Jinx from the James Bond film Die Another Day. The character was heavily promoted prior to the film's release, to the extent that Halle Berry almost received equal billing in commercials alongside Pierce Brosnan, and was sold as being the character to finally break the Bond Girl typecast, there were even rumours before the release of the character receiving its own spinoff franchise from it. In reality however Die Another Day was a critical failure, widely considered the worst film in the franchise, whilst the supposedly amazing Jinx was a lazy action girl archetype that nobody could give two stuffs about. And given how pushy she got on the set of the original X-Men trilogy, one wonders if Berry herself was the cause of said promotion. Oh! Got another big example...NBC Coupling. Heavily promoted as the replacement to the about-to-end Friends, and it was mentioned on a sticker of releases of the BBC original, AND by the voiceover of commercials for the BBC version on one of our PBS stations. Well we know how THAT ended... Green Lantern (live action movie)? And I know it had legs for awhile, but the Robert Zemeckis Uncanny Valleyverse? When Mars Needs Moms bombed, that went crashing. Thankfully we avoided a RZUV Yellow Submarine as a result.

One slight correction: John Carter shouldn't be part of that particular list. Though it bombed in quite spectacular fashion, it was not part of the YA flood; rather, it's based on 1930's Sci-Fi pulp novels. Disney has there own bad track record of trying to catch the Pirates of the Caribbean lighting in bottle. The Chronicles of Narnia, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Tron: Legacy, Prince of Persia, John Carter, The Lone Ranger. Naria is a strange one too because the first one was a Commercial Success, but then Disney tried to epicfy the sequel and make it out to be some massive Summer Blockbuster and it blew up in their face.

Several sitcoms. The name completely escapes me, but I remember Fox had a show in the mid 90s about two guys that they were literally advertising as the next Beavis & Butthead and Wayne & Garth. Was it "Too Something"? This is my best bet. I remember very little of the show itself, but I remember the promotion going really out there.

Anyone remember Coconut Fred's Fruit Salad Island? Anyone remember KidsWB promoting the hell out of this show? Anyone remember how long the show lasted?

Lipstick Jungle. The commercials were not only all over nbc, but there were commercials for it when I went to the friggin movies. Nbc was really on this to generate gold entirely because it was written by the same chick who did Sex and The City(which the ads would remind you of).

Remember how Avatar broke all those records when it first came out and they were immediately talking about making a trilogy out of it? Did anything ever come of that?

Hunger Games may be going down this route if they continue the franchise by making prequel films. I don't think this is a series that can be stretched that far. Depends how they do it. Coming out of both the Mockingjay films, my first thoughts were wanting to see more of President Snow and his rise to power/

XXX Who needs Bond??? we've now got XXX!!!! And then came the sequel with Ice Cube, which a lot of people did not like. I enjoyed it, actually.
Also, a little known film called "Prayer of the Rollerboys" has an ending which sets up a sequel that never happened.

The Rollerball reboot was not only intended to be a multi-part franchise, but also a launching pad for Chris Klein's career on the A-list. Swing and a miss on two counts there. Remember how Avatar broke all those records when it first came out and they were immediately talking about making a trilogy out of it? Did anything ever come of that? Avatar 2 is scheduled for December 2017, with three more sequels on top of that already scripted and in various stages of pre-production.

These days an 8 year gap between sequels is unheard of.

First movie I ever saw get Zero stars in a review. Also, looking back on it, the original 70s film was much better because it was a dystopian commentary about conglomerations controlling everything and providing homogenized entertainment, whereas this was more of a generic "successful guy doesn't want to take a dive, so others pay as a result" type of shtick flick.

I saw this in a magazine long ago..long, long ago. This one is especially silly considering Croc was NOT supposed to be an edgy mascot "with an attitude". The whole point was that he was a straightforward good guy helping adorable creatures against equally adorable yet evil creatures. Also, I still say Croc 2 was awesome. It was the nineties is the answer to that.

Terminator Salvation. They took what looked like half a movie, and stretched it into 90 minutes. The whole thing kept insisting through out the film that there was more beyond what we saw. I hated how it felt like we were cheated out of an actual ending to the film. The movie did not have the strength to stand on it's own the way The first Matrix film and Fellowship of The Ring did.

XXX Who needs Bond??? we've now got XXX!!!! Was XXX supposed to be a franchise? I thought it was pretty fun, but it never struck me as something that needed a sequel. Plus, I think State of the Union did more to ruin the popularity than anything else.
