The rise of social media over the years and presumably Total Divas has lead to the rise of a part of the wrestling fanbase that focuses more on wrestlers physical attractiveness and celebrity status. Lets call them the "YAAS DADDY YAAS" fans.
My question is: are these fans the key to wrestling gaining mainstream acceptance again? Do you think they are helping or hurting DIS BUSINESS in any way? Personally I think over time these fans will be key into bringing in new people into watching wrestling which is always a good thing. The memes, gifs, photoshops, etc can possibly be more powerful and effective in attracting new fans and viewers than telling someone to watch a tape or match from NXT. Too early to tell though.

First: I hate yaaaaasss. Passionately.
Second: Absolutely. Total Divas and the overall rehaul of their thinking with Divas, feminism, etc absolutely has garnered more fans and will establish bridges towards expansion. However, I genuinely feel WWE won't become mainstream until after the old man kicks it.

They're Twitter/Tumblr fans and, in my experience, they're can be more interested in showing love to 'dad' and 'mom' and having fandom wars.
Maybe most are harmless but those that aren't? Damn. It gets ugly.

Vince McMahon was around way before Total Divas.

Never browse the Renee Young tags on Twitter or Tumblr. You will find a venomous hive of slutshaming and irrational hatred towards her because she dares to have a relationship with Dean Ambrose.
On that note, there is a lot of stanning for Dean Ambrose.

I have went on dates with multiple girls who, when learning about my wrestling fanhood, immediately talk about Total Divas and how much they love it. I'm not a fan of the show but it absolutely brings in eyes that would never even give it a second chance without Total Divas.

I don't think "blackface" means what this person thinks it does.

You've all got to be kidding yourselves if you think the focus on a wrestler's looks/celebrity status is a NEW development. That's been the case since wrestling got on TV.

Tumblr and Twitter specifically take it to a whole new level, though. I mean... there are probably fans looking for a tweet that will get Renee fired as we speak.

Honestly it was the Tumblr fanbase that got me back into wrestling, some of it is dodgy (Renee haters) but for the most part they're just fans like us who might express their love for a wrestler differently. I'm a fan of drag so when I see Asuka kicking arse I will say "Yasss Asuka slay me bitch" does that make me less of a fan? No, it means Asuka is slaying me. Honestly I see people chalk certain fans as "weird shippers" or "shallow fangirls" and if it isn't hurting anyone, who cares? I used to read Stephanie/Jericho fanfic all the time when I was younger, it's harmless fun and it doesn't impact anyones lives whatsoever.

Yeah, my wife doesn't watch wrestling (not because it's wrestling, because she thinks it sucks now) but she has never missed an episode of Total Divas. She even really dug Ride Along and wants to make that a part of our regular television viewing.

Honestly the thing about Total Divas is while it brings in ratings, there doesn't seem to be much overlap at all between the people watching and those watching Raw.

The whole deal. The aspect that annoys me is a few things, though. And I've been on Tumblr so I've seen some stuff. - Diva fans who complain about everything, who complain when they're favorite isn't being pushed, who just like to mock other divas for no reason. - Those who legitimately believe the wrestlers are all secretly gay (but just the hot ones). Cody is closeted and Brandi is his beard. I find that kind of thing incredibly disrespectful. I do feel like those are the "wrong" kinds of fans.
