Honestly I hate most labels for fans. Like, even as someone who plays a lot of video games and has for years, I f***ing hate the word 'gamer' and think it's both an unnecessary term and one that always sounds completely condescending. Though really I hate most things about video game culture so maybe not the best example.

*Shrug*
Shaming language is occasionally very useful. I know we're very sensitive to bullying now, and it's hard to know where a persons line is but terms like this used among friends in the correct manner (Sort of playful, taunting, but leading to serious discussion if the opportunity comes up) are really important. People will get obsessed with stuff, make their whole life about it, and then get mad that people should be willing to accept them for whoever they are despite how not making an effort to understand social skills and branch your interests out does real, tangible harm to a person down the road.

Seriously? I start watching anime again (and playing some anime-style video games again) for the first time in ages, and this thread and it ends up bumped? The universe really does hate me... Normally I'm against labels, but there is a very loud and obnoxious "Sub-Purist" subsect in the anime fandom, so the shoe kind of fits. I'm a big anime fan and I pretty much only watch it dubbed (unless there's no dub for the show I'm watching) My opinion hasn't changed. I still think it's a stupid term, and frankly I have no idea why what I think comes off as a pretty nasty insult was embraced by so many anime fans. I hope I don't sound like some sort of stick in the mud when I say that, but I'm sorry, it still pisses me off. From what I've seen, anime fans who use the term either use it ironically, or they use it in order to try and get rid of it's derogatory meaning (like the use of the word 'otaku', which is also a derogatory term according to a lot of people). Honestly I hate most labels for fans. Like, even as someone who plays a lot of video games and has for years, I f***ing hate the word 'gamer' and think it's both an unnecessary term and one that always sounds completely condescending. Though really I hate most things about video game culture so maybe not the best example. I hate labels as well, but I view 'gamer' as a more general term for anyone who plays video games. I've called myself a gamer plenty of times. That being said, I do dislike the sub-labelling of people who play video games (such as 'casual-gamer', 'hardcore-gamer' etc). *Shrug* Shaming language is occasionally very useful. Okay, I disagree with this entire post. I honestly can't think of a situation in which shaming language could ever be 'useful'. I see shaming language as a form of bullying. I don't see how having obsessions is a bad thing unless you're trying to force them on other people. I've said many times before that I'm into a lot of different things (video games, anime, movies etc), but I don't even talk about them, never mind trying to force them on others. Your next point really has me confused. I don't see why having such interests is a barrier to accepting people for who they are. I just don't get it. I also don't get where social skills fit in, and I don't get why you (or anyone else) would think that anyone who has big obsessions/interests actually don't branch out their interests. I've literally never come across a big fan of something who doesn't have other interests, and that includes myself. And as for tangible harm, I have no clue what you're talking about.

I've never heard or seen this word before, but can the word "bae" f*** directly off? I don't have any issues with Bae. Nothing about it seems that mean, it comes off like a cute shorthand for babe or "baby". Maybe I am being too much of an ass about "weeaboo". I don't like it, but I'm not going to grab my torch and pitchfork if someone really wants to use it playfully. I apologize if I've been coming off like an idiot in this topic.

Also I noticed that I completely forgot to mention that I'm pretty sure I found out the reason why it's such a widespread derogtory term, but I won't mention it here.

Gomenasai, my name is Ken-Sama.
I’m a 27 year old American Otaku (Anime fan for you gaijins). I draw Anime and Manga on my tablet, and spend my days perfecting my art and playing superior Japanese games. (Disgaea, Final Fantasy, Persona series)
I train with my Katana every day, this superior weapon can cut clean through steel because it is folded over a thousand times, and is vastly superior to any other weapon on earth. I earned my sword license two years ago, and I have been getting better every day.
I speak Japanese fluently, both Kanji and the Osaka dialect, and I write fluently as well. I know everything about Japanese history and their bushido code, which I follow 100%
When I get my Japanese visa, I am moving to Tokyo to attend a prestigious High School to learn more about their magnificent culture. I hope I can become an animator for Studio Ghibli or a game designer!
I own several kimonos, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to Japan, so I can fit in easier. I bow to my elders and seniors and speak Japanese as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.
Wish me luck in Japan!

I'm discussing a very specific set of situations, if it doesn't apply to you it doesn't apply to you. Social skills are important. Interacting with people is important. If you're a person who prioritizes watching anime or video games over social skills, it's going to do increasing damage to how you interact with the world around you the older you get. It's going to make it more difficult for you to interact with people both personally and - more importantly - professionally. You'll lack the toolkit you need to have the best possible success in life, and that's not good. If you're the kind of person who prioritizes these things over trying to become more successful or self improve because you're happy with staying home and simply engaging in your hobbies then you're going to stagnate. Some of your friends giving you shit about not trying to get out more, or not being ambitious enough, can be the kick in the ass you need to get going.

Me and my friends see a weeb as a otaku that has gone too far down the rabbit hole. Tho I've been called one and I guess I have weeb tendencies. I did learn Japanese so I could watch anime and play Jrpgs with no subs and understand the lyrics in the Jpop I listen to. I import stuff all the time mostly music.

I've never heard or seen this word before, but can the word "bae" f*** directly off? Let's not just go off into insulting youth slang, particularly given that most of it has background in racial minorities. English is not a dead language. It is always evolving, always changing. New words are created. Ten years ago 'tweet' and wouldn't exist in day to day language unless you're an ornithologist, ditto to 'status update' outside the marine corps. New words come. Old words go.

For what it's worth, in the past I frequented some really, exceptionally nasty forums in the past where insulting people for various things was commonplace.
I'm not talking about playful jabs or the kind of thing you'd find here, I mean sub/YouTube comment level humor. Gay slurs, every racial slur under the sun, hate speech that I assume was mostly meant to come off as edgy but more than likely had some actual bigotry behind it in some cases, the works. If you liked anime you were lower than dirt, and if you were a furry or even just were okay with furries then God help you.
A conversation like the one in this thread would have been utterly impossible. Honestly, I should make it clear that no one there would have been as understanding and willing to listen the way you all have here.

You get being a Japan dork, but also get it's non-functionality in mainstream society. Ex. real situation: "Hey man, she's pretty shaken up. Could you maybe help calm her down?" "Yeah, well in the original manga for Macross...." "Ugh.. I hate you."
