There was exactly zero percent chance this wouldn't be abused. Youtube has an awful history of letting things like this go way too far because of how vague their guidlines are and how slow it is to actually get a counter-claim in.
Hurts my viewing habits because almost all of the channels I watch either swear like sailors or discuss controversial subjects: Secular Talk, Sargon of Akkad, Young Turks, Alternative History Hub, Game Theorists, Film Theorists, True Geordie, etc.
All of those guys would be up shit's creek under these guidlines. Just stick with your old flagging system and stop bending over backwards for advertisers, Youtube. I realize you need them but, that doesn't mean you have to jump every time one of them sneezes.

I just watched a h3h3 video before who has an idea what causes this. Basically there is a bot that checks tags for stuff such as rape, suicide and drugs but it's basically unable to look at the context of the tag as it's basically going "a video discussing the stanford rape is about rape so therefore it's bad" or "Boogie has a series of videos about mental illness and suicide so therefore it's a video about committing suicide"

That be one way to kill youtube. Yup it sure would....but with more and more stuff disappearing behind that YouTube Red paywall I really wouldn't be shocked if Google tried it. As someone who technically has YouTube Red (it comes with Google Play Music I guess), I kind of struggle to see the point of it aside from them eventually letting creators charge subscription fees or something. I know there's "bigger" shows and stuff on Red, but I can't imagine why it's there if a total paywall isn't the end goal.

Every single thing hits his main channel anyway. Heck, I'm surprised Konami hasn't struck a copyright claim in the meantime, since they do own the YuGiOh franchise and #f***onami Isn't stuff like YGO abridged and DBZ Abridged covered by fair use on the basis of it being a parody? I swear this has come up before. From what I understand, Toei/Fuji TV's argument on those is that North American fair use laws are not applicable to Japanese properties. Apparently, Japan doesn't have "fair use" in the same sense we do.

Haha, good luck trying to enforce this while keeping any sort of a real userbase compared to what you have now.
FAN's strict ass rules work for us because we're tiny and don't use the place to make money and let's be honest, even among smarks we only appeal to a small set of people. We only WANT to appeal to a small set of people.
Our ridiculous rules on a larger scale? Doesn't work. Too restrictive. I mean I love this board but if the entire internet was as sterile as we have it here, yeah it'd be less hair pullingly frustrating, but it wouldn't be "real".
Leave the niche carving rules for the niche communities who can afford to do it without caring about who doesn't want to be a part of it. Don't do this to yourself YT. You supply the platform for the voice and face of the internet to show itself in many different forms. Commercial appeal means we'll only see and hear "approved" voices, and that's scary unless a real alternative ever comes about.

I really want to go to an event like that. I remember reading articles in the early 2000s to "enjoy the Internet as it is, in its Wild Wild West days, because it will not last". Yep.

A lot of what I was going to say has already been said (such as Boogie's suicide prevention videos being hit) but I do want to say some stuff that's bothering me about this.
In the YouTube comments on all of the videos I've watched on this subject, there are countless comments with hundreds of upvotes blaming so-called 'SJW's' and 'feminists' for this policy. The reason this bothers me so much is because if the people making these comments did any research, they'd see that so-called 'SJW' YouTubers and feminist YouTubers are ALSO having their videos unmonetized by this...so how in the hell do any of the comments blaming them make any sense? Why would they be in favour of a policy which takes away their ad revenue? It's stupid and makes no sense.
Secondly, (and briefly, as I know we're not allowed to talk politics here and I don't want to anyway) are the people blaming people of certain political affiliations for this policy. How does that make any sense? YouTube as a corporation decided to change its policy, how is that some sort of political conspiracy?
Finally, I'd recommend watching H3H3Productions video on this subject, (titled 'Why Doesn't YouTube Explain Anything?') as they explain how the system works (it's an automated flagging system similar to copyright detection, only it targets so-called 'controversial' tags or video titles) and they explain how they had this happen to them a couple of years ago, only now it's happening to everyone.

Yeah, it's hard to believe that it's only more transparency and the policy hasn't actually changed when so many videos are already being taken down. This happening to the ones about mental health is especially f***ed up. Putting this kind of videos on YouTube can be a very useful way to reach a lot of people very fast and provide them with vital information that they might not access otherwise and help them learn what they can do about their issues. And make no mistake, it's only affecting monetized videos now but there's no way in Hell they won't eventually make those rules apply to all videos. So, do record labels get an exemption or does Nicki Minaj immediately lose the 90% of her income that comes from talking about her rear end? HA! Wealthy companies having to follow the same rules as regular people! Good one! YouTube wipes its ass with fair use. Isn't stuff like YGO abridged and DBZ Abridged covered by fair use on the basis of it being a parody? I swear this has come up before. From what I understand, Toei/Fuji TV's argument on those is that North American fair use laws are not applicable to Japanese properties. Apparently, Japan doesn't have "fair use" in the same sense we do. Which is weird considering the importance of the doujinshi industry and the fact that Japanese works frequently have characters from completely unrelated (and copyrighted) franchises cameo but it seems to be okay as long as they don't give their name.

When it has nothing to do with either, but some people see the world through their own lens like that and assume everything relates back to it.
