And I say this as someone who enjoys the odd anime, but nowhere enough to fit the stereotype (I actually don't own any series and I don't collect any merchandise, outside of the odd manga volume, and I don't want anything to do with any "moe" or loli-ish stuff).
But the term just feels incredibly mean-spirited and insulting to me. I don't understand why so many anime fans have embraced it.

No. Anime obsession is annoying. I say this as a man that has watched plenty.
It's a perfectly viable medium. The Japanese have produced plenty of enjoyable cartoon programs.
But......... there is a line, I think. Like, if you're sitting around in a kimono with your hair in a topknot eating soba noodles and watching some thing about super cute twelve year old girls, you might need to re-evaluate.

Wow. I've never heard this term until today.
I read manga and watch a fair bit of anime, but I don't really run in "anime circles" so that's probably why I don't know it.
But yeah, anytime you get these pop cultural enclaves of fans with increasingly singular tastes - you're bound to get this kind of language.

I very much disagree with that. Who am I or anyone else to dictate where a "line" is? If that person isn't hurting anyone or doing/purchasing anything illegal, they shouldn't be mocked or made to feel bad for it. There's plenty of stuff I've seen in anime circles I've found creepy as hell, but that's no excuse to tear other people down.

It's like you read my mind, because this is exactly what I almost went on a Twitter rant about earlier today. Kind of creepy. Anyway, my biggest problem with the term is that everyone seems to have a different definition of what it means. I follow some YouTubers who call themselves 'weeb trash' and 'weeaboo', but they use the term in an ironic way. I've seen countless people online who seem to confuse 'weeaboo' with otaku, and won't accept that they aren't the same thing. I've seen various definitions of what counts as being considered a 'weeaboo', and they vary drastically from person to person. What I hate the most above all though, is people who use the term to immediately insult people who watch anime or read manga or play Japanese anime style video games. These people think that all people who like anime are automatically 'weeaboos' and I hate it. I could go on a huge rant about all of this, but I really don't feel like it right now.

The same goes with any fandom, be they furries or Trekkies or whatever. So long as you're staying within the realm of the law, you should be left alone, period.

Also, I do have something else to say, and that is I do own a ton of anime DVD's. Mainly because I've been buying them since I was a young teenager, and whenever I see them really cheap I pick them up. I don't collect merchandise, although truth be told, I probably would, if it wasn't so expensive. I've seen some really cool anime figurines and statues, but they're extremely expensive, so I don't bother. And finally, I don't mind some 'moe' stuff, but it depends what it is. I mean, Haruhi Suzumiya is considered moe, and that series was great.

Honestly, the only time I've really seen these terms used are on chan boards, and they have derogatory words for everyone, so that's not really a shock. Maybe it's because anime has never been my thing, but it's not really something I've ever heard.

That being said, 'moe' is a term that a lot of people seem to have different definitions of. It's one of those terms that I get confused about at times, not to the level of my confusion over 'weeaboo', but still.

For being a chan slur it's surprisingly benign if you think about it.
That said I prefer japanimaniac!

So uh ... what came first the Perry Bible Fellowship or this use as an insult? Though I've only ever heard it used as a self-depreciating joke and not an actual insult from anyone... but I don't go on the chans.

I've also personally never seen anyone use it as an insult.

It perfectly describes the white people in my Japanese class who wear silk-screen anime shirts with oversized cat ear hats and raise their hands when the teacher asks if anyone in the class is Japanese then say "Well, technically I'm not, but..." while the people who are actually Japanese don't raise their hands at all to keep from being harassed by these same people. I have 0 regrets over using it. Though of course the most usage I see it get is people who have reappropriated it a la Randal Graves.

I hate labels for fandoms in general, even if they're not meant to be insulting. If you like something, like it, don't mold your personality to it or whatever.

I think weeaboo here has the same negative connotation that otaku has in Japan. While "otaku" in the west is considered a generally positive term that encompasses the entire anime fandom, in its native Japan, otaku is an insult meant for the obsessive, slovenly, and perverted fans that have no social skills whatsoever.
I personally use weeaboo for the type of non-Japanese anime fan who tries really, really hard to be Japanese based entirely off anime or Japanese video games while being completely ignorant about Japanese culture as a whole. And this can and often does go into the realm of cultural appropriation.

I think its a stupid insult because it sounds like something a first or second grader would come up with. The people it apples to however, are usually anime hipsters who insult anyone who might enjoy dubs over subs or believe certain anime series over others or those who choose not to ship characters. Those kids of people should be insulted, just not with "weeaboo".
