting to get sick of Mortal Kombat, and the change to a 3D fighter wasn't helping its cause either.

Mortal Kombat 4 Didn't they do a big on road tour with this game? And as far as I'm aware, flopped compared to the original games. Mortal Kombat 4 was pretty successful even compared to the previous games, but the MK franchise took a pretty hard nosedive right after it. Between early-1996 and late-1997 they put out the rush job MK Trilogy, MK4, MK Mythologies: Sub Zero (which would also qualify for this thread by itself), the abysmal MK: Annihilation movie, a terrible cartoon, a middling TV show, and a wholly embarrassing stage show. Complete overexposure, and all of it utter shit.

Microsoft tried having their own mascots in Blinx The Cat and Voodoo Vince early in the Xbox's life. However, Blinx actually had a sequel, whereas Voodoo Vince didn't. I could just imagine if they tried bringing them back for a new Xbox One game.

I remember the game Eternal Champions did a whole ad campaign bashing Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. The most laughable line was them talking about their female fighters and then saying "Hey Johnny Cage, scared you'll get beat up by a girl?", ignoring the fact that MK had several female fighters.

I don't know if this counts, but apparently the little alien from Eiffel 65's "Blue (Da Ba Dee)" went solo. I only found this out watching Todd in the Shadows' One Hit Wonderland video about said single. Was anyone who liked the Eiffel 65 track REALLY wanting more of that thing? I love that his website is still up though, much like the old Space Jam one: www.zorotl.com/

4 pages and I'm the first one to bring this up? You know it's bad when even Vince himself acknowledges that it was an abject failure and occasionally mocks what a dumb idea it was to begin with. Mortal Kombat 4 Didn't they do a big on road tour with this game? And as far as I'm aware, flopped compared to the original games. Mortal Kombat 4 was pretty successful even compared to the previous games, but the MK franchise took a pretty hard nosedive right after it. Complete overexposure, and all of it utter shit. It's worth noting that most of these things were produced by Threshold Entertainment, a company owned by Lawrence Kasanoff and who are also the people behind... Foodfight!. Putting way too much faith in a product they have no way of being sure will work seems to be their thing.

I saw this in a magazine long ago..long, long ago. This one is especially silly considering Croc was NOT supposed to be an edgy mascot "with an attitude". The whole point was that he was a straightforward good guy helping adorable creatures against equally adorable yet evil creatures. Also, I still say Croc 2 was awesome.

Croc WAS a Yoshi game originally... Look at Croc and look at Yoshi... they didn't change the design that much.

Hunger Games may be going down this route if they continue the franchise by making prequel films. I don't think this is a series that can be stretched that far.

Jinx from the James Bond film Die Another Day. The character was heavily promoted prior to the film's release, to the extent that Halle Berry almost received equal billing in commercials alongside Pierce Brosnan, and was sold as being the character to finally break the Bond Girl typecast, there were even rumours before the release of the character receiving its own spinoff franchise from it.
In reality however Die Another Day was a critical failure, widely considered the worst film in the franchise, whilst the supposedly amazing Jinx was a lazy action girl archetype that nobody could give two stuffs about.

Halle Berry wasn't helped by the fact Rosamund Pike's character was infinitely way cooler than hers in that movie.
