Reading this thread makes me want to give up on life entirely. You say that about everything, haha. Gee whiz. I'm not trying to make light of it but really, there's literally nothing harsh that's been said here concerning anyone reasonable. It's a thread started by a former moderator who I'm sure would make mention if stuff was getting way too off track or if anything uncalled for has been said, not to mention with how good the active moderation team in general is they would surely nip things in the bud if things were actually bad. Do you take issue with anything in particular that has been said? While I'm mostly quite happy with my life, I actually do take issue with a lot of the replies in this thread. Maybe I made a mistake by focusing on the word as opposed people's actions, but whatever term was being used to disparage people for having a hobby (regardless if they were obsessive or not), I would have a problem with it. This isn't where I wanted the conversation to go. I'm well aware that there are some who take their anime and Japan fascination to unsettling degrees, but I wasn't trying to discuss those people, I was hoping we could keep the conversation focused on smug jerks who troll others for merely liking anime casually. You know, those anonymous people you see in forums on social media who are like "lol gay" when you try to share with them something you enjoy. Can we just keep the focus on them, please?

Do you take issue with anything in particular that has been said? Because this thread is reminding me that I fit some of the definitions of either 'otaku' or 'weeaboo', even though I reject those labels. Especially the no social skills thing. Not only that, but the post about the whole sexualisation thing. I don't want to be seen as some disgusting pervert just because I like anime. A lot of people fit a lot of definitions, dude. Just because you fit into a person's notion of what an anime fan is isn't reason to give up on life. "Otaku" and "Weaboo" are just words, don't let em define you.

Those are trolls focusing on them is what they want. Anyway there are weebs out there and I like a phrase I can use to refer to themthat sounds about as silly as some of the things they obsess over. Not like we're riding around in pickups waiting for people to come out of Hot Topic so we can lynch em good.

This thing still going? Why? It's really, really simple. Some people go way too hard at Japan, and it's irritating. If you're trying to defend it, chances are you suspect that you are one of those people and are trying to justify to yourself why you are not one of those people.
It's not necessary. No one actually knows or would care about your hobbies and interests until you go out of your way to make it their business. There's no inherent flaw in simply being a fan of something.
However, don't want to risk being labeled a Weeaboo or whatever? Then don't just go on and on and on and on about Japanese things. Mix it up a little. Throw some West in there.

Oh, I already know I'm nowhere near that stereotype. I'm really just a fan of great animation in general, and while most of my tastes are Western (I love old classic shorts and much of the 90's television Renaissance, and anything Disney or Pixar I'm all over), I also enjoy a fair amount of anime as well. Hell, I almost always prefer dubs, which seems to be a cardinal sin among those who fit the weeaboo image. What I take umbrage with is anyone getting picked on for their hobbies, and unless they're actively being a jerk about it or snapping at people for not enjoying their particular interest to the extent they do (and yes, those people are extremely annoying), I don't really care how obsessive someone is about it. If someone is fanatical about something and they're pushy or an ass about it, I do get mocking those people, but if they're fanatical but also a decent and rational person otherwise, then yeah, I'm willing to stick up for them. Just let weird people be weird.

I agree, dude. I do. It's not the art, it's the artist. (or I guess in this case observer)
It wasn't my intention to finger you or anyone else. It never is. I just do commentaries.
Everyone knows one of these types though. There is no reason to pretend they're not out there. We're bickering about what the stupid word means instead of feeling the spirit of these assholes.
It's just Japanese culture in this one instance. These people also watch sports, read comics, play games, etc. and they make it all terrible for everyone around them.
Folks shouldn't feel attacked. Read your manga. It doesn't hurt anyone. Just be responsible with it.

Yeah its lame when smug arseholes who think anyone who watches anime is a loser uses it against a casual fans
However if said person is the type of twat who thinks that Japan is some sorta kawaii/Otaku paradise where they will score tons of chicks due to their knowledge of Japanese pop culture then I honestly can't say that I will feel sorry for them when they get called a weeaboo.

I know this a months old thread but there's got to be a bit of fun in escapism and trying to immerse yourself in an entirely new culture. Maybe not completely at the expense of your own, but I guess I could see how someone could go down that proverbial rabbit hole (in this case with anime, NJPW, J-Pop, JRPG, etc.) and not want to come out if things weren't going too great with their current interests.

People actually use Weeb as an insult? Me & my friends in HS & college would just say it as a joke.
"Ayy dude, did you see the new episode of Magical Madoka GX Sentai Uguuu?" "I'm waiting for the English version to come out." "Wow, you watch subs? Those thing are garbage, dude. Dubs for life." "Sounds like some shit a WEEB would say!"

Normally I'm against labels, but there is a very loud and obnoxious "Sub-Purist" subsect in the anime fandom, so the shoe kind of fits.

Eh, I figure as long as they're not doing anything illegal or that directly effects me, people should be free to watch whatever they want.
However, I'm totally behind the term for people who enjoy anime being changed to Animeniacs.
Oh, and semi-related, I remember a friend telling me that people who like the military side of WW2 Germany, but not the ideals are known as "Wehraboos." Which amused me. (The Wehrmacht was the blanket term for Germany's navy, airforce and ground forces)
EDIT: Effects me in a negative way. Say I learned something new about something via somebody watching anime, I ain't gonna sulk and refuse to accept it.

My opinion hasn't changed. I still think it's a stupid term, and frankly I have no idea why what I think comes off as a pretty nasty insult was embraced by so many anime fans.
I hope I don't sound like some sort of stick in the mud when I say that, but I'm sorry, it still pisses me off.

I was gonna say it's pretty much a nonsense term, but most curses and slurs are in the beginning I suppose. I get where you're coming from, but as others have stated, people are using it as a badge of honour now, rather than a derogatory manner, so hopefully it can get like, flipped to something doo.

Just let weird people be weird. I think you have a tendency to care too much what other people think. I have a lot of personality aspects that I know other people dislike and that I have made peace with. I mean without being ridiculous we all are on a wrestling forum, and wrestling is still considered at worst, gay porn, and at best, fake, stupid bullshit. I completely get why someone would hate wrestling, but who cares? The people who's opinions matter to me either like wrestling too, or are sane enough humans that they can express their dislike without belittling or better yet, not talk about it at all, because why would I talk to them about it? I wish you could be more comfortable in yourself and in the things you love. Because I felt like a weight was lifted once I realised that the things I love are mine and nobody can take them away from me.

Nope. I know people that embrace the term. I'd rather people just stop using any terms to disparage others for liking different things, but that's simply not going to happen.

I don't throw around the term all willy nilly towards people who like anime. No, I only use the term towards the extreme anime elitists. You know the ones: the ones who claim that the only way to enjoy an anime is through subtitles, with the original Japanese voices and music and that anyone who does otherwise is subhuman scum who deserves to die along with their entire family.
Keep in mind they must either meet all the criteria or a combination of any plus the last one.
